When do you get your unemployment payment from Washington ESD?
I just got approved for UI benefits last week and I'm trying to figure out when I'll actually receive my first payment. I filed my weekly claim on Sunday but my account still shows pending. Does anyone know how long it typically takes for Washington ESD to send out payments after you file your weekly claim? I'm getting stressed about rent coming up.

Usually payments are processed within 2-3 business days after you file your weekly claim, assuming there are no issues with your claim. Since you filed Sunday, you should see it by Wednesday or Thursday.

•Thanks! That's a relief. I was worried it would take weeks like when I first applied.

•yeah but sometimes the system glitches and it can take longer, especially if you're new to the system

Make sure you set up direct deposit if you haven't already. The debit card option can add extra days to when you actually get access to your money.

•I did set up direct deposit during the application process. How do I check if it's actually working?

•You can verify your payment method in your Washington ESD account under payment preferences. If there's an issue with your bank info, they'll send you a debit card instead.

I've been dealing with Washington ESD for months and honestly the payment timing is pretty consistent once you get into the routine. File Sunday, get paid Wednesday or Thursday. The real headache is when you need to actually talk to someone about issues with your claim.

•OMG yes! I spent literally 6 hours on hold last month trying to get through to someone about my adjudication issue. Never got through.

•I actually found this service called Claimyr that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents. You can check it out at claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me so much frustration.

•Wait really? How does that work? I'm desperate at this point.

Just to add some specifics - Washington ESD processes payments on Tuesday and Friday typically. So if you file your weekly claim by Sunday night, you're in the Tuesday batch. If you file Monday or later, you're probably waiting until Friday.

•This is super helpful! I had no idea there were specific processing days.

•Wait is this actually true? I thought they processed every day...

•It's based on when I tracked my payments over several months. Could vary but this has been my experience consistently.

also make sure you're filing your weekly claim correctly because if you mess up the work search requirements or report income wrong it can delay everything

•What work search requirements? I thought those were waived?

•The work search requirement is back in effect. You need to complete at least 3 job search activities per week and keep a log.

Been on unemployment for 8 months now and I can tell you the payment schedule is pretty reliable UNLESS you have any kind of flag on your account. Then all bets are off and you're back to waiting weeks.

•What kind of flags? How would I know if I have one?

•Could be anything - reporting issues, identity verification, job search compliance. Your account will usually show if there's an outstanding issue.

•This is exactly what happened to me. Had to verify my identity and it took 3 weeks to get payments started again.

I remember my first payment took like 2 weeks because they had to verify everything was set up correctly. After that it was much faster.

•Did you have to do anything special or just wait it out?

•Just had to wait unfortunately. The first payment always seems to take longer.

Pro tip: if your payment is delayed and you can't reach anyone by phone, try using that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. I used it last month when my payment got stuck and they actually got me through to an agent who fixed it same day.

•How much does something like that cost though?

•Way less than the stress of not getting paid on time! Plus it actually worked unlike calling myself for hours.

The Washington ESD website says payments are issued within 2-3 business days but in my experience it's usually exactly 3 business days from when you certify.

•Good to know, thanks for the realistic timeline!

Just want to point out that holidays can mess up the payment schedule too. If there's a federal holiday during the week, everything gets pushed back a day.

•Yes! I learned this the hard way during Memorial Day weekend.

been getting unemployment for 6 months and honestly the payment timing is the LEAST of your worries with Washington ESD. Wait until you have to deal with their customer service or god forbid an appeal process...

•Don't scare the new person! But yeah, calling them is basically impossible.

•That's why services like Claimyr exist though - takes the pain out of actually reaching someone when you need help.

One thing to watch out for - if you have any issues with your weekly claim certification, fix them immediately. I once had a small error and it delayed my payment for over a week.

•What kind of error? I want to make sure I avoid that.

•I accidentally reported income for the wrong week. Small mistake but it flagged my claim for review.

Direct deposit usually hits my account Wednesday morning if I file Sunday night. Pretty consistent for me.

The debit card option isn't terrible if you can't do direct deposit for some reason. Usually available Thursday morning at the latest.

•But watch out for ATM fees if you go that route.

Jenna Sloan
•True, the fees can add up if you're not careful about which ATMs you use.

I track all my payments in a spreadsheet and can confirm the Tuesday/Friday processing schedule someone mentioned earlier is pretty accurate. Filed Sunday = paid Wednesday, filed Monday-Tuesday = paid Friday/Saturday.

Just remember to keep filing your weekly claims even if your payment is delayed. Missing a week can cause all sorts of problems with your claim.

•Good point, I'll make sure to stay on top of that.

If you're really worried about timing, you can usually see the payment status change in your Washington ESD account before the money actually hits your bank. Look for it to change from 'pending' to 'paid'.

•I'll keep checking my account then. Thanks for all the help everyone!

•You should be fine, sounds like you're doing everything right. The first payment is always the most nerve-wracking.
