Washington ESD claim showing decline after initial approval - what caused this?
My Washington ESD claim was approved back in January and I was getting my full weekly benefit amount of $844 for about 6 weeks. Then suddenly my payments started declining week by week without any explanation. First it dropped to $720, then $580, then last week only $340. I haven't changed anything about my job search or reported any work. My SecureAccess Washington account doesn't show any issues or overpayments. Has anyone experienced this kind of gradual decline in their unemployment benefits? I'm really confused about what could be causing this pattern and worried I'm going to lose everything.

this happened to my neighbor too, turned out Washington ESD was doing some kind of automatic calculation error

•Did they figure out how to fix it? I'm getting really worried about next week's payment.

•yeah but it took like 3 weeks to sort out, they had to call Washington ESD multiple times

You need to check if there's a partial earnings deduction being applied incorrectly. Sometimes Washington ESD's system will start reducing benefits based on old work reports that weren't processed correctly. Log into your account and look under 'Payment History' for any deduction codes.

•I checked that already - there's no deduction codes showing up anywhere. It just shows the reduced amounts with no explanation.

•Then this is definitely a system error. You'll need to speak with an actual agent to get this resolved, not the automated system.

I had this exact same problem last year! The decline pattern sounds identical to what happened to me. Washington ESD's computer system was somehow applying a percentage reduction each week like I was working part-time, but I wasn't working at all. I tried calling for weeks but could never get through to anyone who could help.

•How did you finally get it fixed? I'm losing sleep over this.

•I ended up using this service called Claimyr that got me through to a Washington ESD agent in like 15 minutes. The agent found the error immediately and fixed all my back payments. You can check it out at claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works.

•Never heard of that service before, is it legit? Sounds too good to be true.

•I was skeptical too but it actually worked. Way better than spending hours trying to call Washington ESD myself.

THE WASHINGTON ESD SYSTEM IS COMPLETELY BROKEN!!! This same thing happened to me and three other people I know. They just randomly start reducing your benefits with NO WARNING and NO EXPLANATION. You have to fight tooth and nail to get anyone to help you!

•I feel your frustration but getting angry won't solve the technical issue here.

•Easy for you to say when you're not watching your benefits disappear week by week!

This sounds like a monetary determination error where Washington ESD is recalculating your weekly benefit amount based on incorrect wage information. When this happens, the system can start reducing benefits in stages rather than all at once. You'll need to request a redetermination of your monetary eligibility. The key is getting to an agent who can review your original wage calculation versus what the system is currently using.

KylieRose
•How do I request a redetermination? Is that something I can do online or do I have to call?
0 coins
Esmeralda Gómez
•You have to call Washington ESD directly. There's no online option for monetary redeterminations. That's why so many people get stuck in this situation - they can't reach anyone by phone.

•This is exactly why I used Claimyr when I had my adjudication issue. Sometimes you just need to actually talk to a human at Washington ESD and their phone system makes that nearly impossible otherwise.

omg same thing happening to me right now!! started at $756 per week now down to $445 and no idea why

•When did yours start declining? Mine began about 3 weeks ago.

•like 2 weeks ago, so frustrating because I really need that money

For everyone experiencing this issue - document everything. Screenshot your payment history, save copies of all your weekly claim submissions, and write down the exact dates when the reductions started. When you finally reach an agent, having this documentation will make the resolution much faster.

•Good advice. I always screenshot my weekly claims now after getting burned by Washington ESD's system errors before.

I work for a nonprofit that helps people with unemployment issues and we see this declining benefit pattern about once a month. It's usually caused by the system incorrectly processing old wage information or applying deductions that shouldn't be there. The only real solution is speaking with a claims specialist at Washington ESD who can access your full case file.

•That's really helpful to know it's a known issue. Do you have any tips for actually reaching a claims specialist?

•Honestly, the regular phone lines are overwhelmed. A lot of our clients have had success with services like Claimyr that can get you through to agents faster. Sometimes it's worth paying for help when your benefits are at stake.

This is so weird, my cousin had the exact same pattern happen to her benefits last month. Started high, then went down a little each week until it was almost nothing. She eventually got it fixed but it took forever.

KylieRose
•How long did it take her to get it resolved?

Tyrone Johnson
•like 6 weeks total, but most of that was just trying to reach someone at Washington ESD

I'm dealing with this right now too and it's making me lose my mind. Started at $692 weekly, now down to $380 over the past month. I've submitted three messages through SecureAccess Washington and haven't heard anything back. The whole system is a nightmare.

•The messaging system is useless for urgent issues like this. You really need to talk to someone directly.

•I know but I can't get through on the phone no matter when I call!

•That's exactly why I mentioned Claimyr earlier - it's frustrating to pay for something that should be free, but sometimes you have to do what works.

Check if you have any old jobs that might be reporting wages incorrectly to Washington ESD. Sometimes employers file quarterly reports late and it can mess up your benefit calculations retroactively.
0 coins
KylieRose
•How would I check that? Is there a way to see what wage information Washington ESD has on file for me?
0 coins
Zainab Mahmoud
•You'd need to request your wage records from Washington ESD, but again, that requires actually talking to someone there.

This happened to me in 2023 and it turned out Washington ESD had somehow linked my claim to someone else's part-time work hours. The system was automatically reducing my benefits thinking I was working when I wasn't. Took 8 weeks to straighten out and I almost went broke waiting.
0 coins
KylieRose
•That's terrifying. How did they finally figure out the mix-up?

Ava Williams
•An agent had to manually review my entire file and compare it with the other person's account. It was a mess but they eventually fixed it and gave me all the back pay.

whatever you do don't wait too long to get this fixed, I waited 2 months thinking it would resolve itself and ended up owing money somehow

KylieRose
•Wait, you ended up owing money? How is that possible?

•they said I was overpaid during the weeks when the amounts were wrong, made no sense to me

Based on all these similar experiences, this appears to be a systemic issue with Washington ESD's benefit calculation algorithm. The declining pattern suggests the system is incorrectly applying some kind of progressive reduction formula. Everyone affected should document their cases and push for resolution through direct agent contact.

•Makes me wonder how many people are dealing with this and just don't know where to get help.

•Probably more than we realize. A lot of people assume the system is correct and don't question the reductions.

•This is exactly the problem Claimyr solves - they handle all the calling and waiting so you don't have to. Worth every penny when you're losing benefits like this.

I'm a former Washington ESD employee and this declining benefit issue usually happens when there's a data sync error between the wage database and the payment system. It's a known bug but they've never properly fixed it. The only way to resolve it is having an agent manually correct the calculation.
0 coins
KylieRose
•That's really helpful insight! Do you know if there's a specific department that handles these calculation errors?
0 coins
Paolo Bianchi
•It would go to the monetary unit, but you can't reach them directly. Any claims agent should be able to escalate it properly though.

•That's why it's important to check your payments every week and question anything that doesn't look right immediately.

Final update: I used Claimyr like several people suggested and got connected to a Washington ESD agent in about 20 minutes. She found the error immediately - somehow my account was flagged as having unreported income when I've been unemployed the whole time. She fixed it on the spot and said I'll get all the missing money in my next payment. Cannot believe how simple the fix was once I actually talked to someone who knew what they were doing!
