How to transfer Washington ESD unemployment benefits to bank account instead of debit card

I've been getting my unemployment payments on the ReliaCard debit card but I'm tired of the ATM fees and want to switch to direct deposit to my actual bank account. I can't figure out how to change this in my Washington ESD account. When I log into SecureAccess Washington (SAW) I see my payment history but no option to update my payment method. Has anyone successfully switched from the debit card to direct deposit? What's the process?

You need to go to the 'Payment Options' section in your Washington ESD online account. It's not super obvious where it is - look for 'Manage Payment Method' or something similar. You'll need your bank routing number and account number to set up direct deposit.

I've looked everywhere in my account and can't find anything called 'Payment Options' or 'Manage Payment Method'. Are you sure it's there?

0 coins

It might be under a different menu. Try looking in the 'Account Settings' or 'Profile' section. Sometimes these government websites hide things in weird places.

I had the same problem and spent hours trying to find it online. Finally called Washington ESD and they told me you have to request a direct deposit form by phone or mail. The online system doesn't let you change it yourself for some reason.

0 coins

Ugh, of course it's not that simple. How long did it take you to get through when you called?

0 coins

That's the thing - I never got through. Kept getting busy signals or hung up on after waiting for like an hour. I ended up just sticking with the card.

If you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD by phone, I recently found out about this service called Claimyr that helps you get through to actual agents. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Way better than sitting on hold forever.

Wait, I thought all unemployment payments automatically go to direct deposit now? I set mine up when I first filed my claim and never had to deal with the debit card thing.

0 coins

You probably set it up during your initial application. I think I skipped that part or missed it somehow, so I got stuck with the ReliaCard.

0 coins

No, the debit card is still the default. You have to specifically request direct deposit, and apparently it's not easy to change once you're already getting payments on the card.

0 coins

The ReliaCard fees are ridiculous! I'm paying like $3 every time I want to get cash and there's only one fee-free ATM in my entire town.

0 coins

You can use it at any bank teller for free cash withdrawals, just FYI. Most people don't know that.

0 coins

Really? I had no idea. That's actually helpful, thanks!

Update: I found the form! It's called 'Request for Direct Deposit of Unemployment Benefits' form. You can download it from the Washington ESD website under Forms & Publications. Fill it out and mail it in with a voided check.

0 coins

Thank you! I'll look for that form right now. How long did it take for the change to go into effect after you mailed it?

0 coins

I haven't actually done it yet, just found the form. But it says to allow 2-3 weeks for processing.

0 coins

honestly the debit card isnt that bad if you use it right. i just buy everything with it instead of getting cash out. no fees that way

0 coins

That's true but I prefer having everything in my main bank account so I can track my budget better.

0 coins

Some places don't take debit cards or charge extra fees for using them. Direct deposit is just more convenient overall.

For anyone still struggling to get through to Washington ESD about this, I used Claimyr last week and actually got connected to a real person within 20 minutes. They walked me through the direct deposit process over the phone and sent me the form via email. Way easier than trying to navigate their website or waiting on hold forever.

0 coins

How much does that service cost? I'm already tight on money because of the unemployment situation.

0 coins

It's worth checking out their website at claimyr.com to see the current pricing. For me, the time saved was worth it, but I understand everyone's situation is different.

I work at a bank and we see this issue all the time. The Washington ESD direct deposit form is definitely the way to go. Make sure you use a voided check and not just write down your account info - they're very particular about that.

0 coins

Good tip about the voided check. I almost would have just written the numbers down.

0 coins

What if you don't have checks? Can you get a deposit slip from the bank instead?

0 coins

Yes, most banks can print you a direct deposit form or letter with your routing and account numbers. Just ask them for something official with your account info for direct deposit setup.

0 coins

Why is everything with Washington ESD so complicated? Every other government agency I've dealt with lets you update your payment info online.

0 coins

Right? The IRS lets you change your direct deposit info online for tax refunds, but unemployment makes you mail a form like it's 1995.

0 coins

I think it's a security thing. They're paranoid about fraud so they make everything harder than it needs to be.

0 coins

Just successfully switched to direct deposit last month! The process took exactly 3 weeks from when I mailed the form to when my payment showed up in my bank account instead of on the ReliaCard. Make sure to keep using the card for any payments that come through during the transition period.

0 coins

That's really helpful to know! Did you have to do anything special to activate it or did it just automatically switch over?

0 coins

It switched automatically. I got an email confirmation from Washington ESD saying the change was processed, then the next payment went to my bank account.

Update: I finally got through to Washington ESD using that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. Took about 15 minutes and the agent was actually really helpful. She confirmed that you need to mail the direct deposit form and said they're working on adding the option to change payment methods online, but no timeline for when that'll be available.

0 coins

Great to hear you got through! I'm definitely going to try Claimyr if I can't get the form to work.

0 coins

Glad it worked out for you! Their service really does make dealing with Washington ESD so much easier.

0 coins

For anyone who's worried about mailing the form - I sent mine certified mail with tracking so I'd know Washington ESD received it. Cost a few extra dollars but gave me peace of mind.

0 coins

Smart idea. I'll probably do the same thing just to be sure.

0 coins

That's actually really good advice. Government agencies lose paperwork all the time, so having proof of delivery is important.

0 coins

Does anyone know if switching to direct deposit affects how quickly you get paid? I usually get my ReliaCard loaded pretty early on payment day.

0 coins

In my experience, direct deposit actually comes through a day earlier than the card usually gets loaded. Bank transfers happen faster than updating the debit card system.

0 coins

That matches what I've heard from other people too. Direct deposit is usually faster.

0 coins

I've been putting off switching because I was worried about missing payments during the transition, but sounds like it's pretty straightforward. Going to download that form today.

0 coins

Same here! This thread convinced me to just go ahead and do it.

0 coins

You won't miss any payments. They keep the card active until the direct deposit kicks in, so there's no gap.

0 coins

thanks everyone for the info. gonna try calling first before mailing the form just in case they can do it over the phone

0 coins

Good luck getting through! If you can't reach them the regular way, definitely try Claimyr. Made all the difference for me.

0 coins

Let us know how it goes! I'm curious if they can actually set it up over the phone or if they always make you mail the form.

0 coins

Final update from me - I got my direct deposit set up through the phone call I made via Claimyr. The agent was able to take my banking info over the phone and set it up immediately. First direct deposit hit my account this week instead of going to the ReliaCard. So much easier than dealing with those ATM fees!

0 coins

That's awesome! I'm definitely going to try calling them through Claimyr rather than mailing the form. Thanks for all the updates!

0 coins

Wait, so you didn't have to mail anything? They just did it over the phone?

0 coins

Correct! The agent took my routing and account numbers over the phone and set it up in their system. Much faster than the mail-in form process.

0 coins

This whole thread has been super helpful. I had no idea so many people were having the same issue with the ReliaCard fees. Going to look into switching to direct deposit ASAP.

0 coins

Glad it helped! I learned a lot from everyone's responses too.

0 coins

Yeah, it's crazy how many people are dealing with this but Washington ESD doesn't make the solution very obvious.

0 coins

One more tip - if you're switching to direct deposit, make sure your bank account is in good standing. Some banks will reject the deposits if you have any holds or issues with your account.

0 coins

Good point. I'll double-check with my bank before I submit the request.

0 coins

Yes, and make sure the account has been open for at least 30 days. Some banks have restrictions on new accounts receiving government direct deposits.

0 coins

Thanks everyone for all the help! I'm going to try calling Washington ESD through Claimyr first, and if that doesn't work I'll mail the form. Really appreciate all the advice and tips.

0 coins

You're welcome! Hope it works out as smoothly for you as it did for me.

0 coins

Good luck! Either way should work, but the phone method is definitely faster if you can get through.
