How high is unemployment in Washington right now - worried about my chances

I just got laid off from my manufacturing job last week and I'm trying to figure out if it's even worth filing for Washington ESD benefits right now. Everyone keeps talking about how unemployment rates are changing but I can't find clear info about what that means for actually getting approved. Is Washington ESD still processing claims quickly or are they backed up because of high unemployment? I'm really stressed about this whole process and don't know what to expect.

The unemployment rate and your ability to get benefits are two different things. If you were laid off and meet the work requirements, you should definitely file your claim regardless of the current rate. Washington ESD processes claims based on your individual eligibility, not on how many other people are filing.

That makes sense, I guess I was overthinking it. Should I file online or try calling them?

0 coins

Definitely file online at esd.wa.gov first. It's much faster than trying to get through on the phone.

I filed my claim about 3 weeks ago and it's been pretty smooth so far. My weekly claims are getting paid on time. The system seems to be working better than it was during the pandemic.

0 coins

That's reassuring! How long did it take for your first payment to come through?

0 coins

About 2 weeks after I filed, which is pretty normal from what I understand.

I've been trying to get through to Washington ESD for days about my adjudication issue and can't reach anyone. If you need to actually talk to someone, good luck with that. The phone system is still terrible.

Have you tried using Claimyr? I discovered it last month when I was having the same problem. It's a service that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents - you can check it out at claimyr.com. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

0 coins

Never heard of that, is it legit? I'm desperate at this point.

0 coins

Yeah it worked for me. I was able to actually talk to someone about my claim status instead of getting hung up on constantly.

The current unemployment rate doesn't really affect your individual claim processing. What matters is whether you meet the eligibility requirements - like having enough work history and being separated from your job through no fault of your own. Manufacturing layoffs usually qualify as long as you weren't fired for misconduct.

0 coins

It was definitely a layoff, they closed our whole department. I worked there for 3 years so I should have enough work history.

0 coins

Sounds like you should be fine then. Make sure you have your employment dates and wage information ready when you file.

0 coins

honestly the rates go up and down but if you need benefits just file, worrying about statistics wont help pay your bills

0 coins

You're right, I need to just do it and stop overthinking everything.

0 coins

One thing to keep in mind is that you'll need to start looking for work right away and keep a job search log. Washington ESD requires you to make at least 3 job search contacts per week and be ready to provide documentation if they ask for it.

0 coins

Do I need to register with WorkSource too or is that separate?

0 coins

You'll need to register with WorkSourceWA within a certain timeframe after filing. They'll give you specific instructions in your eligibility determination.

0 coins

I've been on unemployment twice in the past 5 years and the rate never mattered for my individual claim. What matters is having your paperwork ready and being honest about your work search efforts.

0 coins

Good point about being honest. I definitely don't want to mess anything up by not following the rules.

0 coins

Exactly. Keep good records of everything and you'll be fine.

0 coins

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS A JOKE ANYWAY! They make you jump through hoops while you're already stressed about losing your job. But yeah file anyway because you paid into it.

0 coins

I understand the frustration but the system does work if you follow the requirements. It's there to help people who are between jobs.

0 coins

Easy for you to say if you haven't spent weeks trying to get through to them about a simple question!

0 coins

Just file ASAP because there's a waiting week and you want to get the process started. Even if unemployment is high or low, your benefits are based on your own work history and wages from the past year or so.

0 coins

What's the waiting week exactly?

0 coins

It's the first week of your claim period where you don't get paid, but you still need to file your weekly claim for that week.

Update on my situation - I finally got through to Washington ESD using that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. Took about 20 minutes but I actually talked to a real person who helped resolve my adjudication issue. Definitely worth trying if you're stuck.

0 coins

Glad it worked for you! It's so much better than sitting on hold for hours just to get disconnected.

0 coins

Good to know this is an option if I run into problems with my claim.

0 coins

i remember when unemployment was way higher a few years back and claims were taking forever but now its pretty normal timing from what i hear

0 coins

Yeah the pandemic really messed things up for a while but they seem to have gotten back to normal processing times.

0 coins

One more thing - make sure you understand the difference between the state unemployment rate (which is a statistic) and your individual claim eligibility. The rate measures how many people are actively looking for work versus how many have jobs. Your claim approval depends on your specific work history and reason for separation.

0 coins

That clarifies a lot actually. I was confusing the two things in my head.

0 coins

It's a common confusion. Focus on your own situation and you'll be fine.

0 coins

File your claim today if you can. The sooner you start the process the sooner you might get benefits. Don't wait around analyzing unemployment statistics.

0 coins

You're absolutely right. I'm going to file online right after I finish reading these responses.

0 coins

Also remember that your benefit amount is calculated based on your past wages, not on current unemployment rates. So even if a lot of people are filing claims, it doesn't affect how much you'll get if approved.

0 coins

That's good to know. I was wondering if high unemployment meant lower benefit amounts somehow.

0 coins

Nope, it's all based on your individual wage history from your base period.

0 coins

been there done that, just file the claim and deal with whatever comes up later, no point in worrying about stuff you cant control

0 coins

True, I tend to overthink things when I'm stressed.

0 coins

Final advice - gather your employment information (dates, employer details, reason for separation) before you start the online application. Having everything ready will make the process much smoother. And remember, you can always come back here if you run into specific issues with your claim.

0 coins

Thank you everyone for all the helpful advice! I feel much better about filing now.

0 coins

You're welcome! Good luck with your claim.

0 coins

One last thing - if you do need to contact Washington ESD by phone later and can't get through the regular way, that Claimyr service people mentioned really does work. I used it when I had questions about my weekly claim and it saved me hours of frustration.

0 coins

I'll definitely keep that in mind. Hopefully I won't need it but good to know it's there.

0 coins

Seriously, wish I had known about it sooner. Would have saved me so much stress.

0 coins

same boat as you last month, filed online and got approved pretty quickly despite all my worrying about unemployment rates and stuff

0 coins

That's exactly what I needed to hear. Going to file right now!
