When did the extra $600 for unemployment start and end in Washington ESD?

I'm trying to figure out the timeline for when Washington ESD was paying the extra $600 weekly benefit. My brother keeps saying he got it for months but I can't remember exactly when it started and stopped. I think it was sometime in 2020 but I need to know the exact dates for my tax records. Anyone remember the specific start and end dates for the federal supplement through Washington ESD?

The Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation (FPUC) program provided an additional $600 per week on top of regular UI benefits. In Washington state, it started the week ending April 4, 2020 and ended July 25, 2020. So you would have received it for about 16 weeks if you were eligible for regular unemployment during that period.

Thank you! That matches what I was thinking. So it was just those few months in spring/summer 2020.

yep thats right, i got it for those weeks too but man was it confusing at first when washington esd started adding it

After the $600 ended in July 2020, there was a brief gap, then the Lost Wages Assistance program kicked in for 6 weeks paying an extra $300. That ran from late August through September 2020. Then later the FPUC came back at $300/week in early 2021 through September 2021. The timeline gets complicated with all the different federal programs.

Oh wow I forgot about all those different programs. No wonder my tax situation was so messy that year.

I'm still trying to sort out my 2020 taxes because of all these different unemployment payments. Washington ESD sent so many different 1099-Gs.

Just to clarify for anyone else reading this - if you were getting regular UI benefits from Washington ESD during those weeks, the $600 was automatically added. You didn't have to apply separately for it. It showed up as a separate payment on your account.

Yes! I remember being so confused when I suddenly started getting two payments each week instead of one.

0 coins

That's right, it was automatic. Made budgeting weird because you never knew if the programs would continue.

man those were crazy times, i remember calling washington esd constantly trying to figure out what was happening with my claim. could never get through to anyone, just busy signals for hours

The phone system was completely overwhelmed back then. I tried calling for weeks and never got through.

I actually found this service called Claimyr that helped me get through to Washington ESD when I couldn't reach them myself. They have a system that calls for you and gets you connected to an agent. Check out claimyr.com - they even have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works.

The $600 FPUC was part of the CARES Act. Washington state implemented it pretty quickly compared to some other states. If you filed weekly claims during that period and were eligible, you should have received it automatically with your regular UI payment.

0 coins

Good to know Washington ESD was on top of implementing it quickly. Some of my friends in other states had to wait longer.

0 coins

Yeah Washington did better than a lot of states with getting the federal supplements out to claimants.

I kept detailed records during that time and can confirm - first $600 FPUC payment in Washington was for the week ending 4/4/2020, last one was 7/25/2020. Then there was the gap until LWA started in late August. The whole thing was a roller coaster.

You're more organized than me! I should have kept better records during all that chaos.

Smart to keep detailed records. Made tax time so much easier I bet.

Just remember if you're looking at your tax documents, the $600 supplements are taxable income. Washington ESD should have included them on your 1099-G forms for 2020. Make sure you account for all of it when filing.

0 coins

Yeah I learned that the hard way. Owed more in taxes than I expected because of all the extra unemployment income.

Same here, wish someone had warned me to set aside money for taxes on those payments.

For anyone else dealing with Washington ESD issues now - if you can't get through on the phone, that Claimyr service mentioned earlier actually works. I used it last month when I had questions about my claim status and got connected to an agent within an hour instead of calling all day myself.

How does that work exactly? Do they just keep calling for you?

Yeah basically they handle the calling and waiting, then connect you when they get an agent on the line. Way less frustrating than doing it yourself.

The pandemic unemployment programs were so confusing. Between regular UI, FPUC, LWA, PUA, PEUC... I could barely keep track of what I was getting and when. At least the $600 FPUC was straightforward - just extra money on top of regular benefits.

0 coins

Yeah that was the simple part! Everything else was alphabet soup.

0 coins

PUA and PEUC were the really confusing ones. Regular UI plus FPUC was easy to understand.

If you need exact dates for tax purposes, check your Washington ESD account history online. It should show all your payments with dates. The $600 supplements will be listed separately from your regular UI payments.

0 coins

Good idea, I'll log into my account and check the payment history section.

Yeah the online account keeps good records of everything. Much easier than trying to remember all the dates.

Those were stressful times for everyone. The extra $600 really helped people get through the worst of the pandemic lockdowns. Washington ESD did their best with an impossible situation.

0 coins

True, I'm grateful the extra help was available when we needed it most.

The timing couldn't have been better. Right when everything shut down and people lost their jobs.

Don't forget there was also the $300 FPUC that came back in 2021. That ran from around January through September 2021. Different from the original $600 but still helpful for people who were still unemployed.

0 coins

Right, I got some of that too but not as much since I went back to work earlier in 2021.

0 coins

The $300 helped bridge the gap for a lot of people as the economy was reopening.

If anyone is still having trouble reaching Washington ESD about old claims or tax documents, I had success with Claimyr too. Worth trying if you've been calling with no luck. The phone system is still pretty overloaded even now.

Good to know it still works for current issues, not just during the pandemic chaos.

I might need to try that if I have more questions about my old payments.

Just double-checked my records - first $600 FPUC payment was indeed April 4, 2020 week, last was July 25, 2020 week. Exactly 16 weeks total. Then nothing until LWA started up briefly in late summer.

0 coins

Perfect, that confirms what others said. Thanks for double-checking!

16 weeks sounds right. Felt longer at the time but that's accurate.

The gap between the original $600 FPUC ending and LWA starting was rough. People went from getting the extra help to nothing for several weeks while Congress debated what to do next.

0 coins

Yeah that gap was scary. You got used to the extra money then suddenly it was gone.

I remember budgeting around the $600 then having to scramble when it ended.
