Washington ESD unemployment rate low but still can't find work - what am I missing?
Everyone keeps saying unemployment is at a low right now but I've been filing weekly claims for 8 weeks and still haven't found anything. I'm doing my job search activities through WorkSource and applying to everything I can find but most places aren't even responding. My adjudication finally cleared last month so I know my benefits are good. Is anyone else struggling to find work even though the unemployment rate is supposedly low? What am I doing wrong?

The unemployment rate being low doesn't mean finding a job is easy - it just means fewer people are actively claiming benefits. Job market is still competitive especially in certain fields. What type of work are you looking for?

•I'm looking for administrative/office work. I have 5 years experience but seems like every posting wants 10+ years or specialized software I don't know.

•That's exactly the issue - employers got picky during the pandemic and haven't relaxed their requirements yet. Consider temp agencies or contract work to get your foot in the door.

•Right?? I feel like I'm going crazy hearing about this great job market while I can't even get interviews.

•The 'low unemployment' includes gig work and part-time jobs that don't pay enough to live on. Real full-time positions with benefits are still scarce.

I was struggling with the same thing until I started using Claimyr to actually talk to Washington ESD agents about job search strategies. Turns out I wasn't documenting my search activities correctly and they had some resources I didn't know about. Check out claimyr.com - there's a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Wait what is Claimyr? I've never heard of that before.

•It's a service that helps you get through to Washington ESD phone agents without waiting on hold for hours. I used it to talk to someone about my job search requirements and they pointed me to some WorkSource programs I wasn't using.

•Is that legitimate? I'm always nervous about third-party services when it comes to my unemployment claim.

The unemployment rate being low is actually BAD for job seekers in some ways. Employers think they can be super picky because 'everyone else is finding work' so why can't you?

•This is so true! I had an interview where they literally said 'with unemployment so low we can afford to wait for the perfect candidate.

Yuki Tanaka
•Exactly! They act like we should be grateful for any crumb they throw us while demanding PhD requirements for entry level positions.

Are you meeting your three job search activities per week? Washington ESD is getting stricter about documentation. Make sure you're logging everything in your WorkSource account properly.

Luca Conti
•Yes I'm doing way more than three per week. I'm applying to like 10-15 jobs weekly and attending virtual job fairs. Still nothing.

•That's good you're exceeding the requirement. Have you tried contacting employers directly after applying? Sometimes following up makes the difference.

low unemployment just means people gave up looking or took terrible jobs they hate

•There's some truth to that. Labor force participation is still below pre-pandemic levels in some demographics.

•I wonder if I should just take any job even if it's way below what I was making before. But then I'd lose my unemployment benefits.

I've been hearing about this Claimyr thing too. My sister used it last month when her claim got stuck in adjudication and she said it worked great. Might be worth trying if you need to talk to Washington ESD about your job search strategy.

•I'm getting desperate enough to try anything. How much does it cost?
0 coins
Ethan Davis
•I don't know the exact cost but my sister said it was worth it to avoid spending entire days trying to get through on the phone. She got connected to an agent in like 20 minutes.

The job market is weird right now. Statistics say it's great but experience says otherwise. I think employers are posting fake jobs to look like they're hiring when they're not.

•YES this is totally happening! I applied to the same job posting three times over two months and never heard back. It's still posted.

•Some companies are required to post jobs externally even when they're promoting internally. It's frustrating but legal.

Have you considered expanding your search outside your immediate area? Remote work is still common and might open up more opportunities.
0 coins
Luca Conti
•I've been applying to remote jobs too but those seem even more competitive. Hundreds of applications for every posting.

Nia Johnson
•True, but at least you're not limited by geography. Keep trying both local and remote - something will stick eventually.

Been there! Took me 4 months to find something decent even with 'low unemployment.' Don't give up and keep documenting everything for Washington ESD.

Luca Conti
•Thanks for the encouragement. Some days I feel like I'm never going to find anything.

•I felt the same way. The right job will come along - just keep at it and don't let the statistics make you feel worse about your situation.

maybe we should start a support group for people who cant find work during this 'amazing' job market lol

•I'm in! At least we'd have people who understand what we're going through.

•That's actually not a bad idea. It's isolating when everyone acts like jobs are everywhere.

Update on the Claimyr thing - I actually got a job lead from the Washington ESD agent I talked to through their service. She connected me with a WorkSource specialist who had employers specifically looking for people with my background. Sometimes you just need to talk to the right person.

Luca Conti
•Wow that's awesome! I'm definitely going to look into it now. What kind of lead did you get?

Aisha Abdullah
•It was for a temp-to-perm administrative position that wasn't posted publicly yet. The WorkSource specialist had direct contact with the hiring manager.

Don't let the low unemployment statistics discourage you. Those numbers don't tell the whole story about job quality or availability in specific fields.
0 coins
Luca Conti
•That's what I keep trying to tell myself. Thanks for the reminder.

Mateo Lopez
•Absolutely right. Focus on your own search and don't worry about macro statistics that don't reflect your individual situation.

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS RIGGED! Low unemployment my ass - it's all fake numbers to make politicians look good while we struggle to find decent work!

Nia Johnson
•I understand the frustration but the numbers aren't fake - they just don't capture the full picture of job market quality.

•Whatever helps you sleep at night. I know what I'm experiencing and it doesn't match their rosy statistics.

Have you tried networking events or professional associations in your field? Sometimes the best opportunities aren't posted online.
0 coins
Luca Conti
•I've been to a few virtual networking events but they seem to be mostly other job seekers. Haven't found any actual employers.
0 coins
Jamal Washington
•Keep trying different events. Industry-specific ones tend to have more actual hiring managers than general job fairs.

Just saw another article about 'record low unemployment' and wanted to throw my laptop across the room. These journalists need to try job searching themselves.

Keep your head up! I found my current job after 3 months of searching during this supposedly great job market. It's not you - it really is harder than the statistics suggest.
0 coins
Luca Conti
•Thank you! It helps to hear from someone who actually found something. What finally worked for you?

Mei Wong
•Honestly it was pure luck - I applied to a company the day they posted the job and got in before hundreds of other applications. Timing is everything.

One more suggestion - make sure your WorkSource profile is completely filled out and updated. Some employers search their database directly for candidates.
0 coins
Luca Conti
•I thought I had everything filled out but I'll double check. Thanks for the tip!

Mateo Lopez
•Also upload your resume there if you haven't already. The more complete your profile, the better chance of being found.

anyone else notice how all the job postings want you to be passionate about filing insurance claims or whatever boring thing they do?
0 coins
Carmen Ortiz
•OMG yes! Like I'm passionate about paying my rent, not your company's mission statement about revolutionizing paper clips.
0 coins
Luca Conti
•I hate those applications that ask why you're passionate about working for them. Because I need money to live, Karen!

Final thought - don't let the low unemployment narrative make you feel like you're failing. The job market is still challenging for many people despite what the headlines say. Keep doing what you're doing and something will break your way soon.

•Thanks everyone for all the advice and support. At least now I know I'm not crazy for struggling in this 'amazing' job market. Going to keep pushing forward and maybe try that Claimyr thing to talk to Washington ESD about other resources.
