Washington ESD claim approved but worried about high minimum wage affecting my job search

My unemployment claim with Washington ESD was just approved after 2 weeks of adjudication, but I'm starting to stress about finding work. I've been reading about how Washington's minimum wage being so high ($16.28/hour now) might make it harder for employers to hire people like me who've been out of work for a few months. Has anyone else noticed this connection between the high minimum wage here and longer unemployment periods? I'm required to do my job searches through WorkSourceWA and I'm seeing fewer entry-level positions posted. Just wondering if other people on UI have noticed this trend or if I'm overthinking it.

i think youre overthinking it tbh, the job market is just tough right now regardless of minimum wage

Maybe you're right, I'm probably just anxious about getting back to work before my benefits run out.

The anxiety is totally normal when you're on unemployment. Focus on meeting your weekly job search requirements and the rest will follow.

From an economic perspective, there are studies suggesting minimum wage increases can reduce entry-level hiring in some sectors, but Washington's economy has generally remained strong. Your job search success will depend more on your skills and the specific industry you're targeting than the minimum wage level.

That's reassuring. I'm in retail/customer service so hopefully there are still opportunities there.

Retail actually hires pretty consistently in Washington despite the wage requirements. Don't let the economic theories discourage you.

I've been trying to reach Washington ESD for weeks about this exact concern and can never get through on the phone. Finally found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me connect with an actual agent to discuss job search strategies. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

How much does that cost? I'm already tight on money being on unemployment.

It's worth checking out their site for pricing info, but for me it was valuable just to get actual guidance from Washington ESD instead of guessing about job search requirements.

Never heard of this service before but might be useful, thanks for sharing

THIS IS EXACTLY WHY WASHINGTON'S UNEMPLOYMENT RATE IS HIGHER THAN IT SHOULD BE!! When you force businesses to pay $16+ an hour they just hire fewer people or replace workers with technology. It's basic economics but politicians don't care about actual unemployed people.

While there's debate about minimum wage effects, Washington's unemployment rate is actually below the national average in most recent data.

Those statistics don't show the people who gave up looking or took gig work instead of real jobs.

Can we not turn this into a political debate? OP just wants to find work.

I work in HR and can tell you that most employers in Washington have adjusted their hiring practices around the minimum wage requirements. What matters more is showing up prepared for interviews and having the right skills. Make sure your WorkSourceWA profile is updated and you're applying to positions that match your experience level.

Good advice, I should probably update my profile. Do you know if Washington ESD tracks which jobs we apply to through WorkSourceWA vs other sites?

They can see your WorkSourceWA activity but you can also log job searches from other sites in your weekly claim. Just keep good records.

Been on unemployment twice in the past 3 years and honestly the minimum wage thing never seemed to matter for my job search. There are always businesses hiring, you just have to be persistent and willing to start somewhere.

What industry are you in? I'm wondering if some fields are more affected than others.

Food service and warehouse work mostly. Both sectors seem to always need people despite the wage requirements.

my cousin lives in a state with lower minimum wage and she was unemployed for 8 months so idk if wage levels really matter that much

0 coins

Yeah every state has unemployment issues right now, it's not just about wages

•

That's a good point, unemployment is pretty widespread regardless of local wage policies.

One thing to consider is that Washington's higher minimum wage also means unemployment benefits are calculated at higher levels, so you might have more time to find a position that's a good fit rather than taking the first low-paying job available.

I hadn't thought about it that way. My weekly benefit amount is definitely helping me be more selective.

This is a great point - the benefit calculation does give you more breathing room for job searching.

Update: I used that Claimyr service I mentioned and was able to speak with a Washington ESD representative who explained that they're actually seeing good job placement rates for people completing their WorkSourceWA requirements. The agent said not to worry too much about minimum wage effects on hiring.

That's really helpful information! I'm going to focus on meeting my job search requirements and stop worrying about things outside my control.

Good to hear Washington ESD agents are optimistic about job placement rates.

I think the bigger issue is that a lot of jobs now require experience or certifications that people on unemployment might not have, minimum wage aside.

True, I've been looking at some free training programs through WorkSourceWA to add skills while I job search.

WorkSourceWA has excellent training resources - definitely worth exploring while you're receiving benefits.

whatever the connection is between wages and unemployment, at least washington pays decent UI benefits compared to other states

That's definitely true, I'm grateful for that while I'm looking for work.

As someone who owns a small business in Washington, I can say the minimum wage does factor into hiring decisions, but it's not the main barrier. Worker reliability and skills matter much more than the wage requirements.

Logan Scott

•

Thanks for the employer perspective! That's encouraging to hear that skills and reliability are the main factors.

This is really valuable insight from someone actually doing the hiring.

I was worrying about the same thing when I was on unemployment last year but ended up finding work within 6 weeks. The key was applying to lots of places and following up consistently.

Logan Scott

•

That gives me hope! I'm going to focus on increasing my application volume and follow-up efforts.

honestly just focus on meeting your weekly claim requirements and applying to jobs that interest you. overthinking the economics isn't going to help you find work faster

Logan Scott

You're absolutely right. I need to put that energy into actually applying for jobs instead of worrying about macro-economic factors.

Final thought on this topic: Washington's unemployment system is actually designed to support job seekers through the WorkSourceWA platform and benefit structure. The minimum wage is just one factor in a complex economy, and your individual job search efforts will matter much more than wage policy debates.

Thank you everyone for the perspectives and advice. I'm going to stop overthinking this and focus on my job search activities. Really appreciate this community!
