Final thought - even if you only get partial backdating, you'll also be establishing your claim for ongoing weekly benefits. That's the most important thing. Don't let perfect be the enemy of good here.
Success update: I finally got through and filed my claim! Thanks everyone for the push I needed. Now I just have to wait and see what happens with the backdating situation.
Thanks to everyone who helped answer the timing question! This thread is going to help a lot of people who are confused about when to file with Washington ESD.
For anyone reading this later - the advice here is solid. File immediately, don't wait, keep filing weekly claims even if pending, and start job searching right away. That's the formula for success with Washington ESD unemployment.
If you worked in multiple states, make sure you file in the right state. Sometimes you can choose which state to file in depending on where you worked.
Just want to add that the benefit amount might seem low compared to your regular salary, but every bit helps when you're between jobs. Don't let the amount discourage you from filing if you're eligible.
Thanks for all the helpful info everyone! This thread has been way more useful than the Washington ESD website for understanding how benefit amounts work. Glad I found this community.
Final tip: make sure you keep copies of all your pay stubs and employment records. Even if Washington ESD has the wage information, it's good to have your own documentation in case there are any discrepancies or questions later.

The maximum weekly benefit amount in Washington is pretty decent compared to other states - around $1,015 per week if you qualified for the highest amount. But that's before taxes. Still, 26 weeks of that is substantial support while job hunting.

•That would definitely help us stay afloat while he's looking. Hopefully his construction wages were high enough to qualify for a decent weekly amount.

Final piece of advice - start the job search immediately even before the first benefit payment arrives. The job market is competitive and 26 weeks can disappear quickly if you wait too long to get serious about finding work. Use every resource available including unemployment workshops and networking events.

•Great advice. I think we were planning to take a week or two to decompress, but you're right that we should start immediately. Thanks everyone for all the helpful information!
