How long is waiting period for Washington ESD unemployment benefits?

Just filed my unemployment claim with Washington ESD yesterday and I'm trying to figure out when I can expect my first payment. I've heard there's some kind of waiting period but I can't find clear info on their website. Does anyone know how long the waiting period is for regular UI benefits? I'm worried about covering my rent next month if it takes too long.

There's typically a one-week waiting period for Washington ESD unemployment benefits. This means you won't get paid for your first week of unemployment, but you still need to file that weekly claim. After that, if everything goes smoothly with your claim, you should start receiving payments.

So I need to file for that first week even though I won't get paid for it? That's confusing but thanks for clarifying.

Yeah it's weird but you have to file every week including the waiting week or you could mess up your whole claim

The waiting period is one week, but don't expect your first payment exactly one week later. There's usually processing time on top of that. My first payment took about 2-3 weeks total from when I filed my initial claim.

2-3 weeks total? That's longer than I hoped. Did you have any issues with your claim or was that normal processing?

0 coins

That was normal processing time. No issues with my claim, just takes time for everything to get approved and set up in their system.

I've been trying to get through to Washington ESD for days to ask about my waiting period status but their phone lines are impossible. Has anyone found a way to actually talk to someone there recently?

I had the same problem until I found Claimyr. It's a service that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents by phone. Saved me hours of calling and getting hung up on. Check out claimyr.com - they even have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works.

Try calling right at 8am when they open. Sometimes you can get through on the first try.

waiting period sucks but its only one week. make sure you keep filing every week or they'll close your claim and you'll have to start over

Good reminder, I'll make sure to file every Sunday. When do the weekly claims usually become available?

0 coins

Weekly claims are available starting Sunday morning for the previous week. You have until Saturday night to file but don't wait that long.

The waiting period is just Washington ESD's way of making sure you're really unemployed and not gaming the system. One week isn't that bad compared to some other states.

Still feels like punishment when you're already stressed about money though

I get that, but imagine if there was no waiting period - people might file claims every time they had a bad day at work

Make sure you're doing your job search during the waiting period too. Washington ESD requires 3 job search activities per week and they can audit your job search log at any time.

Job search activities? What counts as an activity? I've been applying to jobs but I don't know if I'm tracking it right.

Job applications, networking events, job fairs, career workshops, even creating profiles on job sites can count. Keep detailed records with dates, company names, and what you did.

Don't forget you can use WorkSourceWA to track your job search activities. It integrates with your unemployment claim.

I'm in week 3 of my claim and still haven't received anything. Is this normal or should I be worried? I thought it was just supposed to be a one week waiting period.

0 coins

That sounds like your claim might be in adjudication. Check your account for any pending issues or requests for information.

How do I check for pending issues? I log into my account but it just shows my weekly claims.

Look for an 'Issues and Determinations' section or anything that says 'Pending' next to your claim status. If there's an adjudication issue, it can take weeks or even months to resolve.

The one week waiting period only applies if your claim gets approved without any issues. If they have to investigate anything about your separation from work, the whole thing gets delayed.

What kind of things would trigger an investigation? I was laid off due to budget cuts, seems pretty straightforward.

Layoffs are usually pretty clear cut. Issues come up more with quits, terminations, or if there's any question about your work history or wages.

Pro tip: even during your waiting week, make sure you answer all the weekly claim questions correctly. If you mess up and say you worked when you didn't or vice versa, it can trigger a review that delays everything.

This is so important! I accidentally answered one question wrong on my first weekly claim and it took an extra 2 weeks to get it sorted out.

The questions are confusing though. Like when it asks if I'm able and available to work - I assume I should say yes even during the waiting period?

Ethan Taylor

•

Yes, you should answer that you're able and available to work. The waiting period doesn't change your job search requirements or availability.

I used Claimyr last month when I was confused about my waiting period and claim status. The Washington ESD agent explained everything clearly and I got my first payment the following week. Definitely worth it if you're stuck.

How much does something like that cost though? I'm already tight on money waiting for benefits.

It's worth checking out their site to see current options. For me, getting actual answers was better than weeks of uncertainty and stress.

Just remember that the waiting period week still counts toward your total benefit year. You don't get extra weeks added to the end to make up for it.

0 coins

GalacticGuru

•

So if I'm eligible for 26 weeks of benefits, I only get paid for 25 weeks because of the waiting period?

0 coins

QuantumQuasar

•

Exactly. The waiting week is part of your 26 weeks, you just don't get paid for that first week.

0 coins

That seems really unfair when you think about it. You're unemployed for 26 weeks but only get paid for 25.

If anyone is still having trouble reaching Washington ESD about waiting periods or claim status, I had success with that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. Got connected to an agent in about 20 minutes instead of spending all day calling.

Did they help you understand the waiting period better or just general claim stuff?

0 coins

Jamal Wilson

•

Both actually. The agent walked me through exactly where I was in the process and when to expect my first payment. Much clearer than trying to figure it out from the website.

For what it's worth, my waiting period was actually longer than expected because I filed my claim on a holiday weekend. The processing doesn't start until the next business day, so timing matters.

GalacticGuru

•

Good point, I filed on a Tuesday so hopefully that helps with timing.

0 coins

Amara Nnamani

•

Yeah definitely file early in the week if you can. Weekend filings always seem to take longer to process.

0 coins

The waiting period is annoying but just focus on your job search during that week. By the time your first payment comes through, you'll hopefully already have some good leads or even interviews lined up.

GalacticGuru

That's a good way to look at it. I guess I should use this time productively instead of just worrying about when the money will come.

NebulaNinja

Exactly! Plus keeping busy with job searching makes the waiting time go by faster.
