What happens if I stop certifying for unemployment with Washington ESD?

I've been filing my weekly claims for about 6 weeks now but I'm wondering what actually happens if I just stop certifying? Like if I miss a week or two, does my whole claim get canceled or can I pick back up where I left off? I might have some temporary work coming up and I'm not sure if I should keep filing or just stop for a while. Anyone know how this works with Washington ESD?

If you stop certifying, your claim doesn't automatically get canceled but you won't receive benefits for the weeks you don't file. You can usually restart filing weekly claims if you become unemployed again, but there might be some paperwork involved depending on how long you're off.

Good to know it doesn't just disappear. Do you know if there's a time limit on how long I can be off before having to start over completely?

0 coins

I think you have about a year from when your claim was established, but don't quote me on that. You should double check with Washington ESD to be sure.

just went through this myself - stopped filing for 3 weeks when I had some temp work. when I went back to file it asked me a bunch of extra questions about why I stopped and what work I did. wasn't a big deal but took longer than usual

0 coins

That's exactly what I was worried about. Did you have to provide any documentation about the temp work?

0 coins

nah just had to answer questions online about dates and how much I made. pretty straightforward

0 coins

Be careful about just stopping without reporting work though. If you're working even temporarily, you're supposed to report that income when you file your weekly claim. You might still be eligible for partial benefits depending on how much you earn.

0 coins

Oh I didn't realize you could get partial benefits. The temp work would only be like 20 hours a week so maybe I should keep filing?

0 coins

Definitely keep filing and report your earnings. Washington ESD has a formula where they reduce your benefit amount based on what you earn, but you might still get something.

0 coins

Yeah this is important - I made the mistake of not filing when I had part time work and missed out on like $400 in partial benefits I could have gotten

0 coins

I had to stop certifying for 2 months due to some confusion with my claim status. When I tried to restart, I couldn't get through to anyone at Washington ESD for weeks. The phone lines are always busy and the online chat never works. Finally used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an actual agent in like 10 minutes. They have a video demo showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ Saved me so much frustration.

0 coins

Never heard of that but might be useful if I run into issues. Did it cost anything?

0 coins

Yeah there's a fee but honestly worth it when you can't get through any other way. Beats spending hours on hold or getting hung up on.

0 coins

That actually looks legit, thanks for sharing. I've been trying to reach someone about my adjudication for weeks

0 coins

THIS IS EXACTLY WHY THE UNEMPLOYMENT SYSTEM IS BROKEN! You shouldn't have to worry about all these complicated rules just to get benefits you've earned. And then when you need help they make it impossible to reach anyone. It's like they WANT to make it difficult.

0 coins

I mean it is pretty confusing. I just want to know if I can take some work without losing everything.

0 coins

Exactly my point! This should be simple and clear but instead we're all here trying to figure out what Washington ESD actually wants us to do.

0 coins

the main thing is don't just ghost them completely. if you know you're going to miss filing for a while, you can call and let them know or there might be a way to report it online. better to be proactive than deal with problems later

0 coins

Good advice. I'll probably try calling before I stop filing just to be safe.

0 coins

good luck getting through lol. but yeah it's worth trying

Just to clarify the earlier question about time limits - your benefit year is typically 52 weeks from when you first filed your claim. During that time you can stop and restart filing as needed, but you need to have enough weeks left in your benefit year to collect.

0 coins

That makes sense. So if I filed 6 weeks ago I'd have 46 weeks left to use whenever?

0 coins

Right, but also keep in mind you only get a certain number of weeks of benefits total, not unlimited weeks within that year.

0 coins

I think it's 26 weeks maximum for regular unemployment in Washington

0 coins

One more thing to consider - if you stop filing and then need to restart, they might ask you to do the work search activities for the weeks you weren't filing. Not sure if that's always the case but something to keep in mind.

0 coins

Work search activities even for weeks I didn't claim benefits? That seems weird.

0 coins

I'm not 100% sure on this but I remember reading something about it. Might depend on your specific situation.

0 coins

i stopped for like a month last year and when i came back they made me verify my identity again which was a pain. took forever to get approved. just something to be aware of

0 coins

Ugh that sounds annoying. Did you have to send in documents?

0 coins

yeah had to upload my ID and social security card again. not sure why since nothing had changed

0 coins

Has anyone tried that Claimyr thing mentioned earlier? I'm desperate to talk to someone about my claim being stuck in adjudication for 5 weeks now. Regular phone number just hangs up on me every time.

0 coins

Yeah that's exactly why I used it. Adjudication issues are impossible to resolve without talking to an actual person and Claimyr got me through right away.

0 coins

Going to check it out, thanks. This whole process is so frustrating.

0 coins

Same boat here with adjudication. Let me know how it goes if you try it!

0 coins

Quick question - do you have to report the temp work income on the week you worked or the week you got paid? I always get confused about the timing.

0 coins

It's for the week you worked, not when you got paid. So if you worked Monday-Friday, report it for that Sunday-Saturday benefit week.

0 coins

Thanks! That's what I thought but wanted to make sure.

0 coins

The whole partial benefits thing is actually pretty decent if you can figure it out. I was working part time for a few months and still getting like $150 a week from unemployment. Better than nothing!

0 coins

That's encouraging! I was worried taking any work would kill my benefits completely.

0 coins

Nope, they just reduce it based on what you earn. As long as you report everything honestly you should be fine.

0 coins

whatever you do don't lie about working or not report income. they will find out eventually and then you'll owe money back plus penalties. not worth it

0 coins

Definitely planning to report everything. Don't want to deal with overpayment issues later.

0 coins

smart move. i've seen people get in real trouble for that stuff

0 coins

My experience has been that Washington ESD is actually pretty flexible about stopping and starting as long as you're honest about what's going on. The problems come when people try to game the system or aren't upfront about their situation.

0 coins

That's reassuring. I just want to do everything by the book.

0 coins

Sounds like you're on the right track then. Just be honest and follow the rules and you should be fine.

0 coins

Does anyone know if temp work through an agency counts differently than direct employment? I have an opportunity through a staffing company.

0 coins

It's all considered employment as far as Washington ESD is concerned. Doesn't matter if it's through an agency or direct hire - you report the income the same way.

0 coins

Perfect, thanks. Just wanted to make sure there weren't different rules.

0 coins

I've been through this cycle a few times - temp work, stop filing, temp work ends, restart filing. It's become pretty routine. The key is just staying organized and keeping track of what you've done.

0 coins

Any tips for staying organized? I'm worried I'll mess something up.

0 coins

I keep a simple spreadsheet with dates I worked, how much I made, and when I filed claims. Makes it easy to reference if they ask questions later.

0 coins

Just want to add that if you do need to contact Washington ESD about stopping/starting claims, that Claimyr service really does work. Used it twice now and both times got through to an agent quickly. Much better than the regular phone number.

0 coins

Good to know there's a backup option if I need it. Thanks everyone for all the helpful info!

0 coins

No problem! This stuff is confusing enough without having to figure it out alone.

0 coins

bottom line is you can stop and restart but just be prepared for extra questions and possibly some delays when you come back. not the end of the world but something to plan for

0 coins

Makes sense. I'll factor that into my decision about taking the temp work.

0 coins

good luck with whatever you decide!

0 coins

This thread has been super helpful. I'm in a similar situation and was stressing about it. Nice to know I'm not the only one trying to figure this stuff out.

0 coins

Right? It's nice to get real answers from people who've actually been through it.

0 coins

Exactly. Way better than trying to decode the official Washington ESD website.
