Washington ESD waiting period week for unemployment - how does it work?
I just got approved for unemployment benefits after my adjudication finally cleared, but Washington ESD is telling me I have to serve a waiting period week. What exactly does this mean? Do I still need to file my weekly claim for that week? And when will I actually start getting paid? I'm really confused about how this whole waiting period thing works with Washington ESD.

The waiting period week is basically one week where you meet all the requirements but don't get paid. You still have to file your weekly claim, do your job search activities, and be available for work. It's like a free week you give to Washington ESD before your benefits kick in.

•So I have to do everything the same but just don't get money for that one week? That seems harsh when I'm already struggling financially.

•Yeah exactly. It's annoying but that's how the system works. Make sure you still file that weekly claim though or it can mess up your whole benefit year.

The waiting period week is required by Washington state law for most unemployment claims. You serve it during your first payable week, which means the first week you're eligible and available for work. You won't receive payment for that week, but it counts toward establishing your claim. Keep filing your weekly claims as normal - this is crucial for maintaining your claim status.

•Wait, so does everyone have to do a waiting week? I thought I read somewhere that some people don't have to serve one.

•Most people do, but there are some exceptions. If you're on standby status or in certain training programs, you might not have a waiting week. Also, if you had a previous claim in the same benefit year, you might not need to serve another one.

I went through this same thing last year and it was so confusing! I actually called Washington ESD to make sure I understood it right because I was worried about messing something up. If you're having trouble getting through to them, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get connected to an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•How much does something like that cost? I'm already broke waiting for my benefits to start.

•It was worth it for me because I was so stressed about doing everything right. The peace of mind of talking to a real person at Washington ESD was huge.

•I might look into that. I've been trying to call for days and keep getting disconnected.

ugh the waiting week is such BS! like we're not already struggling enough and they make us wait even longer for money. i had to borrow from family just to make it through that first week

•I feel you! It's like they're punishing people for losing their jobs. The whole system is set up to make it as hard as possible.

•I get the frustration but the waiting week has been around forever. It's supposed to make sure people are really unemployed and not just taking a quick break from work.

Just to clarify for everyone - you absolutely MUST file your weekly claim for the waiting period week. I see people skip it thinking they won't get paid anyway, but that can disqualify you from your entire claim. File every single week, even the waiting week.

•This is super important! I almost made this mistake when I first filed. The Washington ESD website isn't super clear about this.

•Good to know! I definitely won't skip filing then. Better safe than sorry with Washington ESD.

The waiting period week will show up on your payment history as $0 but it still counts as a week in your benefit year. So if you qualify for 26 weeks of benefits, you'll get paid for 25 weeks because one week is the waiting period.

•Wait, so we lose a whole week of benefits permanently? That doesn't seem fair.

StarStrider
•That's correct. The waiting week essentially reduces your total benefit entitlement by one week. It's been a policy debate for years.

•Some states have gotten rid of the waiting week but Washington still has it. Hopefully they'll change it someday.

I remember being so confused about this too. What helped me was logging into my SecureAccess Washington account and looking at the payment schedule. It clearly shows which week is your waiting period week so you know exactly when to expect your first payment.

•That's a good tip! I'll check my account after I file my first weekly claim.

•Yeah the SAW portal is actually pretty helpful once you figure out where everything is. Way better than trying to call Washington ESD.

Quick question - if I start working part-time during my waiting period week, does that reset everything? I'm scared to take any work because I don't want to mess up my claim.

•Working part-time during your waiting week won't reset your claim, but you need to report those earnings on your weekly claim. Depending on how much you earn, it might affect when you serve your waiting week.

•So I should still take the work if it's offered? I just report it honestly on my weekly claim?

Sean Flanagan
•Yes, always report your earnings honestly. Washington ESD has ways to verify income, and unreported earnings can result in overpayment issues later.

For anyone still struggling to get through to Washington ESD about waiting week questions, I had good luck with Claimyr. It's a service that helps you get connected to actual agents instead of sitting on hold forever. Saved me hours of frustration.

•I might try that. I've been calling for three days straight and haven't gotten through once.

•Same here! The phone system at Washington ESD is impossible. Either busy signal or it hangs up on you.

The waiting week is basically Washington state's way of making sure you're not gaming the system. It's annoying but just think of it as one week closer to getting your regular payments. Hang in there!

•We've all been there. The first few weeks of unemployment are the hardest, but it gets easier once you understand the system.

Just want to add that if you're on standby with your employer, you might not have to serve a waiting week. Standby is different from regular unemployment. Check with Washington ESD if you think this applies to you.

•What exactly is standby status? I keep seeing people mention it but I don't understand what it means.

•Standby is when your employer temporarily lays you off but expects to call you back within a specific timeframe. You don't have to do job search activities and the waiting week rules are different.

•That sounds way better than regular unemployment! Wish my company had done that instead of just laying us all off permanently.

Pro tip: keep track of your job search activities even during your waiting week. You need to be able and available for work, which includes actively looking for jobs. Washington ESD can audit your job search log at any time.

•How many job contacts do we need per week? I've heard different numbers from different people.

•It's usually 3 job search activities per week, but it can vary based on your situation. Check your eligibility requirements in your Washington ESD account.

I served my waiting week back in March and got my first payment the following week. The key is just to be patient and make sure you file every single weekly claim on time. Don't skip any weeks!

•Good to hear from someone who's been through it recently. Were there any other surprises I should know about?

•Not really, just make sure you understand the job search requirements and report any income honestly. The system works pretty smoothly once you get the hang of it.

If anyone is still having trouble reaching Washington ESD, I used Claimyr a few weeks ago and it worked great. You can check out their demo video to see how it works before deciding. Made my life so much easier than trying to call during business hours.
