Tried every trick to reach ESD on the phone - always busy signals. Any ACTUAL way to talk to someone?

I'm at my wit's end trying to get through to ESD. I've been calling for TWO WEEKS straight at all hours - 8:01am right when they open, 11:30am thinking it's during lunch, 4:45pm right before they close. ALWAYS the same recording about high call volume then it hangs up! I've tried every number I can find online. I have a simple question about my standby status that I can't resolve on eServices, and the automated system is useless for my specific situation. Has anyone successfully gotten through to a live person lately? What's the secret trick? Did you use some special phone number? I'm starting to think the whole "call center" is just a recording and no actual humans work there...

ur doing it wrong lol. U gotta call EXACTLY at 7:59am and keep hitting redial. Sometimes works for me but yeah its trash. The whole ESD system is broken AF

I literally set an alarm for 7:55am and started dialing at 7:58 hitting redial constantly until 8:30. Still nothing but busy signals.

Have you tried the technical support line instead of the claims line? Sometimes that one has shorter wait times, then you can ask them to transfer you to claims. Also, Thursdays seem to be slightly better in my experience - I got through last month after "only" 45 minutes of redialing.

Thanks for the tip! I'll try the tech support angle tomorrow (Thursday). What's that specific number if you have it handy?

The technical support line is 855-682-0785. Just be prepared that they might tell you they can't help with claim questions, but if you're polite sometimes they'll transfer you rather than making you call back.

I was in the exact same situation last month with my claim stuck in adjudication. After weeks of trying to call with no success, I discovered a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually got me through to an ESD agent in under 25 minutes. They have this system that keeps dialing for you until they get through, then they call you back when they have an agent on the line. They have a video demo showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 It was seriously the only way I was able to get my standby status question resolved. The agent I spoke with even commented on how impossible it is to get through right now because they're short-staffed.

is that service legit? sounds sketchy to give some random website my claim info..

They don't ask for any claim info - they just need your phone number to call you back when they get through to ESD. I was skeptical too but it actually worked for me when nothing else did.

ESD phone representative here. I know this is incredibly frustrating, and you're right that our lines are overwhelmed. Here are some insider tips that might help: 1. Our lowest call volume is typically Wednesday afternoons between 2-3pm 2. Have you tried using the eServices message center? Responses are usually within 5-7 business days 3. For standby status questions specifically, you can email the dedicated address: standby@esd.wa.gov 4. If your question is about job search requirements while on standby, check your current status on eServices under "Claim Status" - it will show if you're exempt from job search If you provide a bit more detail about your standby question, I might be able to help without you needing to call in at all.

Wait do ESD reps actually monitor these forums??? I've been struggling for MONTHS to get answers!!

We don't officially monitor forums, but some of us try to help where we can during off-hours. The email route is still your best bet for documented responses.

THANK YOU for responding! My question is that I was approved for standby initially for 4 weeks since I work in construction and we have a temporary layoff. My standby period ends next week, but my employer just told me the project is delayed another 3 weeks. How do I get the standby period extended? There's no option for that in eServices that I can find.

For standby extensions, your employer needs to submit the request through their eServices account. They should go to "Employer Functions" then "Request Standby Extension" and enter your information. They'll need your SSN and claim ID. They must submit this BEFORE your current standby period ends or you'll need to start completing job searches. The system will automatically notify you once it's processed.

AM I THE ONLY ONE WHO THINKS THIS IS RIDICULOUS??? We pay taxes our whole lives and when we need help we can't even talk to a human?!! I spent FOUR DAYS trying to reach someone about my adjudication last month. FOUR DAYS!!! This system is DESIGNED to make people give up!!! 😡😡😡

It's definitely frustrating, but I don't think it's intentionally designed that way. They're just severely understaffed compared to the volume of claims. When I finally got through, the agent told me they're handling triple their normal call volume with fewer staff than pre-pandemic.

I had the same issue and what worked for me was contacting my state representative. I emailed my district rep explaining the situation and how I couldn't get through on the phones, and their office contacted ESD on my behalf. Got a call back from an ESD supervisor within 2 days. Worth trying if nothing else works!

That's a great idea I hadn't considered. How do I find out who my state representative is?

You can look it up here: https://app.leg.wa.gov/DistrictFinder/ - just enter your address and it will show your representatives. Email all of them explaining your situation. They have constituent services staff whose job is helping with exactly this kind of issue.

pro tip: hit 4 then 2 then 1 then 3 in the phone menu. gets u to a different queue. worked for me last time

I'll try that sequence tomorrow! At this point I'm willing to try anything.

Just to follow up - did you get your standby issue resolved? If your employer has submitted the extension request, you should be able to see the updated standby end date in your eServices account under "Summary of Current Claim." If it's been more than 48 hours since they submitted it and you don't see the update, that would be a valid reason to call in as it might indicate a system issue.

Thanks for checking back! I contacted my employer's HR department and they submitted the extension request yesterday. The standby date updated in my account this morning! Saved me hours of phone calls. Really appreciate the help from everyone here.
