Washington ESD unemployment amount if I get fired - how much will I receive?

My job has been really unstable lately and I'm worried I might get terminated soon. I've been working full-time making about $55,000 a year for the past 18 months. If I do get fired, does anyone know how much unemployment I'd be eligible for through Washington ESD? I've never filed for UI benefits before and have no idea how they calculate the weekly amount. Also does it matter if I get fired vs laid off in terms of the benefit amount?

The weekly benefit amount depends on your earnings history over the base period, which is typically the first 4 of the last 5 completed calendar quarters before you file. Washington ESD uses a formula based on your highest earning quarter. Maximum weekly benefit is currently $999 but most people get way less than that.

So it's based on quarterly earnings, not just my current salary? That's confusing. How do I figure out what my highest quarter was?

Yeah, you can look at your pay stubs or W-2 to estimate. If you made $55k consistently, you're probably looking at around $13-14k per quarter. The formula is roughly 3.85% of your total base period wages.

Getting fired vs laid off doesn't change the benefit amount - that's calculated the same way. But it DOES affect whether you qualify at all. If you're fired for misconduct, you could be disqualified completely.

What counts as misconduct? I haven't done anything terrible, just some performance issues lately.

0 coins

Performance issues usually aren't misconduct unless it's willful. Things like attendance problems, insubordination, or violating company policies are more likely to cause disqualification.

I went through this exact situation last year. Was making around $50k and got fired for attendance issues. Had to deal with adjudication for weeks trying to prove it wasn't misconduct. Couldn't get through to Washington ESD to check on my claim status - their phone system is absolutely terrible.

0 coins

How long did adjudication take? I'm already stressed about money and don't want to wait months for a decision.

Mine took about 6 weeks total. The worst part was not being able to talk to anyone about what was happening. I eventually found this service called Claimyr that helped me get through to an actual person at Washington ESD. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works.

ugh the phone system is THE WORST. I've been calling for 3 days straight and can't get through. it just hangs up on me every time.

Same here! I've tried calling at different times and it's always busy or the call drops.

That's exactly why I used Claimyr - they handle all the calling for you and actually get you connected to a real person. Worth every penny when you're dealing with this stress.

For someone making $55k, you're probably looking at somewhere between $400-500 per week in unemployment benefits. That's assuming you don't get disqualified for misconduct. The exact amount depends on your specific earnings pattern over the base period.

0 coins

That's actually more than I expected. Is there a waiting period before benefits start?

0 coins

Sarah Jones

•

Yes, there's a one-week waiting period where you don't get paid. And you have to file weekly claims and meet job search requirements to keep getting benefits.

0 coins

Don't forget about the job search requirements! You need to make at least 3 job search contacts per week and keep a log. Washington ESD is pretty strict about this now.

0 coins

What kind of job search activities count? Just applying for jobs or other stuff too?

0 coins

Applications, networking events, job fairs, interviews, even creating profiles on job sites. There's a list on the Washington ESD website of approved activities.

I hate to be negative but the whole system is designed to make it hard for people to get benefits. They'll find any excuse to deny your claim or make you jump through hoops.

That's not really helpful. The system has rules but most people who qualify do get their benefits eventually.

Easy to say when you're not the one trying to pay rent while waiting for adjudication to finish. The bureaucracy is insane.

The key thing is to file as soon as possible after you lose your job. Don't wait thinking you'll find something quickly. Benefits are backdated to when you first become eligible, not when you apply.

0 coins

Good to know. I'm hoping it doesn't come to that but better to be prepared.

Exactly. And keep detailed records of everything - your termination paperwork, pay stubs, any communications with your employer. You might need it all for the claim.

Been there, done that. Got fired from my sales job in 2023 and qualified for $445 per week. The hardest part wasn't the money calculation - it was actually getting answers when I had questions about my claim status.

0 coins

How did you eventually get through to someone at Washington ESD?

I used Claimyr after trying for weeks on my own. They got me connected to an agent the same day I signed up. Made all the difference in getting my issues resolved quickly.

Just want to add that if you're fired, your employer will likely contest the claim. They don't want their unemployment insurance rates to go up. Be prepared to explain your side of the story during adjudication.

0 coins

What happens if they contest it? Does that automatically disqualify me?

Amara Torres

No, but it triggers an investigation. Washington ESD will review both sides and make a determination. That's why it's important to provide detailed information when you file.

The benefit calculator on Washington ESD's website is pretty accurate if you want to estimate your weekly amount. Just need your quarterly earnings for the base period.

0 coins

I'll check that out. Thanks for the tip!

Remember you can also work part-time while collecting unemployment as long as you report your earnings. They'll reduce your benefits but you might still get some money plus keep your claim active.

0 coins

That's good to know. I might be able to pick up some freelance work if this happens.

Just make sure to report ALL earnings, even small amounts. Not reporting can cause overpayment issues later.

Whatever you do, don't quit before getting fired if you think termination is coming. Quitting without good cause makes you ineligible for benefits.

0 coins

Yeah I've heard that. I'll stick it out even if things get uncomfortable.

The whole adjudication process is a nightmare. I waited 8 weeks for a decision on my claim and couldn't get any updates. Finally had to use one of those services that calls for you.

Which service did you use? I'm dealing with the same issue right now.

Claimyr. They actually get you through to a real person instead of just hanging up on you. Wish I'd found them sooner.

Based on your salary, you're probably looking at around $450-480 per week if you qualify. That's before taxes though - they do withhold federal taxes if you elect for it.

0 coins

They take taxes out of unemployment benefits? I didn't know that.

0 coins

Hannah Flores

•

It's optional but recommended. Otherwise you'll owe taxes on the benefits when you file your return next year.

0 coins

Hope it doesn't come to this for you but at least you're planning ahead. Most people don't think about unemployment until they need it.

0 coins

Yeah, better to be prepared. Thanks everyone for all the helpful info!
