Washington ESD eligibility if you have two jobs and lose one - partial unemployment benefits?
I've been working two part-time jobs for the past year - one at a retail store (about 25 hours/week) and another doing evening data entry (15 hours/week). The retail job just eliminated my position due to budget cuts. Can I file for Washington ESD unemployment benefits even though I still have the other job? I'm not sure if having one job disqualifies me or if there's such a thing as partial unemployment. My hours at the data entry job aren't enough to cover my bills and I'm really stressed about making rent next month.

Yes, you can definitely file for partial unemployment benefits in Washington! The fact that you still have one job doesn't automatically disqualify you. Washington ESD has provisions for people who lose one of multiple jobs or have their hours significantly reduced. You'll need to report your earnings from the remaining job when you file your weekly claims.

•That's such a relief to hear! Do you know if there's a minimum amount I need to earn from the lost job to qualify?

•You'll need to meet the standard base period earnings requirements just like any other claim. Washington ESD looks at your total earnings from all jobs during your base period to determine eligibility and benefit amount.

I went through this exact situation last year when I lost my weekend job but kept my weekday position. The key thing is being honest about your remaining income when you file weekly claims. Your benefit amount will be reduced based on what you earn from your remaining job, but you can still get partial benefits.

•How much did they reduce your benefits? I'm trying to figure out if it's even worth filing if the reduction is huge.

•It depends on your weekly benefit amount and earnings. Generally, if you earn less than your weekly benefit amount plus $5, you'll get some partial payment. The formula can be confusing though.

•Wait, there's a formula? I thought if you worked at all you couldn't get unemployment benefits.

File ASAP! I made the mistake of waiting because I wasn't sure about the rules and lost a couple weeks of potential benefits. Even partial unemployment can help bridge the gap while you look for another job to replace the one you lost.

•Good point about filing quickly. I've been putting it off because the Washington ESD website is confusing and I kept getting overwhelmed.

•If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to ask questions about your specific situation, I recently discovered Claimyr (claimyr.com). They help people connect with ESD agents when the phone lines are always busy. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Might be worth checking out if you need to speak with someone directly about partial benefits.

partial unemployment is definitely a thing but the paperwork is annoying. you have to report your hours and earnings every week and if you mess up they can make you pay back benefits

•That sounds scary about paying back benefits. What happens if I accidentally report something wrong?

•As long as you're making an honest effort to report accurately, minor mistakes can usually be corrected. The problems arise when people intentionally don't report work or earnings.

You should also make sure you're available for full-time work and actively job searching. Just because you have one part-time job doesn't mean you can ignore the job search requirements. Washington ESD still expects you to be looking for suitable work to replace what you lost.

•Do I need to look for jobs that match my lost retail position, or can I search for anything in my skill set?

•You should look for suitable work based on your experience and skills. It doesn't have to be identical to the job you lost, but it should be reasonable given your background.

•The job search requirement is usually 3 job contacts per week for partial unemployment claims, same as regular claims. Keep good records in case they audit your job search log.

I'm in a similar boat - lost my morning cleaning job but still have my afternoon position. Been putting off filing because I wasn't sure if I'd qualify. This thread is really helpful!

•Right? I feel so much better knowing I'm not alone in this situation. Are you going to file now?

•Yes, definitely going to start the application this weekend. Better to try and get something than struggle with just one job.

Make sure you understand the earnings deduction formula before you get surprised by a smaller check than expected. Washington ESD subtracts 75% of your gross earnings over $5 from your weekly benefit amount. So if your weekly benefit is $300 and you earn $100, you'd get $300 - (75% of $95) = $228.75.

•Thank you for breaking down the math! That actually doesn't seem as bad as I thought it would be.

•Is that calculation the same for everyone or does it depend on your benefit amount?

Jasmine Hancock
•The 75% deduction rate is standard, but obviously the dollar amounts vary based on your individual weekly benefit amount and earnings.

washington esd system is so complicated why cant they just make it simple if you lose a job you get help period

•I know it's frustrating, but the complexity exists to prevent fraud and ensure benefits go to people who genuinely need them.

One thing to watch out for - if your remaining job offers you additional hours to make up for your lost income, you might be required to accept them. Washington ESD considers refusing suitable work that would replace your lost wages.

•My data entry job is pretty limited in terms of available hours, but that's good to know for the future.

•What if the additional hours conflict with your job search activities? Seems like a catch-22.

•That's where it gets complicated. You'd need to balance the requirements and possibly discuss with an ESD representative about your specific situation.

I tried calling Washington ESD multiple times to ask about partial benefits and could never get through. The hold times are insane and half the time I got disconnected after waiting an hour. Super frustrating when you just need a quick answer about your eligibility.

•Same experience here. I finally used Claimyr to get connected to an actual person at ESD. It was so much easier than trying to call directly - they handle all the waiting and callback stuff for you.

•Never heard of that service. Does it actually work?

•Yeah, it worked great for me. You just give them your info and they call you back when they get an ESD agent on the line. Saved me hours of frustration.

Don't forget that you'll need documentation from both jobs when you file - pay stubs, termination letter from the job you lost, etc. Washington ESD will want to verify your work history and the reason for separation.

•Good reminder! I have my last few pay stubs but I should ask my old manager for something in writing about the position elimination.

•Email works too if they send you something explaining the layoff. I saved all my work emails when I got laid off just in case.

Another consideration - if you find a new second job while collecting partial benefits, you'll need to report that immediately. Some people think they can just wait until their next weekly claim but that can cause overpayment issues.

Mikayla Davison
•How quickly do you need to report a new job? Like within 24 hours or just before the next weekly claim?

Niko Ramsey
•You should report it as soon as possible, ideally within a few days. Definitely don't wait until your next weekly claim filing.

This whole thread has been super informative. I've been working three part-time jobs and always wondered what would happen if I lost one of them. Good to know there are options!

•Three part-time jobs sounds exhausting! At least now we both know we have some safety net if something happens.

•The gig economy has made these multi-job situations so much more common. Washington ESD has had to adapt their policies to keep up.

Just want to add that if your remaining job is significantly different from the one you lost (like retail vs data entry), you should still look for work in both fields. Don't limit your job search to just one type of position.

Mikayla Davison
•That makes sense. I have experience in both areas so I should definitely be applying for both types of jobs.

File online if possible rather than trying to call. The Washington ESD website application process is actually pretty straightforward once you get started, and you can save your progress if you need to gather more information.

•I started looking at the online application earlier and got overwhelmed by all the questions. Maybe I just need to sit down and work through it step by step.

•Take your time with it and have all your documents ready before you start. It's better to be thorough than to rush and make mistakes.

One last thing - keep detailed records of everything related to your claim. Dates, times of calls, copies of all documents, weekly claim confirmations. If any issues come up later, having good records will save you a lot of headaches.

I'm in a very similar situation - just lost my weekend retail job but still have my weekday office job. Reading through all these responses has been incredibly helpful! I had no idea partial unemployment was even an option. The earnings deduction formula that @Jasmine Hancock explained really helps me understand what to expect. I'm definitely going to file this week rather than continuing to stress about making ends meet with just one job. Thanks to everyone who shared their experiences - it's reassuring to know I'm not alone in navigating this complicated situation.
