Quit my job for better opportunity - am I eligible for Washington ESD unemployment benefits?
I left my retail job last month because I got offered a position at another company that seemed like a much better fit. The new job was supposed to start three weeks ago but they suddenly pulled the offer due to 'budget constraints.' Now I'm scrambling to find work and wondering if I can file for unemployment since I technically quit my last job voluntarily. Does Washington ESD consider this good cause? I'm really stressed about my bills piling up and not sure what options I have.

Unfortunately, quitting voluntarily usually disqualifies you from unemployment benefits in Washington. The ESD has strict rules about this - you generally need to be laid off or fired through no fault of your own. There are some exceptions for good cause, but having another job offer that fell through typically doesn't qualify.

•That's what I was afraid of. I should have waited until I actually started the new job before quitting. Live and learn I guess.

•Wait, there might be exceptions depending on the circumstances. Did you have anything in writing about the job offer?

You should still apply anyway! The worst they can do is deny you, but sometimes there are circumstances they consider. I've heard of people getting approved even after quitting if they can prove good cause. The application process will walk you through all the questions about why you left your job.

•Really? I thought it was pretty black and white. Maybe I'll give it a try then.

•True, but the bar for 'good cause' is pretty high. Just don't want them to get their hopes up too much.

I had a similar situation last year and got stuck in adjudication hell for weeks trying to prove my case. Couldn't get through to anyone at Washington ESD no matter how many times I called. Finally used Claimyr to get connected to an actual agent who could review my case properly. Check out claimyr.com - they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows exactly how it works.

•Never heard of that before. Did it actually help you get through to someone?

•Yeah, got connected within like 20 minutes instead of calling for hours and getting nowhere. Worth it just for the peace of mind of talking to a real person.

•How much does something like that cost though? I'm already strapped for cash.

ugh the whole system is so messed up. I got denied for quitting even though my boss was harassing me constantly. Had to go through the whole appeals process and everything. Took MONTHS to get resolved.

Jenna Sloan
•That sounds awful. Did you eventually win your appeal?

•yeah but it was a nightmare. had to get witness statements and everything. if you have documentation about the job offer that might help though

To clarify the good cause exceptions - Washington ESD recognizes things like unsafe working conditions, harassment, domestic violence situations, or significant changes to your job duties or pay. A job offer that fell through unfortunately doesn't typically qualify, but as others said, you can always apply and see what happens during the adjudication process.

•What about if you quit to care for a sick family member? Does that count as good cause?
0 coins
Christian Burns
•Yes, that can qualify under certain circumstances. You'd need to provide documentation though.

Actually, if you can prove you had a legitimate job offer that was rescinded, there might be an argument for good cause. Did you have a written offer letter or any email correspondence about the position? The key is documenting that you made a reasonable decision based on concrete information.

Jenna Sloan
•I do have the original offer email and the one where they rescinded it. Think that would be enough?

•It's worth including in your application for sure. Can't hurt to have that documentation ready.

File anyway!!! I quit my job and thought I had no chance but turns out my situation qualified. The adjudication process will review all the details. Better to try and get denied than not try at all.

•What was your situation if you don't mind me asking?

•Boss kept changing my schedule with no notice and I had childcare issues. Took forever to get approved though.

The waiting period is going to kill you either way. Even if you get approved, it takes weeks to get your first payment. Start applying for jobs immediately and consider temp work to bridge the gap.

•Yeah I've been applying everywhere. Just worried about making rent next month.

•Check with local food banks and assistance programs too. Many have emergency help for situations like this.

I'm confused about something - if you quit voluntarily, don't you automatically get disqualified? I thought that was like the main rule with unemployment.
0 coins
Christian Burns
•Generally yes, but there are exceptions for 'good cause' which is why people are suggesting they still apply.

Drew Hathaway
•Oh ok, I didn't realize there were exceptions. Thanks for clarifying.

Whatever you do, be completely honest on your application. If they find out you lied about anything, you'll be in way worse trouble than just being denied. Tell them exactly what happened with the job offer falling through.

Jenna Sloan
•Definitely planning to be honest. Not worth the risk of making things worse.

Vanessa Figueroa
•yeah they investigate everything during adjudication anyway so lying just makes you look bad

When I was in a similar bind last year, I used that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. Actually got to speak with an ESD agent who explained exactly what documentation I needed for my appeal. Way better than sitting on hold for hours just to get disconnected.

•Starting to think that might be worth looking into. The regular phone lines seem impossible.

•That's exactly why I recommended it earlier. Sometimes you just need to talk to a human who can look at your specific situation.

File the claim online through the ESD website. Even if you get initially denied, you have the right to appeal. The appeals process gives you a chance to present your case in detail, including all that documentation about the job offer.

Jenna Sloan
•How long does the appeals process typically take?

Dominique Adams
•Usually 4-8 weeks depending on their backlog. But you can request an expedited hearing if you're facing financial hardship.

Same thing happened to my cousin except her new job lasted exactly one day before they let her go. She was able to get unemployment because she could prove the job offer was legitimate and she left in good faith. Your situation might be similar.

Jenna Sloan
•That gives me some hope. At least I have the email trail showing the offer was real.

Sasha Reese
•Exactly! That documentation could make all the difference in your case.

Don't forget about WorkSource requirements if you do get approved. You'll need to register and do job search activities every week. Better to get registered now even before you know if your claim is approved.

Jenna Sloan
•Good point. I'll look into that registration process.

Louisa Ramirez
•Yeah, it's better to be ahead of the game on all the requirements rather than scrambling later.

The ESD customer service is absolutely terrible right now. I've been trying to get through about my own claim for weeks. Maybe I should try that Claimyr thing too since nothing else is working.

•It's definitely worth trying if you're stuck. Way less frustrating than the regular phone system.

•Yeah at this point I'm willing to try anything. Thanks for the suggestion.

Make sure you file your weekly claims even if your initial claim is pending or denied. If you eventually get approved through appeals, you'll want those weeks documented. Missing weekly claims can mess up your benefit timeline.

Jenna Sloan
•Wait, I can file weekly claims even before my initial claim is approved?
0 coins
Angel Campbell
•Yes, you should continue filing weekly claims during the adjudication process. It maintains your place in line for benefits.

honestly the whole thing is a gamble. my friend quit her toxic job and got approved, but my neighbor quit for almost the same reason and got denied. seems like it depends on which adjudicator reviews your case and what mood they're in that day

•It's more about having proper documentation and meeting the specific legal requirements, but I understand why it seems inconsistent from the outside.

•maybe but it sure feels random when you're going through it

Look into temporary assistance programs while you're waiting for this to get resolved. United Way has resources for emergency help with utilities and rent. Don't wait until you're completely broke to ask for help.

Jenna Sloan
•That's really good advice. I'll look into what's available in my area.

•Also check with your former employer's HR department. Sometimes they have resources or can provide documentation that helps with your claim.

Just wanted to follow up - did you end up filing the claim? Really curious how this turns out since I'm in a somewhat similar situation myself.

•Yeah I filed it yesterday. Now I'm just waiting to see what happens during adjudication. Will definitely update the thread when I hear something.
