How to apply for more unemployment benefits after exhausting regular Washington ESD claim?

My regular UI benefits just ran out last week after 26 weeks and I'm still unemployed. I thought there might be extended benefits or something else I could apply for but I can't find clear info on the Washington ESD website. Do I need to file a new claim or is there some kind of extension program? I've been looking for work this whole time and documenting everything in WorkSourceWA like required. Really stressed about this since I still haven't found anything and bills are piling up.

You'll need to check if you're eligible for Extended Benefits (EB) or any federal extensions that might be active. These aren't automatic - you have to apply separately. The availability depends on Washington state's unemployment rate and federal programs.

Where do I apply for EB? Is it through the same Washington ESD portal or a different system?

0 coins

Same portal - secure.esd.wa.gov. Look for the option to file for extended benefits, but first check if EB is even triggered in Washington right now.

0 coins

Extended benefits aren't always available - it depends on the state's unemployment rate being high enough to trigger the program. Last I checked Washington's rate wasn't high enough but that changes quarterly.

0 coins

How do I find out the current trigger status? This is so confusing.

0 coins

Washington ESD publishes the EB trigger status on their website. If you can't find it, try calling them directly, though good luck getting through.

I was in the same boat last month! Took me forever to get through to Washington ESD to ask about this. Finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got connected to an agent who explained my options. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

0 coins

Never heard of Claimyr - is it legit? I'm desperate enough to try anything at this point.

0 coins

Yeah it's real. They basically help you get through to Washington ESD agents when the phone lines are jammed. Saved me hours of calling and getting hung up on.

0 coins

How much does something like that cost though? If I'm out of benefits I can't afford to pay for calling services.

0 coins

You might also want to look into filing a new regular claim if it's been a full year since your original claim. Sometimes you can establish a new benefit year if you've worked enough hours.

0 coins

I only worked for about 3 months before getting laid off, so probably not enough work history for a new claim.

0 coins

You need to have earned at least $1,000 in your base period and meet other wage requirements. Check your wage history in your Washington ESD account to see if you qualify.

0 coins

this system is such a mess, why can't they just automatically tell us what we're eligible for instead of making us hunt around??

0 coins

Because Washington ESD wants to make it as hard as possible so people give up and don't collect benefits they're entitled to.

0 coins

While frustrating, the system is designed this way because different programs have different eligibility requirements and funding sources. It's not ideal but there are reasons.

0 coins

Have you considered looking into SNAP or other assistance programs while you figure out the unemployment situation? Food stamps might help with some expenses.

0 coins

Good point, I should probably apply for food assistance. Do you know if that affects unemployment eligibility?

0 coins

No, SNAP benefits don't affect your unemployment at all. They're completely separate programs.

0 coins

Check if there are any federal disaster unemployment programs active. Sometimes these provide additional weeks even when regular EB isn't triggered.

0 coins

Where would I find info about disaster programs?

0 coins

Usually announced on the Washington ESD website homepage or in news releases. These are rare though and usually only for specific disasters.

0 coins

i went through this same thing and there was literally nothing available. had to find a crappy part-time job just to survive. the system is broken

0 coins

That's what I'm afraid of. How long ago was this for you?

0 coins

about 6 months ago. maybe things have changed but i doubt it

0 coins

One thing to remember is that you MUST continue filing your weekly claims even if you're not getting paid, otherwise you could lose eligibility for any extensions that become available later.

0 coins

Wait, I have to keep filing even though my benefits are exhausted? That doesn't make sense.

0 coins

Yes, if you want to maintain your claim and be eligible for any future extensions. It's called 'continuing to claim' and it's required.

0 coins

This is correct. I made the mistake of stopping my weekly claims and had to restart everything when EB became available.

0 coins

Try calling the Washington ESD customer service line early in the morning, like right at 8am when they open. That's when I had the best luck getting through.

0 coins

I've tried that but still can't get through. The line is always busy or I get disconnected.

0 coins

That's exactly why I ended up using Claimyr. The regular phone system is basically impossible to get through on your own.

0 coins

Make sure you're keeping up with your job search requirements through WorkSourceWA even if you're not getting paid. They can audit your search activity at any time.

0 coins

Yeah I've been doing that religiously. Three job contacts per week logged in the system.

0 coins

Good! That's the minimum but doing more never hurts. Also make sure you're applying to suitable work based on your experience.

0 coins

Have you looked into retraining programs? Sometimes there are grants or extended benefits available if you enroll in approved training.

0 coins

I hadn't thought about that. Where do I find approved training programs?

0 coins

WorkSourceWA has a list of approved training providers. You might be eligible for Training Benefits if you qualify for certain programs.

0 coins

The whole extended benefits thing is such a lottery system. Sometimes EB gets triggered for like 2 weeks then shuts off again.

0 coins

So even if I become eligible, it might not last long?

0 coins

Exactly. It's based on economic indicators that change constantly. Very unpredictable.

0 coins

whatever you do don't let them trick you into taking a job that pays way less than unemployment. know your rights about suitable work

0 coins

What do you mean by suitable work? Can they force me to take any job?

0 coins

There are rules about what jobs you can refuse. Generally has to be similar to your previous work and pay a reasonable wage based on your experience.

0 coins

I heard some people file interstate claims if they're eligible in multiple states. Not sure if that's legal though.

0 coins

You can only file in one state at a time and it has to be based on where you worked. Filing multiple claims is fraud.

0 coins

Good to know, thanks for clarifying. Didn't want to suggest anything illegal.

0 coins

Try reaching out to your local WorkSource office in person. Sometimes they have better info about available programs than what's online.

0 coins

That's a good idea. Are the offices open for walk-ins now?

0 coins

Most are but call ahead to check. Some still do appointments only or have limited hours.

0 coins

Document everything when you talk to Washington ESD agents. Get names, dates, and what they told you. The info can be inconsistent between different agents.

0 coins

Good advice. I've heard people get different answers from different agents about the same question.

0 coins

Exactly. Having documentation protects you if there's ever a dispute about what you were told.

0 coins

Keep an eye on the Washington ESD news and announcements page. Sometimes new programs get announced with short application windows.

0 coins

I'll bookmark that page. Thanks for all the advice everyone, this has been really helpful.

0 coins

Hope you get through to an agent soon. The Claimyr thing really did help me avoid the phone runaround if you decide to try it.

0 coins

One last thing - if you do get approved for any extension, the payments might be delayed while they process everything. Don't panic if it takes a few weeks.

0 coins

How long of a delay are we talking about typically?

0 coins

Could be 2-4 weeks for processing, but they'll backpay you to when you were eligible. Just keep filing your weekly claims.
