Why is unemployment so low right now - worried about my Washington ESD claim approval

I'm really confused about something and hope someone can help. I keep hearing that unemployment rates are super low right now, like historically low. But I just lost my job at a manufacturing plant in Tacoma last month and I'm genuinely struggling to find work. I filed my Washington ESD claim and I'm worried they're going to deny it or think I'm not trying hard enough because everyone says jobs are everywhere. Is the low unemployment rate going to make it harder for my claim to get approved? I've been doing my job searches through WorkSource and applying to everything I can find but most places either don't respond or say they're not hiring despite their job postings. Am I missing something here?

The unemployment rate being low doesn't affect your Washington ESD claim approval at all. Your eligibility is based on your work history, how you lost your job, and whether you're able and available for work. The state unemployment rate is just a statistical measure - it has nothing to do with individual claim decisions.

That's actually really reassuring, thank you. I was worried they'd think I was lying about not finding work.

Yeah this is right, Washington ESD doesn't care about overall unemployment rates when processing your claim. They only care about your specific situation.

Low unemployment rates can actually make it harder to find work in some industries even though it sounds backwards. Companies get pickier when they have more applicants, and some of those job postings might be fake or already filled internally.

That actually makes a lot of sense. I've applied to probably 40 jobs and heard back from maybe 5.

This is so true! I've been seeing the same job postings up for months. Makes you wonder if they're even real.

I had the same worry when I filed my claim last year. The adjudication process took forever and I kept thinking they were being extra strict because of the job market. Turns out they were just backed up with cases. Have you been able to get through to anyone at Washington ESD to check on your claim status?

No I haven't been able to get through at all! The phone lines are always busy or I get disconnected after waiting for hours.

I actually found this service called Claimyr that helped me get through to Washington ESD when I couldn't reach them myself. They have some kind of system that calls for you and connects you when an agent picks up. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ if you want to see how it works. Saved me tons of time and frustration.

That sounds almost too good to be true but I'm desperate at this point. Did it actually work for you?

0 coins

Yeah it did! I was skeptical too but I got connected within like 20 minutes when I'd been trying for weeks on my own. The website is claimyr.com if you want to check it out.

Manufacturing jobs are tough right now even with 'low unemployment.' A lot of plants are automating or moving operations. You might need to look outside your usual industry which sucks but that's the reality.

Yeah I'm starting to realize that. It's scary though because manufacturing is all I know.

WorkSource actually has retraining programs that might help you transition to a different field. Worth looking into while you're collecting benefits.

Low unemployment doesn't mean much when wages are still garbage and most of these jobs are part-time with no benefits. The statistics are misleading IMO.

This!! So many of these jobs are gig work or temp positions that barely pay the bills.

While that may be true for some sectors, it doesn't change how Washington ESD processes unemployment claims. They're focused on whether you meet the eligibility requirements, not broader economic trends.

I've been on unemployment for 2 months now and doing my weekly claims religiously. The job search requirement is still 3 jobs per week regardless of the unemployment rate. Just make sure you're documenting everything properly in case they audit your job search log.

Good point about documentation. I've been keeping screenshots of all my applications just in case.

Smart move. I got audited last year and they wanted to see proof of every single job contact I'd made.

The unemployment rate is calculated weird anyway. It doesn't include people who gave up looking or are underemployed. Don't let those numbers make you feel bad about needing benefits.

Thank you for saying that. I was feeling pretty awful about the whole situation.

You paid into the system through your taxes, you earned these benefits. Don't feel guilty about using them.

Are you applying for jobs outside of Tacoma? Sometimes you have to expand your search radius even if it means a longer commute.

Chris King

•

I've been mostly focusing on Pierce County but you're right, I should probably look at Seattle area too.

0 coins

Just remember that Washington ESD considers reasonable commute distance when determining if you're available for work. Too far and they might question your availability.

I was in a similar situation and ended up using that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. Got through to Washington ESD same day and was able to get an update on my adjudication status. Definitely worth trying if you're stuck.

I'm definitely going to try it. The not knowing what's happening with my claim is driving me crazy.

Low unemployment rates actually make Washington ESD more strict about job search requirements sometimes. They expect you to find work faster when there are supposedly more jobs available.

0 coins

Rachel Clark

•

This isn't accurate. Washington ESD job search requirements are set by law and don't change based on unemployment rates. It's still 3 job contacts per week regardless of market conditions.

Alexis Renard

•

Maybe not officially but I swear they were more aggressive about checking my job searches when I was on UI last year.

Don't overthink it. As long as you're meeting the job search requirements and filing your weekly claims on time, the unemployment rate has nothing to do with your benefits. Focus on finding work that's a good fit instead of just applying everywhere.

You're probably right. I've been so anxious about everything that I'm second-guessing myself constantly.

The 'low unemployment' thing is mostly political talking points anyway. Real people are still struggling to find decent work that pays enough to live on. Your claim is valid regardless of what the statistics say.

0 coins

Exactly this. Those numbers don't reflect the reality of trying to find a job that actually supports you and your family.

Thanks everyone for the reality check. I was really spiraling about this and you've all helped put things in perspective.

Just had a thought - are you making sure to accept any suitable work offers? Washington ESD can deny benefits if they think you're being too picky about jobs, especially when unemployment is low.

0 coins

Rachel Clark

•

The definition of 'suitable work' is pretty specific and includes factors like wages, working conditions, and your skills/experience. You're not required to take just any job, regardless of unemployment rates.

Good to know. I haven't actually gotten any offers yet so it's not an issue at the moment.

I'd definitely recommend trying that Claimyr thing to get through to Washington ESD. I used it a few weeks ago when my weekly claim got stuck and couldn't file online. Saved me from missing a week of benefits while trying to get through on the phone.

Okay that settles it, I'm definitely going to try Claimyr. Three people recommending it can't be wrong.
