Washington ESD - can you collect unemployment after disability runs out?
My state disability benefits are ending next month and I'm wondering if I can transition to regular unemployment benefits through Washington ESD. I've been on disability for about 8 months due to a back injury but my doctor says I'm cleared to return to work now. The problem is my old job was eliminated while I was out. Can I file for UI benefits or do I need to wait a certain period? I'm confused about how this works and really need the income while I job search.

Yes, you can generally file for unemployment after disability ends as long as you're now able and available for work. The key is that Washington ESD needs to see that you're physically capable of working and actively seeking employment. Since your doctor cleared you, that's a good start.

•That's reassuring to hear. Do I need to provide medical documentation when I file my claim?

•You should have your doctor's clearance letter ready in case Washington ESD requests it during the application process or adjudication.

I went through something similar last year. The tricky part is proving you're able and available for work after being on disability. Washington ESD might put your claim into adjudication to review your medical status.

•How long did the adjudication process take for you? I'm worried about the gap in income.

•Mine took about 3 weeks, which felt like forever when bills were piling up. I couldn't get through to anyone at Washington ESD to check on the status.

•I had a similar issue getting through to Washington ESD. I ended up using Claimyr to help me reach an actual agent. They have this automated callback system that actually works - you can check it out at claimyr.com. There's even a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

Make sure you understand the work search requirements too. Even though your job was eliminated, you'll still need to be actively looking and logging your job search activities in the WorkSourceWA system.

•Good point. I haven't done a job search in almost a year so I'll need to refresh myself on the current requirements.

•The requirements are 3 job search activities per week now. Make sure you keep detailed records because Washington ESD can audit your search activities at any time.

Wait, I thought if you were on disability you couldn't get unemployment? Doesn't that mean you weren't able to work?

•That's a common misconception. You can't collect both at the same time, but once disability ends and you're medically cleared to work, you can apply for UI benefits.

•Oh that makes sense. I was thinking they were mutually exclusive forever.

ugh the whole system is so confusing!! i was on workers comp and then tried to get unemployment and it was a nightmare. took months to sort out

•That sounds frustrating. Were there specific issues with your claim?

•they kept asking for more paperwork and nobody could explain what was happening with my case

One important thing to note - your benefit amount will be based on wages from your base period, which typically looks at the first 4 of the last 5 completed quarters before you file. Since you were working before your disability started, those wages should count.

•That's good to know. I was worried they might not count wages from before my disability period.

•Actually, that's not always true. Sometimes Washington ESD uses an alternate base period if the regular one doesn't qualify you. The system is more flexible than people think.

File as soon as your disability ends! Don't wait because there's usually a waiting period before benefits start anyway. Better to get in the queue early.

•Good advice. I'll start gathering my paperwork now so I'm ready to file right away.

•Yeah, and make sure you have your employer information handy. Washington ESD will need details about your last job even though it was eliminated.

If you run into issues getting through to Washington ESD during the process, I really recommend trying Claimyr. I was stuck in adjudication hell for weeks and couldn't reach anyone. Their callback service got me connected to an actual human who could explain what was happening with my claim.

•How much does that cost? I'm already tight on money.

•It's worth it when you consider how much time you'd spend calling on your own. Plus they actually get you through to someone who can help resolve your claim issues.

I hate that we even need services like that to reach our own state agencies. The whole Washington ESD phone system is broken.

•Right?? I spent literally hours trying to get through last month. It's ridiculous.

•At least there are workarounds now. Better than being completely stuck.

Just to be clear - when you file, make sure you answer all questions honestly about your disability period. Washington ESD will likely verify everything anyway, so transparency is key.

•Definitely planning to be completely upfront about everything. Don't want any complications down the road.

•Smart approach. They have access to a lot of databases now so trying to hide anything usually backfires.

my cousin went through this exact situation and got approved but it took forever because they had to review all her medical stuff

The medical review is standard procedure when transitioning from disability to unemployment. Washington ESD wants to ensure you're genuinely able to work and not just trying to continue receiving benefits in a different form.

•That makes sense from their perspective. They probably see people trying to game the system all the time.

Lola Perez
•Exactly. The key is having proper medical documentation showing you're cleared for work and actively job searching.

Don't forget about the job search requirement! You need to start looking immediately when you file, not after you get approved. I made that mistake and almost lost my benefits.

•Thanks for the reminder. I'll start my job search activities right when I file my claim.

•Good plan. And keep detailed records of everything - dates, companies, contacts, etc.

One more thing - if your claim gets denied initially don't panic. You can appeal and often win if you have proper documentation. The initial reviewers sometimes miss important details.

•Good to know there's an appeal process if needed. Hopefully it won't come to that.

•The appeal process is actually pretty straightforward if you have your documentation organized.

Just wanted to follow up on the Claimyr thing - I used it again recently when I had questions about my work search requirements and got connected within minutes. Really saves the headache of trying to call Washington ESD directly.

•Do they help with all types of unemployment questions or just claim issues?

•They help you reach the right Washington ESD department for whatever your issue is. Work search, claim status, appeals, whatever you need.
