How to apply for extended unemployment benefits in Washington - need help with the process
My regular UI benefits are about to run out in two weeks and I'm panicking. I've been unemployed for 8 months now and still haven't found anything stable. I keep hearing about extended benefits but Washington ESD's website is confusing and I can't figure out how to actually apply. Do I need to file a new claim or does it happen automatically? I'm scared there's going to be a gap in payments and I can't afford that right now. Has anyone been through this process recently?

Extended benefits in Washington aren't automatic - you need to check if they're even available first. Washington ESD only offers extended benefits when the state unemployment rate meets specific federal triggers. Right now I don't think we qualify but you should call Washington ESD to confirm your specific situation.

•I've been trying to call for days but can never get through. The phone just rings and rings or I get a busy signal.

•Same here, I gave up trying to call Washington ESD weeks ago. Their phone system is completely useless.

Washington state doesn't currently have extended benefits activated. The federal Extended Benefits (EB) program requires specific unemployment rate triggers that we haven't met. However, you might want to look into other programs or see if you qualify for any training benefits through WorkSource.

•So there's literally nothing available after regular UI runs out? That seems crazy given how hard it is to find work right now.

Hannah White
•Unfortunately that's correct for now. The EB program is tied to state unemployment rates and federal formulas. You should definitely explore retraining programs though - some have income support.

I was in the same boat last year. Had to exhaust all my regular benefits and there was nothing else available. Ended up having to take a part-time job just to survive while still looking for full-time work. It's rough out there.

•Did you have any issues with Washington ESD when you started working part-time? I'm worried about messing up my claim status.

•You have to report all earnings on your weekly claims. As long as you're honest about hours and wages, you should be fine. Just make sure to keep detailed records.

I actually found a service called Claimyr that helped me get through to Washington ESD when I needed to ask about benefit extensions. You can check them out at claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling.

•Is this legit? I'm desperate enough to try anything at this point but don't want to get scammed.

•Yeah it's real. They basically call Washington ESD for you and get you connected to an actual person. Way better than sitting on hold for hours.

•I was skeptical too but tried Claimyr when I couldn't reach Washington ESD about my adjudication issue. Actually worked and got me through to someone who could help.

extended benefits are a joke anyway. even when they were available during covid the amount was barely enough to survive on. this whole system is designed to push people into taking any crappy job

•The system isn't perfect but unemployment benefits were never meant to be permanent income replacement. They're supposed to provide temporary support while you find work.

•temporary support that runs out before you can find decent work in this economy. real helpful.

Check your online account to see your benefit year end date. If you're close to exhausting benefits, Washington ESD should send you information about what happens next. Though their communication isn't always timely...

•I checked and it shows my benefit year ends next month. Haven't gotten any letters or messages about what to do next.

•That's typical. Washington ESD is terrible at proactive communication. You'll probably need to call them directly to find out your options.

I think I'm confusing extended benefits with something else. Is that different from the additional weeks you can get if you're in job training?
0 coins
Hannah White
•Yes, completely different programs. Training benefits can extend your claim if you're enrolled in approved training, but extended benefits (EB) are additional weeks based on unemployment rates.

Jessica Nguyen
•Thanks for clarifying! I should look into the training option then since EB isn't available.

OP, your best bet is to contact Washington ESD directly to discuss your specific situation. While extended benefits aren't currently available, they can explain what happens when your benefit year ends and if you have any other options.

•Back to the calling problem though. How do I actually reach someone at Washington ESD when their phones are always busy?

Mateo Silva
•That's exactly why I mentioned Claimyr earlier. They specialize in getting through to Washington ESD when the normal phone lines are jammed.

Wait, so if extended benefits aren't available, what exactly happens when regular UI runs out? Do you just get cut off completely?

Hannah White
•If no extended programs are available, yes, benefits end when you exhaust your regular UI. You'd need to file a new claim if you have enough work history in the base period.

•That's terrifying. No wonder people are struggling so much right now.

I remember during the pandemic there were all sorts of extended programs. Are any of those still around or was that just temporary?

Hannah White
•Those were all temporary federal programs that ended in 2021. PEUC, FPUC, PUA - all gone. Now we're back to just regular UI and the standard Extended Benefits program when it's triggered.

•Man, I didn't realize how much extra help was available during COVID until it was gone.

For what it's worth, you should definitely explore WorkSource training programs. Some of them provide financial support while you're learning new skills, and it might be better than just sitting around waiting for extended benefits that don't exist.

Santiago Martinez
•Do you know how to find out what training programs are available? The WorkSource website is almost as confusing as Washington ESD's.

Michael Green
•You can visit a WorkSource center in person or call them. They're usually more helpful than trying to navigate the website.

honestly the whole unemployment system in washington is broken. took me 3 months just to get my initial claim approved and now theyre saying no extended benefits either. what are people supposed to do?

Nick Kravitz
•The system definitely has problems but unfortunately that's what we're working with. Focus on what you can control - job searching, training opportunities, maybe part-time work.

•easier said than done when you cant even get through to anyone at washington esd to ask questions

I used Claimyr about a month ago when I needed to talk to Washington ESD about my claim status. Worked great - got connected to someone in like 20 minutes instead of calling all day. Worth checking out if you need to actually speak with someone there.

Santiago Martinez
•Ok I keep seeing Claimyr mentioned. Is there a cost or is it free?

Evelyn Martinez
•There is a cost but honestly it was worth it to avoid the frustration of trying to call Washington ESD myself. Check their website for current pricing.

Just to be clear - you should verify your benefit year end date and see if you have enough work history to file a new regular claim when this one ends. That might be your only option right now.

Santiago Martinez
•How do I know if I have enough work history for a new claim? I worked for about 6 months before I got laid off.

•You need earnings in at least two quarters of your base period. Washington ESD can tell you if you qualify when you contact them about your situation.

The whole extended benefits thing is confusing because it depends on unemployment rates and federal formulas that most people don't understand. Bottom line is Washington doesn't qualify right now.

Santiago Martinez
•Is there any way to know when or if extended benefits might become available in the future?

Maya Lewis
•Washington ESD would announce it if the triggers are met, but don't count on it happening anytime soon given current economic conditions.

same situation here, benefits running out soon and no extended options. really stressful not knowing what comes next

I went through this last year when my benefits ended. Had to file a new claim but barely qualified. The whole process was stressful but I eventually got approved for a new benefit year.

Santiago Martinez
•How long did it take to get the new claim processed? I'm worried about gaps in payments.

Lucy Taylor
•Took about 3 weeks for me, but that was last year. Processing times seem to vary a lot with Washington ESD.

Make sure you keep filing your weekly claims until your benefits officially end. Don't stop filing just because you're worried about extended benefits - you might miss payments you're still entitled to.
0 coins
Santiago Martinez
•Good point, I'll definitely keep filing until I get official notice that my claim is ending.
0 coins
Connor Murphy
•Exactly. Washington ESD will send you information about your claim ending, but keep filing until then to avoid any issues.

This thread has been really helpful. I'm in a similar situation and didn't know extended benefits weren't available right now. Guess I need to start planning for other options.

•Glad I'm not the only one who was confused about this. The information isn't easy to find on Washington ESD's website.

•Yeah their website is terrible for finding clear information about what happens when benefits end.
