Washington ESD unemployment age requirement - do you have to be 18 to get benefits?
My younger brother just turned 17 and got laid off from his part-time job at a local restaurant. He's been working there for about 8 months and they were taking taxes out of his paychecks. Now he's wondering if he can file for unemployment benefits with Washington ESD since he's not 18 yet. I've been trying to find information online but it's not super clear about age requirements for minors. Has anyone dealt with this situation before? Can someone under 18 collect unemployment in Washington state?

Yes, minors can collect unemployment benefits in Washington as long as they meet the other eligibility requirements. Age isn't a disqualifying factor - what matters is whether he earned enough wages and worked enough hours to qualify for benefits.

•That's good to know! He definitely worked enough hours, probably around 15-20 hours per week for those 8 months.

•The wage requirement is usually pretty low for part-time workers so he should be fine on that front too.

Your brother should definitely apply through the Washington ESD website. The main requirements are having sufficient wages in the base period and being able and available for work. Since he's 17, he'll also need to make sure he's following any child labor laws for his job search.

•Good point about the child labor laws. I hadn't thought about that affecting his job search requirements.

•Yeah the job search requirements are the same regardless of age - he'll need to be looking for work and keep a log of his applications.

I had trouble getting through to Washington ESD when I needed to ask about my nephew's similar situation last year. The phone lines are always busy and it's hard to get specific answers about unusual cases like minors filing claims.

•Have you tried using Claimyr? It's a service that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents. I used it when I couldn't reach anyone about my adjudication issue and it worked great. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Never heard of that but I'll definitely check it out. Getting through to an actual person at Washington ESD is nearly impossible otherwise.

wait im confused - don't you need a parent or guardian to sign stuff when you're under 18? like for work permits and things like that??

•For the unemployment application itself, I don't think parental consent is required. But there might be some forms or processes where being a minor could complicate things.

•That's a good question. I should probably help him with the application process just to make sure everything goes smoothly.

The biggest thing is making sure he has all his wage information. Restaurant jobs sometimes have cash tips that need to be reported properly, and if he didn't report all his tips that could affect his benefit calculation.

•He was just a prep cook so no tips to worry about, but that's definitely something to keep in mind for other people in restaurant jobs.

•Yeah tip reporting is super important for benefit calculations. I made that mistake once and it messed up my whole claim.

I think the real question is whether he'll be able to find work that fits around school schedules. Washington ESD requires you to be available for full-time work, but there might be exceptions for students.

•He actually dropped out of high school last year, so school schedule isn't an issue. He's been looking for full-time work since getting laid off.

•In that case he should be fine on the availability requirement. Just make sure he documents his job search activities properly.

My daughter filed for unemployment when she was 17 after losing her retail job. The process was exactly the same as for adults - she just had to provide her SSN and wage history. Washington ESD didn't ask about her age at all during the application.

•That's really helpful to know! Did she have any issues with the weekly claim filing or anything like that?

•Nope, the weekly claims were straightforward. She just had to report any work and wages each week like everyone else.

•Good to hear a success story. Sometimes these edge cases can be tricky but sounds like Washington ESD handles minor claimants pretty normally.

One thing to consider is that if he does find work, there might be restrictions on how many hours he can work per week as a minor. That could affect his benefit payments if he's doing part-time work while collecting.

•True, but since he's looking for full-time work anyway, hopefully he'll find something that gets him off unemployment quickly.

•And if he does end up working part-time while collecting, Washington ESD has a partial benefit system that handles that situation.

Just make sure he files his claim as soon as possible. There's no waiting period for when you can apply, and benefits are calculated from when you first become unemployed, not when you file.

•He got laid off about a week ago, so I'll help him file this weekend. Thanks for the reminder about timing!

•Yeah definitely don't wait. Every week you delay filing is potentially a week of benefits you're missing out on.

The Washington ESD website has a pretty detailed eligibility checker that might help clarify things. It walks through all the requirements step by step.

Mateo Gonzalez
•I'll have him try that first before filing the actual claim. Good suggestion!

•The eligibility checker is really helpful. Saved me from filing a claim I wouldn't have qualified for anyway.

honestly the whole system is confusing even for adults... at least being 17 means he's got family to help him navigate it all. when i filed my first claim i had no idea what i was doing

•Yeah I'm definitely planning to help him through the process. The Washington ESD website isn't the most user-friendly.

•Having someone who's been through it before really helps. The terminology alone can be overwhelming for first-time filers.

If he runs into any issues or needs to talk to someone at Washington ESD about his specific situation, I've had good luck with Claimyr for getting through to actual agents. It's way better than trying to call the regular customer service line.

•A couple other people mentioned that service too. Might be worth trying if we hit any snags during the application process.

•I was skeptical at first but Claimyr actually works. Got me connected to an agent in like 10 minutes when I'd been trying to call for weeks.

The main thing is just making sure he meets the basic wage and work requirements. Age really isn't a factor for Washington ESD unemployment benefits - they care more about your work history than how old you are.

Mateo Gonzalez
•Perfect, that's exactly what I was hoping to hear. Sounds like he should be eligible based on his work history.

•Yep, as long as he earned enough in his base period and lost his job through no fault of his own, he should be good to go.

Make sure he has his Social Security card and any pay stubs from the restaurant job. Washington ESD might ask for documentation to verify his wages and employment.

•Good point. I'll make sure he gathers all his paperwork before starting the application.

•Having everything organized beforehand makes the whole process much smoother. Learned that the hard way on my first claim.

One more thing - if his former employer contests the claim, don't panic. It's pretty common and doesn't necessarily mean he won't get benefits. Just make sure to respond to any requests for information from Washington ESD.

•The restaurant seemed pretty understanding about the layoff, so hopefully there won't be any issues there.

•Even when employers don't contest, Washington ESD sometimes does their own review. Just be prepared to provide details about the job loss if they ask.
