What is unemployment pay in Washington - confused about how much I'll get

I just lost my job last week and everyone keeps telling me to file for unemployment but I have no idea what unemployment pay actually is or how it works in Washington. Like do they just give you money for being unemployed? How much do you get and for how long? I worked at a restaurant for 2 years making about $16/hour. My manager said something about Washington ESD but I don't even know what that stands for. Can someone explain this to me like I'm 5? I've never had to deal with this before and I'm really stressed about paying rent next month.

Washington ESD stands for Employment Security Department - they handle unemployment benefits in our state. Unemployment pay is basically temporary financial assistance when you lose your job through no fault of your own. You get a percentage of what you were earning, usually around 60-70% of your wages up to a maximum amount. Right now the max weekly benefit is around $999 but most people get less than that.

So if I was making $16/hour working like 35 hours a week, what would that come out to roughly?

0 coins

That's about $560 a week gross, so you'd probably qualify for around $350-400 per week in unemployment benefits. But you need to file a claim first and they'll calculate your exact amount based on your work history.

0 coins

unemployment is basically insurance that you and your employer pay into while you're working. when you lose your job you can collect benefits for up to 26 weeks usually. you have to file weekly claims and prove you're looking for work though

0 coins

Wait so I was already paying for this? I never knew that was coming out of my paycheck.

0 coins

yep its a small deduction, you probably never noticed it. check your old paystubs, should say something like 'UI' or unemployment insurance

The key thing to understand is that unemployment benefits replace part of your lost wages temporarily while you search for new employment. In Washington, you need to have worked and earned enough in your 'base year' to qualify. The Washington ESD looks at your earnings from the last 5 quarters to determine both eligibility and benefit amount. You also need to be actively seeking work and able to work to continue receiving benefits.

0 coins

What's a base year? And how do they know if I'm actually looking for work?

0 coins

Base year is typically the first 4 of the last 5 completed quarters before you filed. For job search, you need to make at least 3 job search contacts per week and keep a log that Washington ESD can request to see.

I've been trying to call Washington ESD for three weeks to ask about my benefit amount and I can NEVER get through! The phone system is absolutely horrible. Has anyone found a way to actually talk to a human there?

0 coins

I had the same problem until someone told me about Claimyr. It's a service that calls Washington ESD for you and gets you connected to an actual agent. I used it last month when my claim was stuck in adjudication and finally got answers. Check out claimyr.com - they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

0 coins

Is that legit? Sounds too good to be true honestly.

0 coins

I was skeptical too but it actually worked. They called me back within an hour and had me connected to a Washington ESD agent. Way better than sitting on hold for hours just to get disconnected.

0 coins

just to add - you cant get unemployment if you quit your job or got fired for misconduct. has to be a layoff or something where its not your fault

0 coins

I got laid off because business was slow, so I think I'm good there.

0 coins

Yeah that should qualify you. Make sure you file your claim ASAP though, there's a waiting period and benefits don't start immediately.

0 coins

The Washington ESD website is secure.esd.wa.gov if you want to file online. It's honestly easier than calling and you can do it 24/7. Just have your SSN, driver's license, and employment info ready. The system will walk you through everything step by step.

0 coins

Thanks! Should I wait until Monday to file or can I do it on the weekend?

0 coins

File as soon as possible! You can file online anytime but your claim effective date is based on when you file, so don't wait.

0 coins

One thing nobody mentioned - you'll probably have to wait one week before you get your first payment. It's called a waiting week and everyone has to do it. So don't panic if you don't get money right away after filing.

0 coins

Ugh seriously? So even after I file I have to wait longer for money?

0 coins

The waiting week is served during your first week of unemployment. You still file your weekly claim but won't get paid for that first week. It's just how the system works unfortunately.

Restaurant workers sometimes have issues with unemployment because tips aren't always reported properly. Make sure Washington ESD has accurate info about your total earnings including tips, not just your hourly wage.

0 coins

Oh crap, I didn't think about tips. I probably made another $100-150 a week in tips that I reported on my taxes.

0 coins

Yeah definitely include that when you file. It could increase your benefit amount significantly.

0 coins

I'm on unemployment right now and it's honestly been a lifesaver. The weekly claims are pretty easy once you get used to it. Just answer the questions honestly about whether you worked, looked for work, etc. Takes like 5 minutes every Sunday.

0 coins

How long have you been on it? Are you required to take any job or can you be picky?

0 coins

Been on for about 8 weeks now. You have to accept 'suitable work' but that usually means something reasonably close to your previous job in terms of pay and type of work. You can't just refuse everything.

0 coins

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS A JOKE!!! I've been waiting 6 weeks for my claim to get approved and they keep asking for more documentation. Meanwhile I'm about to lose my apartment because I can't pay rent! Washington ESD doesn't care about actual people, just bureaucracy!

0 coins

What kind of documentation are they asking for? Sometimes they need employer verification or wage records.

0 coins

They want some form from my old employer that apparently got lost in the mail. I've submitted it 3 times already!

0 coins

This is exactly why I used Claimyr when I had issues. Sometimes you need to actually talk to someone at Washington ESD to sort out document problems, and their phone system makes that nearly impossible without help.

0 coins

btw make sure you set up direct deposit when you file. waiting for checks in the mail takes forever and they can get lost

0 coins

Good tip, thanks! How long does direct deposit usually take?

0 coins

usually 2-3 business days after they process your weekly claim

0 coins

Just remember that unemployment benefits are taxable income. You can have taxes withheld or pay quarterly, but don't forget about it come tax time next year!

0 coins

Ugh I didn't even think about taxes. This is getting complicated.

0 coins

It's not too bad - you can elect to have 10% withheld for federal taxes when you file your claim. Just one less thing to worry about later.

0 coins

does anyone know if you can collect unemployment if you're going to school? i'm thinking about taking some classes while im looking for work

0 coins

Generally you need to be available for full-time work to collect unemployment. Going to school might affect your eligibility unless it's job training approved by Washington ESD or you can work around your class schedule.

0 coins

ok good to know, ill stick to just job searching for now

0 coins

The hardest part for me was proving I was looking for work. You need to keep detailed records of every job you apply for - company name, position, date, how you applied, etc. Washington ESD can audit your job search activities.

0 coins

Do they actually check up on this stuff regularly?

0 coins

They do random audits and if you can't provide your job search log, they can deny benefits and make you pay back what you received. Better safe than sorry.

0 coins

I worked in HR for years and saw this from the employer side. When someone files for unemployment, we get notified and can contest it if we think they shouldn't qualify. Most of the time we don't bother unless it was clearly misconduct or they quit without good cause.

0 coins

So my old employer might try to block my claim?

0 coins

If you were laid off due to slow business like you said, they probably won't contest it. Layoffs are pretty straightforward. It's usually only contested when the circumstances are unclear.

0 coins

quick question - can you work part time and still collect some unemployment? my friend said something about partial benefits

0 coins

Yes, Washington has partial unemployment benefits. If you work part-time and earn less than your weekly benefit amount plus $5, you can still collect reduced benefits. They deduct your earnings from your benefit amount but you keep the first $5.

0 coins

thats actually really helpful, thanks!

0 coins

One more thing - if you have any issues with your claim getting stuck in 'adjudication' or pending status, don't just wait around. That's when you really need to get someone on the phone at Washington ESD to figure out what's holding it up.

0 coins

This happened to me and I waited 2 months thinking it would resolve itself. Finally used that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier and found out they needed one simple form from me. Got it sorted in a week after that.

0 coins

Exactly! Sometimes it's something really minor that's holding up the whole claim, but you can't find out what unless you actually talk to someone.

0 coins

thanks everyone this has been super helpful! I feel way less confused about the whole process now. Gonna file my claim tonight and hopefully get this sorted out

0 coins

Good luck! Remember to file your weekly claims every week even if your initial claim is still processing. Don't skip any weeks or you could lose benefits for those periods.

0 coins

Will do, thanks for all the help everyone. This community is awesome!
