Is Washington ESD unemployment affected by government shutdown - still processing claims?
With all the talk about potential government shutdowns, I'm worried about my unemployment benefits. I just started receiving Washington ESD payments last month and I'm supposed to file my weekly claim this Sunday. Does anyone know if unemployment gets affected when there's a federal government shutdown? Will Washington ESD still process our claims and send payments? I can't afford to miss any payments right now.

Washington ESD is a state agency, not federal, so it should continue operating during a federal shutdown. Your weekly claims should still be processed normally. The funding for regular unemployment insurance comes from state and employer contributions, not federal appropriations.

•That's such a relief! I was panicking thinking I might not get paid next week.

•wait but don't some unemployment programs get federal money? like what about extended benefits?

I've been through a few shutdowns while on unemployment and never had an issue with Washington ESD payments. State unemployment systems are separate from federal operations. Your biggest concern should be making sure you file your weekly claims on time, not the shutdown.

•Good to know! I was about to call Washington ESD to ask but figured their phones would be even busier than usual.

•Actually if you need to reach Washington ESD agents, I found this service called Claimyr that helps you get through their phone system. Check out claimyr.com - they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Way better than trying to call on your own.

The only unemployment programs that might be affected are federal extensions like Extended Benefits, but those are pretty rare anyway. Regular Washington ESD unemployment insurance runs independently of federal shutdowns.

•What about people who work for federal agencies and get laid off during shutdowns? Do they qualify for unemployment?

•Yes, federal employees can file for unemployment during furloughs, but it gets complicated if they receive back pay later. Washington ESD has specific procedures for federal worker claims.

I'm more worried about the job search requirements during a shutdown. If federal agencies aren't hiring and government contractors are laying people off, are we still expected to apply to the same number of jobs each week?

•Washington ESD doesn't typically adjust job search requirements for shutdowns. You still need to complete your required job contacts each week, but you can expand your search to private sector opportunities.

•That seems unfair when a big chunk of available jobs disappear overnight because of political games in DC.

Been getting unemployment for 4 months now and honestly Washington ESD barely works properly on a good day, let alone during government drama. Half the time their website crashes when I try to file my weekly claim.

•LOL so true! I've had better luck calling them directly but even that's a nightmare with their phone system.

•If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD, there's a service that helps with that. I used Claimyr last month when I needed to talk to someone about my adjudication delay. Way easier than spending hours on hold.

Just to clarify - are you talking about a federal shutdown or a state shutdown? Because if Washington state government shuts down, that would definitely affect Washington ESD operations and your benefits.

•I was thinking about the federal shutdown stuff I keep seeing in the news. Didn't even consider that states could shut down too!

•State shutdowns are much rarer but they do happen. During a state shutdown, Washington ESD would likely have limited operations since it's a core service, but payments might be delayed.

I work for a government contractor and we're already getting notices about potential layoffs if there's a shutdown. Planning to file for unemployment immediately if it happens. Good to know Washington ESD will still be running.

•Make sure you file as soon as you get laid off! There's usually a waiting week before benefits start.

•Actually Washington eliminated the waiting week a few years ago. You can get paid for your first week of unemployment now.

This whole situation is ridiculous. People are already struggling and now we have to worry about whether the government will function long enough to keep essential services running.

•At least unemployment is handled at the state level. Can't imagine the chaos if Washington ESD shut down every time Congress can't agree on a budget.

•Don't give them any ideas! The last thing we need is more bureaucratic complications with unemployment benefits.

For what it's worth, I called Washington ESD yesterday about something else and the agent confirmed that their operations continue during federal shutdowns. She said they get this question a lot during shutdown threats.

•How did you manage to get through to an actual person? I've been trying for weeks!

•I used that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. Worth every penny to skip the hold time and actually talk to someone at Washington ESD.

The real question is whether WorkSource offices stay open during shutdowns. Some of those have federal funding and might close, which could make it harder to meet job search requirements.

•Good point! I use WorkSource for job search activities. Would hate to lose access to their computers and job posting system.

•WorkSource WA locations might have reduced services during federal shutdowns since they receive some federal workforce funding. But Washington ESD accepts online job search activities too, so you have alternatives.

thanks everyone this makes me feel much better about filing my weekly claim on Sunday. Was honestly considering skipping it thinking the system might be down.

•Never skip filing your weekly claim! That's the fastest way to mess up your benefits. Always file even if you're not sure.

•Exactly! Missing a weekly claim filing can cause all sorts of problems with Washington ESD. Better to file and have it rejected than not file at all.
