The bottom line is that most people who get fired for performance issues DO qualify for unemployment benefits in Washington. Don't let fear keep you from filing. You earned those benefits by working and paying into the system.
Good luck with your claim! Just remember to file your weekly claims even during adjudication, or you'll lose those weeks permanently. Washington ESD doesn't make exceptions for missed weeks.
Once the protest period ends and Washington ESD starts their investigation, you'll usually hear something within 1-2 weeks. They're pretty good about keeping cases moving once they start the fact-finding process.
just remember that even if the protest delays your first payment, you're still building weeks of eligibility. once approved you'll get a lump sum for all the back weeks you filed for
Update: I filed my claim right after reading this thread and got confirmation that it's been submitted. Feeling much better now that I didn't wait any longer. Thanks everyone for the advice!
This was super helpful. I'm sharing this thread with my friend who just got laid off yesterday. She was planning to wait until next week to file but now she knows better!
One more thing - if you're getting severance pay or vacation payout, that might affect when you can start collecting benefits. Washington ESD considers some types of separation pay as wages, which could delay your eligibility.
The whole process is honestly overwhelming at first but once you get into the routine of filing weekly claims it becomes pretty straightforward. The hardest part is dealing with any issues that come up and trying to reach someone at Washington ESD when you need help.
That seems to be the common theme - hard to reach anyone when you have questions. I'll definitely look into that Claimyr service if I run into problems.

Bottom line - file your initial claim ASAP, register with WorkSource, file weekly claims religiously, do your job search activities, and keep detailed records of everything. It's not that complicated once you get into the routine.

•You got this! The first few weeks are the hardest while you're learning the system, but it gets easier. Good luck with your job search too.

One last thing - if you run into issues getting through to Washington ESD by phone, that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier really does work. I was skeptical at first but it saved me so much time and frustration trying to get answers about my claim.

•I'll keep that in mind if I run into problems. Hopefully the online system will be enough for now.

•Yeah, try the online resources first, but if you need to actually talk to someone, that's definitely the way to go instead of spending days trying to get through on your own.
