What happens when unemployment balance runs out - Washington ESD options?

My regular UI claim balance is getting really low and I'm worried about what happens next. I've been collecting for about 22 weeks now and my account shows only $1,800 left. I'm still actively job searching but haven't found anything yet. Does Washington ESD automatically extend benefits or do I need to apply for something else? I keep hearing about different programs but I'm confused about what I qualify for. Has anyone been through this before?

When your regular UI benefits are exhausted, Washington ESD should automatically file you for Extended Benefits (EB) if they're available in our state. You don't need to do anything - they'll send you a notice if you qualify. EB can provide up to 13 additional weeks of benefits at the same weekly amount.

That's a relief! Do you know if EB is currently available in Washington? I haven't seen anything about it on the ESD website.

EB availability depends on the state's unemployment rate. You can check the current status on the Washington ESD website under the Extended Benefits section.

That's what I'm afraid of. Did you ever find work or did you have to reapply for benefits later?

found a temp job after about 2 months of nothing. then when that ended i had enough earnings to qualify for a new claim

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to check your options, I recently discovered Claimyr (claimyr.com) which helped me connect with an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Really saved me from spending hours on hold trying to get answers about my claim status.

Thanks for the tip! How much does something like that cost?

I'd rather not get into pricing here, but for me it was worth it to actually talk to someone who could explain my specific situation instead of guessing from the website.

I've heard good things about that service too. When you're dealing with benefit exhaustion, it's crucial to get accurate info directly from ESD.

IMPORTANT: Make sure you keep filing your weekly claims even if your balance is low! Some people think they should stop when they see a small balance, but you need to keep filing to be considered for any extensions or new programs.

I've been continuing to file weekly - good to know that's the right thing to do!

0 coins

Yes this is critical! I made the mistake of stopping my weekly claims when I had like $200 left and it messed up my eligibility for extensions.

Have you looked into whether you can start a new benefit year? If it's been a full year since you filed your original claim and you've worked enough since then, you might qualify for a completely new claim rather than an extension.

I haven't worked at all during my unemployment period, so I don't think I'd have enough earnings for a new claim.

0 coins

In that case, extensions would be your only option if they're available. The good news is extended benefits use the same weekly benefit amount as your original claim.

Whatever you do, don't panic. Washington state has been pretty good about providing extensions when unemployment rates are high. Even if EB isn't available right now, they sometimes activate it quickly when economic conditions change.

That's reassuring. I'm trying not to stress too much but it's hard when you're watching that balance tick down.

I totally get the anxiety. Been watching my balance for weeks now too. At least we're not alone in this situation.

The Washington ESD website has a benefits calculator that might help you figure out exactly when your benefits will run out. It's under the 'Manage Your Claim' section if you log into your account.

I'll check that out - having an exact date would help me plan better.

That calculator is really helpful. Just remember it assumes you'll keep getting your full weekly amount, so factor in any part-time work that might reduce your payments.

This whole system is so confusing!! Why can't they just automatically tell us what happens next instead of making us guess? I'm in the same boat and have no idea what I qualify for.

They usually do send notices about extensions, but sometimes they come later than people expect. If you're worried, you can always call to ask about your specific situation.

That's exactly why I used Claimyr - trying to get through to ESD by normal methods was impossible. At least with their service I could get real answers about my benefits timeline.

Don't forget you still need to keep doing your job search activities even if you're on an extension! The work search requirements don't change just because you're on EB instead of regular UI.

Good point - I've been keeping up with my job search log anyway since I actually want to find work.

Yes! And make sure to keep documenting everything in WorkSourceWA. They can audit your job search activities at any time.

I went through benefit exhaustion in 2023 and there were no extensions available at that time. Had to rely on food banks and family help for a few months. It was rough but I made it through. Just wanted to share that even worst case scenario, you'll figure it out.

Thank you for sharing that. It's good to hear from someone who's been through it, even if it wasn't easy.

Stories like this remind me how important it is to have some kind of emergency savings even when money is tight.

Check with your local WorkSource office too. They sometimes have information about other programs or resources that might be available when UI runs out. Plus they can help with job placement services.

Rhett Bowman

•

That's a good idea. I should probably be using all the resources available to me anyway.

WorkSource can also help with training programs that might make you more employable. Some of them even come with financial assistance.

The timing of when extensions kick in can be tricky. Sometimes there's a gap between when your regular benefits end and when extended benefits start. Just be prepared for that possibility.

0 coins

Rhett Bowman

•

Oh no, I hadn't thought about a gap in payments. How long could that be?

0 coins

Lia Quinn

•

Usually just a week or two while they process the extension, but it varies. That's why it's good to plan ahead financially if possible.

Whatever happens, make sure you understand exactly why benefits are ending and what your options are. Don't just assume there's nothing else available. Washington ESD should provide clear information about next steps.

Rhett Bowman

•

Absolutely. I'm going to make sure I get official information rather than just worrying based on what I think might happen.

Smart approach. Getting accurate information from ESD directly is always better than trying to figure it out from forums or outdated websites.

Has anyone here actually successfully used one of those callback services? I keep seeing Claimyr mentioned but I'm skeptical about paying for something that should be free.

Nolan Carter

•

I was skeptical too, but after spending literally days trying to get through to ESD on my own, it was worth it for me. Sometimes you need to weigh your time and stress against the cost.

I used it once when I had an urgent adjudication issue. Worked exactly as advertised - got connected to an actual ESD agent who could access my account.
