Just wanted to add that if your child support order changes while you're on unemployment, it can take a few weeks for Washington ESD to update their records. I had to call multiple times to get the new amount processed correctly.
Good luck with everything! The first time is always scary but you've got this. Just take it step by step and don't hesitate to ask for help if you need it.
Also remember that if you find part-time work while collecting unemployment, you can still get partial benefits as long as you report the income. Don't assume you have to stop your claim completely.
One more thing - if you do get unemployment benefits, you can still do some part-time work. Washington ESD allows you to earn up to your weekly benefit amount before it starts reducing your benefits. So if you're getting $999, you could earn up to $999 in a week and still get some unemployment.
Thanks everyone for all the helpful information! This thread has been really informative. Hopefully I won't need to use any of this knowledge but it's good to be prepared.
Just wanted to add that even in low unemployment periods, people still lose jobs due to company closures, layoffs, seasonal work ending, etc. The individual circumstances matter way more than the overall economic picture.
Thanks everyone for helping me understand this better. I was definitely overthinking the economic angle when the real issue is just getting my layoff verified. I uploaded all my documentation this morning and I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
And if you don't hear anything in 2 weeks, definitely follow up. Sometimes things get stuck in the system.
Will do. If I can't get through by phone I'll try that Claimyr service you all mentioned.

If you need to talk to someone at ESD and can't get through on the phone, definitely try Claimyr. I wish I had known about it when I was struggling to reach them about my claim status.

•I'll keep that in mind. Hopefully I won't need to call but good to know there's an option.

•Better to know about it before you need it. The regular phone lines are basically impossible to get through on.

One last tip - set up direct deposit when you file. Getting a check in the mail takes forever and can get lost. Direct deposit is much faster and more reliable.
