What is the max pay for unemployment benefits in Washington ESD 2025?
I'm trying to figure out what the maximum weekly benefit amount is for Washington state unemployment in 2025. I've been looking through the Washington ESD website but can't find a clear answer. My last job paid pretty well and I want to know if there's a cap on how much I can receive. Does anyone know what the current maximum weekly benefit is? Also wondering if this amount changes each year or stays the same.

The maximum weekly benefit amount for Washington unemployment in 2025 is $999 per week. This is calculated based on your earnings during your base period, but $999 is the absolute maximum anyone can receive regardless of how much they earned. The amount does get adjusted annually based on average wages in the state.

•Thanks! That's higher than I expected. Do you know how they calculate what percentage of my wages I'll actually get?

Carter Holmes
•It's typically around 50% of your average weekly wage during your highest earning quarter in the base period, but subject to that $999 maximum.

wow $999 seems like a lot but i guess it depends on what you were making before. my claim only shows like $350/week so obviously i wasn't making that much lol

•Yeah the benefit amount really varies. I was making around $75k annually and my weekly benefit is about $650, so it's definitely not the full maximum for most people.

•that makes sense, i was only part time before so $350 is probably right for me

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to verify your benefit amount, I had success using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get connected to an agent. They have this system that calls for you and gets you through the queue. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Way better than spending hours trying to call yourself.

•Interesting, never heard of that service before. Did it actually work for you?

•Yeah it worked great. I was able to speak to someone within like 20 minutes instead of calling all day and getting busy signals.

•How much does something like that cost though? Seems like it might be expensive.

The $999 maximum is correct for 2025. Keep in mind this is before taxes too - you can choose to have federal and state taxes withheld from your benefits, which I'd recommend doing to avoid a big tax bill later.

Mia Alvarez
•Good point about taxes. I didn't even think about Winter that. How much do they typically withhold?
0 coins
Angelica Smith
•Federal is 10% and Washington state doesn't have income tax, so just the 10% federal withholding if you choose it.

WASHINGTON ESD NEEDS TO MAKE THIS INFORMATION EASIER TO FIND!!! I spent forever on their website trying to figure out benefit amounts. Why do they make everything so complicated???

•I totally agree, their website is really confusing to navigate. The information is buried in different sections.

•You can find the current benefit amount table in the 'Benefit Calculator' section, but I agree it's not prominently displayed on the main pages.

Just to add - the $999 maximum only applies if you were making around $75,000+ annually. Most people won't hit that maximum. Your actual benefit is based on your highest earning quarter in your base period.

•That makes sense. I was making about $65k so I probably won't get the full maximum but should be decent.

•Yeah you'll probably be somewhere in the $600-700 range based on that salary, which is still pretty good for unemployment benefits.

does anyone know if the maximum changes every year? like will it be different in 2026?
0 coins
Carter Holmes
•Yes, it typically increases each year based on average wage growth in Washington state. It was lower in previous years and will likely continue to increase.

Sophia Long
•ok good to know, thanks for explaining that

I'm still confused about how they calculate the base period. Is that the last 4 quarters I worked or something different?
0 coins
Angelica Smith
•The base period is typically the first 4 of the last 5 completed calendar quarters before you filed your claim. So if you filed in January 2025, your base period would be October 2023 through September 2024.

Charlotte Jones
•That seems like a weird way to calculate it but I guess that's how the system works.

Angelica Smith
•It does seem odd at first, but it's designed that way because they need complete quarters to calculate your average wages accurately.

For anyone still trying to get through to Washington ESD about their benefit calculations, I had luck with Claimyr too. Worth checking out if you've been stuck on hold forever.

•Seems like a few people have mentioned this service. Might be worth trying if I need to call about my claim.

•Yeah it definitely beats the alternative of calling all day and never getting through to anyone.

The calculation can be pretty complex depending on your work history. I had irregular hours and it took Washington ESD a while to figure out my weekly benefit amount during adjudication.

Mia Alvarez
•How long did adjudication take for you? I'm hoping mine goes through quickly.

Jade O'Malley
•It took about 3 weeks for them to determine my benefit amount because I had multiple employers during the base period.

just wanted to confirm the $999 is definitely right for this year. i know someone who hits that maximum and they were making around $80k before unemployment

Mia Alvarez
•Good to know, thanks for the confirmation. Sounds like you need to be making pretty good money to hit that max.

•yeah definitely, most people are going to be getting less than that but it's still a decent safety net

Remember you also have to meet the job search requirements to keep getting benefits, regardless of the amount. Don't forget to log your job search activities in WorkSourceWA.

Mia Alvarez
•Right, I need to set up my WorkSource account still. How many job searches do I need to log each week?
0 coins
Ella Lewis
•It's typically 3 job search activities per week, but check your specific requirements when you file your weekly claim.

The benefit calculator on the Washington ESD website can give you an estimate if you have your wage information handy. It's not 100% accurate but gives you a ballpark figure.

Mia Alvarez
•I tried using that but wasn't sure if I was entering the information correctly. Maybe I'll give it another shot.

Andrew Pinnock
•Yeah it can be tricky to use. You need your quarterly wage information which you can get from old pay stubs or tax documents.

Washington has one of the higher maximum benefit amounts compared to other states, so $999 is actually pretty generous if you qualify for it.
0 coins
Harper Thompson
•That's true, I looked it up and some states have much lower maximums. We're lucky in Washington.

Brianna Schmidt
•Exactly, the cost of living here is high but at least the unemployment benefits try to reflect that somewhat.

One thing to keep in mind is that you can receive these benefits for up to 26 weeks in most cases, so even if you're not getting the maximum, it can really help while you're job searching.

Mia Alvarez
•26 weeks sounds like a decent amount of time to find something new. Hopefully I won't need that long though.

Alexis Renard
•Yeah hopefully not, but it's good to know the safety net is there if you need it.

Just as an update on the Claimyr thing - I used it again last week to check on a payment issue and got through to Washington ESD in about 15 minutes. Really saves a lot of time and frustration compared to calling directly.

•Yeah it's worth it if you actually need to talk to someone at Washington ESD. The regular phone system is just impossible to get through.

For what it's worth, I was making $70k and my weekly benefit amount came out to $623, so that gives you another data point for how the calculation works.
0 coins
Mia Alvarez
•That's helpful, thanks! Sounds like I'll probably be in a similar range based on my salary.
0 coins
Tyler Lefleur
•Yeah should be pretty close to that. The calculation is fairly straightforward once Washington ESD processes your claim.

Don't forget that you need to file your weekly claims every week to actually receive the benefits, even if you're getting the maximum amount. Missing a week can cause issues.
0 coins
Mia Alvarez
•Good reminder. When do the weekly claims usually need to be filed by?
0 coins
Madeline Blaze
•You have to file by the end of the week for that week's benefits. I usually do mine on Sunday nights to make sure I don't forget.

The maximum of $999 is definitely correct for 2025. I just checked the official Washington ESD benefit chart and that's what it shows. Good luck with your claim!

•No problem! The unemployment system can be confusing but once you understand the basics it's not too bad.

Hope this thread helped answer your question about the maximum benefit amount. $999 per week is the current max, but your actual amount will depend on your previous earnings. Best of luck with your claim process!
