What does waiting period mean for unemployment - Washington ESD confusion
I just got approved for my Washington ESD unemployment claim but there's something called a 'waiting period' mentioned in my determination letter. Nobody explained what this actually means or how long it lasts. Does this mean I can't get paid for a certain amount of time even though my claim was approved? I'm really confused about this whole process and need to understand what I should expect. Has anyone else dealt with this waiting period thing?

Yeah the waiting period is basically unpaid time at the start of your claim. In Washington it's one week that you have to serve before getting benefits.

•So I still have to file weekly claims during this waiting period even though I won't get paid?

Savanna Franklin
•Yes exactly, you still need to file your weekly claims to keep everything active

The waiting period in Washington state is one week where you meet all the requirements but don't receive payment. Think of it as serving your time before benefits kick in. You still need to complete your job search activities and file your weekly claim during this period.

•This is so dumb though, like why make people wait when they already qualified??

•It's been a federal requirement for decades, most states have it. Washington ESD doesn't set that rule.

I had the same confusion when I first filed! Spent forever trying to get through to Washington ESD to ask about it. Finally found this service called Claimyr that actually got me connected to an agent in like 10 minutes. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's even a demo video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ. The agent explained the waiting period really clearly.

•Wait that actually worked for you? I've been trying to call for days and just get busy signals

•Yeah it was honestly a relief after trying the regular number so many times. Worth checking out if you need to talk to someone

•How much does that cost though? I'm already broke waiting for unemployment

The waiting period applies to your first week of eligibility, not necessarily your first week of filing. So if you file on a Tuesday, that partial week might not count as your waiting period week - it would be the first full week you're eligible.

•This is getting more confusing. How do I know which week is actually my waiting period week?

•Check your claim summary in your Washington ESD account, it should show which benefit week is marked as your waiting period

ugh I remember being so confused about this too! I thought there was an error with my claim when I didn't get paid the first week

•Right?? Nobody explains this stuff clearly anywhere

One important thing - you can't 'skip' the waiting period by not filing that week. You have to serve it eventually, so better to get it over with right away rather than having gaps in your claim.

•What happens if you don't file during the waiting period week?

•Your claim could become inactive and you'd have to reopen it, which creates delays and potential issues

This whole system is designed to screw people over I swear. Like we're already stressed about losing our jobs and then they make us jump through hoops

•I get the frustration but the waiting period has been around since the 1930s, it's not a new thing to hurt people

•doesn't make it any less stupid though

Just to be clear for OP - during your waiting period week you still need to do your 3 job contacts and keep track of them in WorkSourceWA. The requirements don't change just because you're not getting paid that week.

•Got it, so basically everything is the same except no payment for that one week

•Exactly right

Also want to mention that Claimyr thing again since it really helped me understand all this stuff. The Washington ESD agent I talked to through their service was way more patient than I expected and answered like 5 different questions I had about my claim.

•Did you have to give them your social security number or anything like that?

Alice Pierce
•Nah they don't ask for personal info, they just help you get through to the actual Washington ESD phone system

wait so if I already filed 2 weeks ago and got paid, does that mean my waiting period is over?

Juan Moreno
•If you got paid then yes, you already served your waiting period. It's only one week total for your entire benefit year

Quick clarification since there seems to be some confusion in this thread - the waiting period is specifically for regular UI benefits. If you're on standby status through your employer, different rules apply and you typically don't have a waiting period.

•What's standby status? Is that different from regular unemployment?

Ivanna St. Pierre
•Standby is when your employer temporarily lays you off but expects to call you back within a specific timeframe. You don't have to do job search activities

I'm dealing with this right now too and it's so stressful not getting that first payment when you're expecting it

•hang in there, once you get through the waiting period the payments come regularly as long as you keep filing

Pro tip: use the waiting period week to get familiar with the weekly claim filing process and WorkSourceWA job search logging. Better to figure out any technical issues when you're not depending on the payment coming through.

•That's actually really good advice, I'll make sure to practice with the WorkSourceWA system

Does the waiting period count toward your total weeks of benefits or is it extra?
0 coins
Juan Moreno
•It counts toward your total weeks. So if you have 26 weeks of benefits available, the waiting period is one of those 26 weeks

•ok good to know, thanks

I used that Claimyr service too after seeing it mentioned here. Really did help me get through to Washington ESD when I was having issues with my claim getting stuck in adjudication. Way better than spending hours calling the regular number.

•Seems like a lot of people have had success with it, might be worth trying

just remember that even during the waiting period if you work and earn money you still need to report it on your weekly claim

Sergio Neal
•Good point, I'll make sure to report any work even during that unpaid week

Still think this whole waiting period thing is bureaucratic nonsense but at least now I understand what it means

•yeah it's annoying but at least it's only one week and then you're good for the rest of your claim

For anyone reading this later - make sure you file your weekly claim ON TIME during the waiting period week. Missing that deadline can mess up your whole claim timing.

Sergio Neal
•When exactly is the deadline for filing weekly claims?
0 coins
Raul Neal
•You need to file by midnight on the Saturday that ends your claim week. So if your week runs Sunday-Saturday, file by Saturday midnight

Thanks everyone for explaining this! I feel way less confused about the waiting period now. Going to file my weekly claim this weekend and just accept that first week won't have payment.

•You've got this! Once you get through that first week everything becomes much more routine

Savanna Franklin
•Exactly, the hardest part is just understanding how it all works at the beginning
