What is the max for unemployment benefits in Washington - current weekly amount?

I'm trying to figure out what the maximum weekly unemployment benefit amount is in Washington state right now. I've been searching the Washington ESD website but can't find a clear answer. My last job paid pretty well and I want to know if I'll get the full amount or if there's a cap. Does anyone know what the current maximum weekly benefit is for 2025?

The maximum weekly benefit amount in Washington for 2025 is $999 per week. This is based on your highest quarter of earnings in your base period. You need to have earned at least $62,244 in your highest quarter to qualify for the maximum amount.

0 coins

Thanks! That's higher than I expected. How do they calculate if you qualify for the max amount?

0 coins

They take your highest quarter earnings and divide by 26. So if you made $25,974 in your best quarter, you'd get the max $999 weekly.

0 coins

i think its less than that, maybe like $800 something? i got approved last month and mine was way lower than $999

0 coins

The $999 is the maximum possible, but most people don't qualify for that amount. Your benefit is based on your actual earnings history, not everyone gets the max.

0 coins

oh ok that makes sense. i was wondering why mine was only like $450 a week

I've been trying to call Washington ESD for weeks to ask about my benefit calculation and can never get through. The phone system is absolutely terrible - I either get busy signals or get disconnected after waiting for hours.

0 coins

Have you tried using Claimyr? I found it on claimyr.com and it actually got me through to a Washington ESD agent. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling.

0 coins

Never heard of that. Is it legit or some kind of scam?

0 coins

It's real - basically automates the calling process for you. I was skeptical too but it worked when nothing else did.

0 coins

The Washington ESD system is such a mess. They make it impossible to get information and when you finally do get through, half the time the agents don't know what they're talking about either.

0 coins

While the system has issues, the benefit calculation is actually pretty straightforward. It's just hard to get someone to explain it clearly.

0 coins

Yeah well good luck getting anyone on the phone to explain anything. I've been trying for 3 weeks.

0 coins

Just to clarify the calculation - Washington uses your base period which is the first 4 of the last 5 completed calendar quarters before you filed. They look at your highest quarter earnings and your total base period earnings to determine your weekly benefit amount.

0 coins

This is really helpful. So if I filed in January 2025, my base period would be January 2024 through December 2024?

0 coins

Not exactly - it would be October 2023 through September 2024. The base period excludes the most recent completed quarter.

0 coins

this is confusing why dont they just use the last year of work?

0 coins

The minimum weekly benefit in Washington is $295 and the maximum is $999 as of 2025. Most people fall somewhere in between based on their earnings history. You also need to meet the monetary eligibility requirements during your base period.

0 coins

What are the monetary eligibility requirements? I assume you need to have worked a certain amount?

0 coins

You need at least $7,000 in your base period and earnings in at least 680 hours of work. Plus your highest quarter earnings need to be at least 1.25 times your lowest quarter.

0 coins

does anyone know if they increased the max amount recently? i thought it used to be lower

0 coins

Yes, Washington adjusts the maximum benefit amount annually based on the state's average wage. It's been increasing steadily over the past few years.

0 coins

I remember when it was like $600 max just a few years ago. At least they're keeping up with inflation somewhat.

0 coins

I got my monetary determination letter and it shows exactly how they calculated my weekly benefit. Really wish Washington ESD would make this clearer on their website instead of making people guess.

0 coins

How long did it take to get your determination letter? I just filed last week.

0 coins

About 5 business days for me. Make sure you're checking your SecureAccess Washington account for documents, not just waiting for mail.

0 coins

Update - I finally got through to Washington ESD using that Claimyr thing someone mentioned. The agent confirmed my benefit amount and explained the calculation. Definitely worth trying if you're stuck in phone hell like I was.

0 coins

How much did that cost you? I'm desperate to talk to someone but don't want to get ripped off.

0 coins

They don't charge you anything upfront - just helps you get through the phone system. Way better than spending hours redialing.

0 coins

my cousin in seattle said she gets like $750 a week but i only get $320 and we made about the same money. how is that possible?

0 coins

It depends on when you each worked and filed. Your base periods might be different, or she might have had a higher quarter than you realized.

0 coins

we both worked at the same company but she got laid off 6 months before me. maybe thats why?

0 coins

That's likely it - different base periods can result in very different benefit amounts even with similar overall earnings.

0 coins

The whole system is designed to confuse people. They should just pay everyone the same amount and be done with it.

0 coins

The calculation is based on your earnings to replace a portion of your lost wages. It wouldn't make sense to pay everyone the same amount regardless of what they earned.

0 coins

I guess but it's still overly complicated for no good reason.

0 coins

For anyone still confused about the calculation, Washington ESD has a benefit calculator on their website, though it's not always easy to find. Search for 'unemployment benefit calculator' on their site.

0 coins

I tried that calculator but it gave me a different amount than what I actually received. Not sure how accurate it is.

0 coins

The calculator is just an estimate. Your actual benefit depends on the exact wages Washington ESD has on file for you, which might differ from what you remember.

0 coins

been getting unemployment for 2 months now and still dont really understand how they came up with my amount lol

0 coins

Check your monetary determination letter - it breaks down exactly how they calculated your weekly benefit amount and shows your base period wages.

0 coins

oh yeah i think i got that letter but threw it away. can i get another copy?

0 coins

Yes, you can download it from your SecureAccess Washington account under correspondence.

0 coins

Washington's max is actually pretty good compared to other states. Some states cap it way lower even though cost of living is similar.

0 coins

True, though $999 still doesn't go very far in Seattle. Better than nothing though.

0 coins

Unemployment isn't meant to fully replace your salary, just help you get by while job searching. The max covers about 60% of the state average wage.

0 coins

I work in HR and get questions about this all the time. The key thing to remember is that your benefit is based on your highest quarter earnings, not your most recent pay or annual salary.

0 coins

That's good to know. So if I had a really good quarter with overtime or bonuses, that would help my benefit calculation?

0 coins

Exactly. If you had a quarter with lots of overtime or a bonus, that could significantly increase your weekly benefit amount.

0 coins

Anyone know if the max amount applies to all types of unemployment benefits? Like if you're on standby status or something?

0 coins

Yes, the same maximum applies to regular unemployment, standby, and other unemployment benefit types. The calculation method is the same.

0 coins

Good to know, thanks. I'm on standby from my union job and wasn't sure if different rules applied.

0 coins

Just wanted to add that if you think Washington ESD calculated your benefit wrong, you can appeal the monetary determination. I had to do this when they missed some of my wages and it got corrected.

0 coins

How long did the appeal process take? I think they might have missed some of my earnings too.

0 coins

About 6 weeks total, but they backdated the increase to when I first filed. Worth doing if you think there's an error.

0 coins

If you need to talk to someone about appealing, Claimyr can help you get through to the right department. That's how I got mine sorted out.

0 coins

thanks everyone this thread was super helpful. i thought the max was way lower than $999. gives me hope that my benefit might be decent when i file next week

0 coins

Remember you need pretty high earnings to get the maximum. Most people get somewhere between $300-700 per week depending on their work history.

0 coins

yeah i figured. even if i get half the max that would help a lot while im job hunting

0 coins

One more tip - make sure all your employers reported your wages correctly to Washington ESD. I had one employer who reported my wages late and it initially affected my benefit calculation.

0 coins

How can you check if all your wages were reported correctly?

0 coins

When you get your monetary determination, it lists all the employers and wages they have on file. Compare that to your pay stubs and W-2s.

0 coins

Bottom line - $999 is the max weekly in Washington for 2025, but your actual amount depends on your highest quarter earnings. Most people get significantly less than the maximum.

0 coins

Perfect summary, thanks. This thread answered all my questions about the maximum benefit amount.
