What is the max unemployment benefits in Washington state right now?
I'm trying to figure out what the maximum weekly unemployment benefit amount is in Washington for 2025. I know it changes every year but I can't find current info on the Washington ESD website that's clear. My last job paid pretty well so I want to know if I'll get the max amount or if there's a cap. Anyone know what the current maximum is?

The maximum weekly benefit amount for regular unemployment insurance in Washington state for 2025 is $999 per week. This is based on your earnings in your base period, specifically the highest quarter. You need to have earned at least $59,940 in your highest quarter to qualify for the maximum.

•Thanks! That's higher than I expected. How do they calculate what quarter counts as my highest earnings quarter?

Yara Elias
•Your base period is typically the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters before you filed your claim. They look at each quarter separately and use whichever one had your highest wages.

wait is that right? i thought it was like $800 something. maybe that was last year?

Yara Elias
•It was $929 in 2024, so yes it went up for 2025. The amount increases each year based on the state's average wage calculations.

•oh ok that makes sense, thanks for clarifying

Just remember that even if you qualify for the max amount, you still have to meet all the other requirements like doing your job search activities and filing your weekly claims on time. The amount doesn't matter if you get disqualified for not following the rules.

•Good point. I've been reading about the job search requirements. Is it still 3 job search activities per week?

Keisha Jackson
•Yes, minimum 3 activities per week and you have to log them in your WorkSourceWA account. Make sure you understand what counts as a valid activity.

I'm getting so frustrated trying to reach Washington ESD to ask questions about my benefit amount calculation. I've been calling for weeks and either get busy signals or get disconnected after waiting forever. Has anyone found a way to actually talk to someone there?

•I had the same problem until I found this service called Claimyr that helped me get through to an actual agent. You can check it out at claimyr.com - they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Basically they handle the calling for you and connect you when an agent picks up.

does the max amount include taxes or is that before taxes?
0 coins
Yara Elias
•That's the gross amount before taxes. You can choose to have federal taxes withheld (10%) and state taxes aren't taken from unemployment benefits in Washington.

•ok so i should expect to pay taxes on it at the end of the year then

The whole system is ridiculous honestly. Even if you get the max amount it's still not enough to live on if you had a decent job before. And then they make you jump through all these hoops with job searching when there aren't even good jobs available.

•I understand the frustration but the system is designed as temporary assistance, not full wage replacement. The job search requirements exist to help people get back to work.

•easy for you to say, some of us are in industries that got decimated and there just aren't jobs out there that pay what we used to make

Going back to the calculation - if I made $65,000 in my highest quarter, does that mean I definitely get the max $999 per week?
0 coins
Yara Elias
•Yes, since $65,000 is above the $59,940 threshold, you should qualify for the maximum weekly benefit amount of $999, assuming you meet all other eligibility requirements.

•Perfect, that's what I was hoping to hear. Thanks for all the detailed info!

I've been getting $847 per week and thought that was the max. Now I'm wondering if Washington ESD made an error in calculating my benefits. How do I find out what my actual calculation should be?

Yara Elias
•You can request a benefit calculation breakdown from Washington ESD. Log into your eServices account and look for benefit calculation details, or you may need to call them to get the specifics of how they calculated your amount.

•Great, I'll check my online account first. If I can't find it there I guess I'll have to join the club of people trying to call them.

Does anyone know how long you can collect the max amount? Is it still 26 weeks or did that change?
0 coins
Keisha Jackson
•Standard unemployment benefits in Washington are still up to 26 weeks, but the exact number of weeks you qualify for depends on your earnings history and the unemployment rate. Some people may qualify for fewer weeks.

•Got it, so it's not automatically 26 weeks for everyone. I'll need to check what my specific entitlement is.

this is all making me realize i should probably apply soon since i got laid off last month. been putting it off but sounds like the sooner the better

Keisha Jackson
•Definitely apply as soon as possible. Benefits don't pay retroactively from when you became unemployed, only from when you file your claim. And there's a one-week waiting period before benefits start.

•thanks for the push, i'll file this weekend

I tried using that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier and it actually worked! Got connected to a Washington ESD agent in about 2 hours instead of the days I'd been trying on my own. They were able to explain exactly how my benefit amount was calculated.

•Really? You're the second person to mention it working. Maybe I should try it too since I'm getting nowhere with regular calling.

•Yeah I was skeptical at first but honestly it saved me so much time and frustration. Worth checking out their demo video if you're on the fence about it.

Question about the base period calculation - what if I had irregular income? Like some quarters were really high and others were low? Do they average it out or just use the single highest quarter?
0 coins
Yara Elias
•They use just your single highest quarter for the weekly benefit calculation, not an average. But they do look at your total base period wages to determine how many weeks of benefits you qualify for.

Malik Thomas
•That's actually good news for me since I had one really good quarter. Thanks for explaining that!

So if the max is $999 per week, that's about $4,000 per month. Still not great but better than I thought unemployment would be.

•Don't forget you have to pay taxes on it and it's only temporary. Plus all the stress of dealing with Washington ESD bureaucracy.

•True, but it's still something while I look for a new job. Better than nothing I guess.

I work in tech and my salary was pretty high. Will Washington ESD look at my most recent job or all jobs in the base period when calculating benefits?
0 coins
Yara Elias
•They look at all wages from all employers during your base period. It doesn't matter which job was most recent - they calculate based on total quarterly wages from all sources.

•Good to know. I had a job change mid-year so that helps clarify things.

can you get more than the max if you have dependents or anything like that?
0 coins
Keisha Jackson
•No, Washington state doesn't provide additional benefits for dependents. The $999 maximum is the absolute cap regardless of family size or other circumstances.

•bummer, was hoping there might be extra help for families

Just want to add that the Washington ESD website actually has a benefit calculator tool that can give you an estimate based on your wages. It's not 100% exact but gives you a ballpark figure.
0 coins
Connor Byrne
•Oh that's helpful! I'll look for that on their website. Would save me from having to call and wait on hold forever.

•Yeah it's pretty useful for getting a rough idea. Just keep in mind the actual calculation might vary slightly.

•Glad we could help! The unemployment system can be confusing but once you understand how it works it makes more sense.

•Definitely. Now I just need to make sure I keep up with all the weekly requirements so I don't lose my benefits.

One more thing to keep in mind - if you're doing any part-time work while collecting unemployment, that can affect your weekly benefit amount. They reduce your benefits dollar for dollar after the first $5 you earn.
0 coins
Connor Byrne
•Good point. So if I made $100 in a week from odd jobs, they'd reduce my $999 benefit by $95?
0 coins
Chloe Taylor
•Exactly. You'd get $904 that week instead of the full $999. But you still have to report all earnings honestly.

I tried that Claimyr thing too after seeing it mentioned here. Worked great for getting through to ask about my adjudication issue. Way better than the endless busy signals I was getting before.

•Yeah it's worth it just for the peace of mind of knowing you'll actually get to talk to someone instead of wasting hours calling.

Thanks for all the info everyone. This has been way more helpful than the Washington ESD website FAQ section. At least now I know what to expect when I file my claim.
