Washington ESD unemployment benefits and mortgage protection - who offers mortgage unemployment insurance?
Just got laid off from my construction job last week and I'm really worried about keeping up with my mortgage payments while waiting for my Washington ESD unemployment claim to get processed. My adjudication has been pending for 8 days now and I have no idea when I'll see my first payment. Does anyone know who offers mortgage unemployment insurance or if there are any programs that can help bridge the gap? I've got about 6 weeks of savings but after that I'm in trouble. Filed my weekly claim yesterday but still showing $0 in benefits.

Most major lenders offer mortgage protection insurance but you usually have to sign up for it when you get the loan. Check with your mortgage company first - some have hardship programs for unemployment situations. Also make sure you're doing everything right with your Washington ESD claim because delays can happen if there's missing info.

•I'll call my lender tomorrow. Do you know if Washington ESD has any timeline for adjudication? Getting really stressed about this.

•Adjudication can take 2-6 weeks depending on the issue. Usually it's about verifying your work history or separation reason.

Been there man, lost my job in manufacturing 3 months ago. Chase offered me forbearance for 3 months while I sorted out my unemployment. Washington ESD took forever to process mine too - like 4 weeks total. The waiting is brutal but most mortgage companies will work with you if you call before you miss a payment.

•Did you have to provide proof of your unemployment claim to get the forbearance?

•Yeah they wanted my Washington ESD determination letter and proof I was filing weekly claims. Keep all your documentation.

Few options for mortgage protection: 1) Mortgage payment protection insurance (MPPI) - but you need to buy before unemployment. 2) Contact your servicer about COVID-era forbearance programs that might still be available. 3) Look into local housing assistance programs. For Washington ESD specifically, if your adjudication is taking too long, there's actually a service called Claimyr that helps people get through to Washington ESD agents faster. Check out claimyr.com - they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works.

•Thanks for the Claimyr tip! I've been trying to call Washington ESD for days but keep getting busy signals. Will definitely check that out.

•Wait, what exactly is Claimyr? Is it legit? I'm desperate to talk to someone at Washington ESD about my claim status.

•It's a service that helps you get through to unemployment office phone lines. I used it last month when my claim got stuck in adjudication. Much better than redialing for hours.

Check if your state has any emergency rental/mortgage assistance programs too. Some are still funded from federal programs. Also, don't wait too long to contact your mortgage company - they're usually more willing to help if you're proactive about it.

•Good point about being proactive. I'll call them first thing Monday morning.

•This is solid advice. I waited too long when I got laid off and it made everything harder.

MORTGAGE COMPANIES ARE THE WORST during unemployment. They say they'll help but then you're on hold for hours and they want a million documents. At least with Washington ESD you know what you're getting into - bureaucratic nightmare but at least it's predictable lol

•Ugh, not what I wanted to hear but probably realistic. Thanks for the heads up.

•Not all mortgage companies are that bad. Wells Fargo actually helped me out pretty quickly when I showed them my Washington ESD paperwork.

Going back to that Claimyr thing - has anyone actually used it? I'm at my wit's end trying to get through to Washington ESD. My claim has been in adjudication for 3 weeks and I can't get any information about what's holding it up.

•I used it twice - once to check on my adjudication status and once to ask about my job search requirements. Both times I got through to an actual person instead of getting hung up on.

•Just looked at their website and video demo. Seems straightforward enough. Might be worth trying if you're stuck.

•Thanks, going to give it a shot tomorrow. Anything is better than calling 200 times a day and getting nowhere.

For mortgage protection insurance, I think State Farm, Allstate, and a few others offer it but you have to apply when you're employed. After you're already unemployed it's too late. Your best bet is talking to your mortgage servicer about hardship options.

•Yeah, I figured it was too late for insurance. Just hoping my lender will be reasonable about a temporary payment reduction.

•Most will work with you especially if you've been a good customer. Just be honest about your situation.

Construction worker here too - got laid off last winter. Washington ESD unemployment maxes out at $1015/week but that's only if you were making good money. Mine was only $680/week which wasn't even close to covering my mortgage. Had to get a part-time job to make ends meet while looking for full-time work.

•Yeah, I'm expecting around $700/week based on my wages. It'll be tight but should cover basics if I can get my mortgage payment reduced temporarily.

•Make sure you're logging your job searches properly. Washington ESD is strict about the 3 contacts per week requirement.

Just wanted to add - if you do get forbearance from your mortgage company, make sure you understand if it's a deferral or if you'll owe all the missed payments at once later. Some programs are better than others.

Yuki Tanaka
•Good point - I'll make sure to ask about that when I call them.

•This is really important. Some forbearance programs just push all the payments to the end of the loan, others want a lump sum after the forbearance period.

Honestly the whole system is broken. You lose your job through no fault of your own and then have to jump through hoops with Washington ESD, your mortgage company, credit cards, etc. It's like they're designed to make you fail.

•I'm definitely feeling that frustration right now. Everything seems to take forever and you need help immediately.

•The system definitely isn't set up for people who need quick help. But there are good people at Washington ESD if you can actually talk to them.

Update on Claimyr - I tried it today and actually got through to a Washington ESD agent in about 15 minutes. They were able to tell me exactly what documents I needed to upload to complete my adjudication. Way better than sitting on hold for hours!

•That's awesome! I'm definitely going to try it. What kind of documents did they need from you?

•They needed my separation paperwork from my employer and a copy of my ID. Apparently my claim was flagged for identity verification.

•This gives me hope. I've been waiting 3 weeks with no idea what's wrong with my claim.

For anyone dealing with mortgage issues during unemployment - also check with local credit unions. Sometimes they have better hardship programs than big banks. And some areas have emergency assistance funds for mortgage payments.

•I'll look into local programs too. Thanks for the suggestion.

Been following this thread because I'm in a similar situation. Just wanted to say thanks to everyone sharing their experiences. It helps to know you're not alone in dealing with this stuff.

One more thing about mortgage protection - if you have a VA loan, they have specific programs for unemployed veterans. And FHA loans have some special hardship options too. Worth checking if you have either of those loan types.

The Claimyr service sounds interesting but I'm always suspicious of third-party services. How do you know they're legitimate? Are there any risks to using them?

•They don't ask for your personal information like SSN or anything. They just help you get through to the actual Washington ESD phone lines. I was skeptical too but it worked.

•Same here - they don't handle your claim or anything, just get you connected to the real Washington ESD agents. I was worried about scams too but it's legit.

Hope everything works out for you OP. Unemployment is stressful enough without worrying about losing your house too. Keep us posted on how it goes with your mortgage company and Washington ESD.

•Thanks, I'll definitely update the thread once I hear back from my lender and hopefully get my adjudication resolved.
