What info do you need to file for unemployment with Washington ESD?
I'm about to lose my job next week and want to get prepared to file my unemployment claim right away. What specific information does Washington ESD require when you first apply? I've heard you need employment history but not sure how far back or what other documents. Don't want to start the application and then have to stop because I'm missing something important.

You'll need your Social Security number, driver's license or state ID, employment history for the last 18 months (employer names, addresses, dates worked, reason for separation), and bank account info if you want direct deposit. Also helpful to have your most recent pay stub.

•18 months of employment history - that's a lot! Do I need exact addresses for every employer or just the main office?

Oliver Zimmermann
•Exact addresses if you have them, but Washington ESD can usually find the info if you provide the company name and city. Better to have too much info than not enough.

make sure you have your employer's federal tax ID number too, that can speed things up. and if you were laid off get any paperwork from HR about the layoff

•Good point about the tax ID - I can probably get that from my last pay stub or W-2.

I just went through this process and it's pretty straightforward once you have everything ready. The Washington ESD online application walks you through each step. One thing I wish I'd known - if you can't reach them by phone to ask questions, there's actually a service called Claimyr that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents. Check out claimyr.com - they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Interesting, I hadn't heard of that service. The Washington ESD phone lines are notoriously hard to get through on.

•Yeah those phone lines are brutal. I spent 3 hours on hold last month just to ask one simple question about my job search requirements.

Don't forget you also need to be able to work and available for work when you file. They ask about any medical conditions or other reasons you might not be able to accept a job immediately.

•That makes sense. I'm healthy and ready to work, so that shouldn't be an issue for me.

•They also ask about your availability - like if you're only willing to work certain hours or days. Be careful how you answer that because it can affect your eligibility.

IMPORTANT: File your claim the week you become unemployed, not before! I made that mistake and it delayed everything. Washington ESD is very strict about when you can start your claim.

•Good to know! My last day is Friday so I'll file that weekend or Monday.

Oliver Zimmermann
•Actually you can file the day after your last day of work. Don't wait too long because there's a waiting week anyway.

The online application asks for your gross wages from each employer in your base period. If you don't have exact amounts, estimates are okay but try to be as accurate as possible since it affects your benefit amount.

•How do they determine the base period? Is it just the last year of work?
0 coins
Oliver Zimmermann
•Base period is usually the first 4 of the last 5 completed calendar quarters before you file. So if you file in January 2025, it would be January 2024 through September 2024.

if you worked in other states recently you might need to file an interstate claim. washington esd can help figure that out but it's more complicated

•I've only worked in Washington, so that won't be an issue for me thankfully.

One tip - before you file, make sure you understand the job search requirements. You'll need to make at least 3 job search activities per week and keep detailed records. The requirements are pretty specific about what counts.

•What kind of activities count? Just applying for jobs or other things too?

•Job applications, networking events, career fairs, interviews, creating profiles on job sites - they have a whole list on the Washington ESD website.

Make sure your contact information is current and check your email regularly. Washington ESD sends important notices electronically and if you miss something it can mess up your benefits.

•Good reminder. I should probably set up a separate email folder for all the Washington ESD communications.

The application will ask about any severance pay, vacation pay, or other compensation you're receiving. Be honest about this stuff because they cross-check with employers and if there are discrepancies it can trigger an adjudication investigation.

•I might get a small severance package. Does that delay when I can start collecting benefits?
0 coins
Malik Johnson
•It depends on how Washington ESD classifies the severance. Some types delay benefits, others don't. That's definitely something you'd want to clarify with them directly.

Pro tip: take screenshots of your completed application before you submit it. If there are any issues later, you'll have proof of what you originally submitted.

•Smart idea! I'll definitely do that.

I had to call Washington ESD three times during my application process to clarify things. If you run into issues, that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier actually worked for me. Saved me hours of trying to get through on my own.

•How does that service work exactly? Do they connect you directly to Washington ESD?
0 coins
Chloe Martin
•Yeah, they handle the calling and waiting, then connect you when an agent picks up. Worth checking out if you hit any snags.

don't stress too much about having every single detail perfect. you can always provide additional info later if needed. the important thing is to get your claim filed quickly

•That's reassuring, thanks. I was worried about making mistakes on the application.

Just remember that after you file your initial claim, you'll need to file weekly claims every week to actually receive benefits. The initial application just establishes your eligibility.

Amina Toure
•Right, I need to remember to do the weekly claims. Is there a specific day of the week I need to file those?
0 coins
Oliver Zimmermann
•Weekly claims are available starting Sunday and you have until Saturday to file for the previous week. Most people file on Sunday or Monday.

If you're laid off due to lack of work, make sure your employer knows you're filing for unemployment. Sometimes they need to respond to Washington ESD requests for information about your separation.

•Good point. I'll give HR a heads up that I'll be filing for unemployment.

The whole process seems overwhelming at first but it's really not that bad. Washington ESD has gotten better at making the online system user-friendly. Just gather your documents and take it step by step.

•Thanks for the encouragement! I'm feeling more confident about tackling this now.

Last thing - if your claim gets flagged for adjudication for any reason, don't panic. It's pretty common and usually resolves within a few weeks. Just respond to any requests for information promptly.

Amina Toure
•What would cause a claim to go to adjudication?
0 coins
Oliver Zimmermann
•Lots of things - questions about why you left your job, wage discrepancies, eligibility issues. It's just Washington ESD making sure everything is correct.

One more vote for that Claimyr service if you need to talk to someone at Washington ESD. I was skeptical at first but it really does work. Better than spending all day hitting redial.

•Seems like several people have had good experiences with it. I'll keep that in mind if I need help.

You've got this! The key is just being prepared with your information and filing as soon as you're eligible. Washington ESD processes thousands of claims every week so they've got the system down pretty well.
