Missed WorkSource appointment - now disqualified for one week only?

I completely messed up and missed my mandatory WorkSource follow-up call scheduled for January 15th. I immediately tried to fix it by calling my WorkSource specialist the very next day (Jan 16th) and left THREE voicemails! I also sent a follow-up email yesterday explaining why I needed to reschedule. Finally heard back today and was told I'm outside the "reschedule window" - apparently you can only reschedule if you contact them THE DAY BEFORE or THE SAME DAY as the missed appointment. Like seriously? That's such a tight window! Here's where I'm confused though - the specialist said I should keep filing weekly claims going forward since my disqualification notice specifically mentions I'm only disqualified for THIS week's benefits. Does this mean I'll still get unemployment for upcoming weeks? Or is my entire claim permanently messed up now? Has anyone dealt with this WorkSource appointment issue before? I really can't afford to lose all my benefits over one missed phone call. 😫

same EXACT thing happened to me last month!!! missed my appt bc my kid was sick and i had to take him to urgent care. the disqualification should ONLY be for that one week. keep filing ur weekly claims and you'll get benefits again for next week. ESD is crazy strict abt these worksource things

Thanks for sharing your experience! So you actually did get paid for the weeks after your disqualification? Did they make you schedule another WorkSource appointment or did they just let you continue with your regular claim process?

Based on what you've described, your situation is what ESD calls a "single week disqualification" due to a WorkSource non-compliance issue. This means: 1. You will not receive benefits for the week in which you missed the appointment 2. You should absolutely continue filing your weekly claims 3. Benefits should resume for the following week (assuming you meet all other eligibility requirements) The key here is to not miss ANY future WorkSource appointments, as multiple compliance issues can lead to longer disqualification periods or even claim cancellation. Make sure you've added their contact information to your phone and set multiple reminders for future appointments. If you want to double-check your status, you can always call ESD directly to confirm exactly when your benefits will resume.

This is so helpful, thank you! I'll definitely be more careful about future appointments. Do you know if I need to schedule another WorkSource appointment to replace the one I missed, or will they contact me to set up a new one?

You should reach out to your WorkSource specialist and ask them to schedule a new appointment. Don't wait for them to contact you - taking initiative shows good faith compliance with the program requirements. Document this contact attempt as well, just to protect yourself.

This advice is spot-on! I work with ppl who have UI claims all the time. The single-week disqualification is WAY better than a full disqualificaiton. Just dont miss another one!!!!! ESD is looking 4 any reason to deny benefits these days 🙄

i missed 2 appointments in a row once and ended up COMPLETELY disqualified for like a month until i appealed. take this seriously! one missed appointment isnt the end of the world but don't make it a habit!

Oh no, that sounds awful! Did you have to go through a formal appeal process? How long did that take to resolve?

yea had to file a formal appeal with OAH (Office of Administrative Hearings) and had a phone hearing with a judge! took about 5 weeks to get resolved and i won but it was STRESSFUL

If you're having trouble getting through to your WorkSource specialist again, I'd recommend using Claimyr to connect with ESD directly. I was in a similar situation with missed appointments and needed clarification on my claim status. Spent days trying to get through using the regular number. Used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got connected to an actual ESD agent within 25 minutes - they were able to confirm my claim status and tell me exactly when my benefits would resume. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. Seriously saved me so much frustration when I was worried about my benefits.

does that service actually work? seems too good to be true with how impossible it is to reach ESD these days

I HATE how they treat us like children with these mandatory WorkSource appointments!!! I've been working for 22 YEARS and suddenly I need someone to teach me how to find a job?? And then they disqualify you over a PHONE CALL? The whole system is designed to discourage people from collecting benefits they're ENTITLED TO. They don't care that we paid into this system our entire working lives. And btw anyone notice how they're SUPER QUICK to disqualify you but take FOREVER to process appeals or fix their own mistakes?? 🤬

While I understand your frustration, the WorkSource requirements are actually designed to help people find employment faster. Research shows that structured job search assistance programs reduce unemployment duration by an average of 2-3 weeks. The appointments are mandatory because federal funding requires states to implement these programs to receive UI funding.

Thanks everyone for the advice! I just contacted my WorkSource specialist again and requested a new appointment. They scheduled me for next Wednesday and confirmed that as long as I attend that one, I should only lose this one week of benefits. Definitely setting multiple calendar reminders this time!

Excellent! Make sure you keep documentation of this new appointment (confirmation email, etc.) just in case there are any questions later. And continue filing your weekly claims without interruption, even for the week you won't be paid.

does anybody know if attending an in-person workshop at WorkSource counts the same as the individual appointments? i'm trying to get ahead of my requirements lol

It depends on your specific WorkSource requirements. Some claimants are required to attend both workshops AND individual appointments. Others may be able to substitute workshop attendance for an individual appointment. I recommend asking your WorkSource specialist directly so you'll know exactly what's required for your specific situation.

Just wanted to add that if you're still having trouble reaching your WorkSource specialist, you can also try logging into your WorkSource account online to see if there are any available self-service options for rescheduling. Some locations allow you to reschedule through the portal without having to play phone tag. Also, if you have any documentation about why you missed the original appointment (like medical records if you were sick), it might be worth mentioning that when you attend your new appointment - sometimes they'll make a note in your file that could help if there are ever future scheduling conflicts.
