Washington ESD unemployment claim shows $0 benefit amount - what does this mean?
I just checked my Washington ESD account online and my weekly benefit amount shows $0. I filed my initial claim two weeks ago and thought everything went through okay. My account doesn't show any obvious red flags or missing information. Is this normal during processing or does it mean my claim was denied? I'm really confused because I worked full-time for over a year before getting laid off. Has anyone else seen their claim show $0 like this?

This happened to me too when I first filed. Sometimes it takes a few days for Washington ESD to calculate your actual benefit amount based on your wage history.

•How long did it take for your actual amount to show up? I'm getting worried about paying rent next month.

•About a week for me, but that was during a busy period. Keep checking your account daily.

The $0 usually means they're still processing your wage verification with your previous employers. Washington ESD has to confirm your earnings before they can calculate your weekly benefit amount. Check if there's anything in your correspondence section about wage verification issues.

•I don't see any correspondence about wages. Should I be worried that my employer didn't report my wages correctly?

Annabel Kimball
•Not necessarily. The wage matching process is automated but can take time. If there were reporting issues, Washington ESD would send you a notice.

I had this exact same issue last month and it was driving me crazy trying to get through to Washington ESD on the phone. The hold times were ridiculous - I tried calling dozens of times. Finally discovered claimyr.com which helped me get connected to an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. The agent was able to tell me exactly what was holding up my claim calculation.

•What did the agent say was causing the delay? Was it something you could fix?

•In my case, one of my previous employers had a slightly different business name in the system. The agent fixed it right away and my benefit amount showed up the next day.

•Never heard of that service but if it actually works that's amazing. I've been trying to reach Washington ESD for weeks about my own claim issues.

Could also be that your claim is in adjudication. Even if it doesn't explicitly say that, wage verification delays can look like $0 amounts. Did you have any gaps in employment or work for multiple employers in your base period?

•I worked for the same company for 15 months straight until they laid me off. No gaps or anything complicated about my work history.

Charity Cohan
•That should be straightforward then. Probably just the normal processing delay for wage verification.

Washington ESD is SO SLOW with everything. I've been waiting 3 weeks just to get my identity verification processed. The whole system is a mess and they act like we're asking for charity instead of benefits we earned through our paychecks.

•I feel you on this. The bureaucracy is unreal. But hang in there, most claims do get processed eventually.

•Eventually isn't paying my bills though. Some of us don't have savings to fall back on while Washington ESD takes their sweet time.

Another possibility - make sure you didn't accidentally select the wrong claim type when you filed. If you selected PUA or pandemic-related benefits (which are no longer available), that could cause processing issues that show as $0.

•I'm pretty sure I selected regular unemployment benefits. Is there a way to check which type I filed for?

Annabel Kimball
•Check your claim summary page in your Washington ESD account. It should show the claim type at the top.

Just remembered - when mine showed $0, I panicked and called Washington ESD immediately. The automated system actually has an option to check claim status that might give you more info than the website. Try calling the main number and following the prompts.

Maxwell St. Laurent
•I tried that but got stuck in an endless phone tree. Which option did you select to get claim status info?
0 coins
PaulineW
•I think it was option 2 then option 1, but they change the menu sometimes. Just keep pressing numbers until you find claim status.

•At least I'm not the only one! Let me know if your amount shows up - I'll do the same.

Actually, I should mention that when I used Claimyr to reach Washington ESD about my $0 benefit amount, the agent also mentioned that some claims get flagged for manual review even when there's nothing obviously wrong. It's just their system being extra cautious with new claims. The agent was able to see exactly where my claim was in the process.

•How much does that service cost? I'm already broke from being unemployed.

•I'd rather not discuss pricing here, but for me it was worth it to get answers instead of wondering for weeks. You can check their site for current info.

One more thing to check - log into your account and look at your monetary determination letter if it's available. That document will show exactly how Washington ESD calculated your benefits (or why they couldn't). If you don't see one yet, that's probably why you're seeing $0.

Maxwell St. Laurent
•I don't see any monetary determination letter in my documents section. Does that mean they haven't processed my wages yet?
0 coins
Charity Cohan
•Exactly. That letter comes out once they've verified your wages and calculated your benefit amount. Until then, you'll see $0.

This is pretty normal actually. I've helped several friends through the unemployment process and almost everyone sees $0 initially. Washington ESD has to cross-reference your wages with what employers reported, and that takes time.

Maxwell St. Laurent
•That's reassuring to hear. I was starting to think I did something wrong when I filed.

Shelby Bauman
•Nah, you're probably fine. The system just moves slowly. Most people get their determination within 2-3 weeks of filing.

wait what if you worked in multiple states? i worked in oregon for 6 months then moved to washington. could that cause the $0 thing?
0 coins
Annabel Kimball
•Yes, that could definitely cause delays. You might need to file an interstate claim or provide additional wage documentation from Oregon.

Hazel Garcia
•ugh that sounds complicated. do i need to contact oregon too or just washington esd?

I tried that Claimyr thing someone mentioned earlier and it actually worked! Got through to Washington ESD in about 20 minutes instead of spending hours on hold. The agent confirmed my claim was just waiting for wage verification and should be processed this week.

•That's awesome! I might try that if my amount doesn't show up in a few more days. Thanks for the update.

•Really? That seems too good to be true. Washington ESD phone lines are impossible normally.

•I was skeptical too but I was desperate. Definitely beats sitting on hold for hours just to get disconnected.

UPDATE: Mine finally switched from $0 to my actual benefit amount this morning! Took exactly 12 days from when I filed. So there's hope for everyone else waiting.

•That's great news! Did you get any notification that it changed or did you just happen to check?

•No notification, I've just been checking obsessively every day. Also got my monetary determination letter at the same time.

12 days isn't too bad I guess. I'm on day 8 with the $0 showing. At least now I know it's probably normal processing time and not a problem with my claim.

•Same here, this thread has been really helpful for understanding what's going on. Much better than the vague info on the Washington ESD website.

For everyone still waiting - remember that even once your benefit amount shows up, you still need to file your weekly claims on time. Don't wait for everything to be perfect before you start that routine. You can always backdate if needed.

•Good point about the weekly claims. I almost forgot about those while focused on the $0 issue.

•Yeah, it's easy to get tunnel vision on one problem and miss other important deadlines. Keep filing those weekly claims even if your benefit amount isn't showing yet.

My sister had this happen and it turned out Washington ESD needed her to verify her identity before they could process wages. Check if you have any ID.me requirements or identity verification requests in your account.

Maxwell St. Laurent
•I checked and don't see any identity verification requests. Hopefully that means I'm just in the normal wage verification queue.

Nasira Ibanez
•That's probably a good sign then. The identity verification adds extra weeks to the process.

For what it's worth, I've been through this process three times over the years (thanks unstable job market) and the $0 amount during initial processing is completely normal. Washington ESD just doesn't show estimated amounts - it's either calculated or it shows zero.

Maxwell St. Laurent
•Three times? That's rough but I appreciate the perspective from someone with experience. Makes me feel better about the $0.

•Yeah, job security isn't what it used to be. But the good news is Washington ESD's process is pretty predictable once you know what to expect.

Final update from me - got my benefit amount calculated and it was actually higher than I expected based on my previous salary. Sometimes the wait is worth it. For anyone still stressed about reaching Washington ESD, that Claimyr service really did help me get answers faster than traditional calling.

•That's encouraging! I'm going to give it another few days and then might try that service if I'm still seeing $0.

This is such a helpful thread! I'm also seeing $0 on my claim that I filed 6 days ago. Reading everyone's experiences here is way more informative than anything I could find on the official Washington ESD website. It sounds like 1-2 weeks is pretty typical for the wage verification process to complete. I'll try to be patient and keep checking daily. Thanks to everyone who shared their timelines and outcomes - it really helps reduce the anxiety of not knowing what's normal!

•Absolutely agree! This thread has been a lifesaver for understanding what's actually happening with the $0 amounts. The official Washington ESD site is so vague about processing times. It's really reassuring to see that most people here got their benefit amounts calculated within 2-3 weeks. I'm on day 10 myself and was starting to panic, but now I feel like I should just keep waiting a bit longer before taking any action.

I'm in the same boat - filed my claim 5 days ago and seeing that dreaded $0 benefit amount. It's honestly terrifying when you're already stressed about losing your job and then the system shows zero dollars. But reading through all these experiences has been incredibly reassuring! It seems like the 1-3 week timeframe for wage verification is pretty standard. I'm going to try to be patient and keep checking daily rather than driving myself crazy trying to get through on the phone lines. Really appreciate everyone sharing their timelines and outcomes here - this community support means a lot during an already difficult time.
