For what it's worth, I think Washington's unemployment benefits are pretty decent compared to other states. The maximum is almost $1000 a week which is way higher than a lot of places.
Just to add one more - people sometimes think once their benefit year ends, they automatically get a new claim. You actually have to reapply and may not qualify if your work history doesn't meet the requirements again.
Hope this helps with your studying! The main thing to remember is that UI has lots of rules and requirements that people often misunderstand. When in doubt, always check the official Washington ESD website or talk to an agent.
And remember, if you do need to reach an agent later, claimyr.com can save you hours of frustration trying to get through the busy phone lines!
Something else to think about - even if your quit doesn't qualify as good cause, you might still be eligible for benefits later if you work at another job for a while. Washington ESD looks at your most recent separation from work.
The bottom line is that substantial hours reduction CAN be good cause for quitting in Washington. You have pay stubs showing the reduction and you tried to work with your employer. That's a reasonable foundation for a claim. File it and see what happens.
Bottom line - Washington ESD requires you to certify every week that you're able and available for full-time work. If you can't honestly make that certification due to disability, you shouldn't be collecting unemployment benefits. It's that simple.

This conversation has been really eye-opening. I never connected prison labor to unemployment issues before, but it makes complete sense economically.

•It's one of those systemic issues that isn't immediately obvious but has widespread effects on the job market.

•More people need to understand these connections. It affects everyone, not just people who have been incarcerated.

Thanks everyone for the discussion and advice. I'm going to keep documenting my job search for Washington ESD and look into those reentry programs. Hopefully the job market improves as more people become aware of these issues.
