How soon can you get unemployment after being fired from Washington ESD job?
Got terminated from my retail job yesterday for attendance issues (called in sick 3 times in 6 weeks). Manager said it was job abandonment but I have doctor notes for 2 of those days. Already applied on the Washington ESD website this morning but wondering how long before I can expect any payments? I've got rent due in 2 weeks and really need to know the timeline for getting approved. Anyone know how fast Washington ESD processes new claims these days?

The waiting period in Washington is typically one week from when you file your initial claim. But if they're questioning the termination reason, it could go into adjudication which takes much longer - sometimes 4-6 weeks depending on their backlog.

•4-6 weeks?? That's way too long, I can't wait that long for money. Is there any way to speed this up?

•Unfortunately not much you can do to speed up adjudication. Make sure you have all your documentation ready in case they request it.

Since you mentioned doctor notes, make sure you upload those to your SecureAccess Washington account ASAP. Attendance issues can be tricky - if you had legitimate medical reasons, you might have a good case. The adjudication team will review everything to determine if the termination disqualifies you from benefits.

•Where exactly do I upload documents? I logged into SAW but don't see an obvious place for attachments.

•Look for 'Upload Documents' or 'Correspondence' section in your account. Sometimes it's under the claim details page.

I was fired last month for similar reasons and mine went straight to adjudication. Took forever to get through to anyone at Washington ESD to check the status. Finally used claimyr.com to get connected to an actual agent who explained what was happening with my claim. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of trying to call.

•Is that service legit? How much does it cost to use claimyr?

•Yeah it's real. They don't mention pricing upfront but it was worth it to actually talk to someone at Washington ESD instead of getting hung up on repeatedly.

•I've heard of claimyr too but haven't tried it yet. Might be worth it if you're really stuck.

The system is completely broken. They fire you for having the flu then make you wait weeks just to see if you qualify for benefits you've been paying into for years. Makes no sense.

•Tell me about it. I waited 8 weeks for my adjudication decision last year.

•8 weeks?! How did you survive that long without income?

The key thing to understand is that Washington ESD has to determine if your termination was for 'misconduct.' Attendance issues can go either way depending on your employer's policies and whether you followed proper procedures for reporting absences. Having medical documentation definitely helps your case.

•What exactly counts as misconduct? I wasn't stealing or anything, just got sick a few times.

Alina Rosenthal
•Misconduct usually means willful violations of company policy. Being sick with documentation shouldn't count, but excessive unexcused absences might.

same thing happened to me but I got approved pretty quickly. think it depends on how your employer reports the termination reason to Washington ESD

•How long did yours take? Was it like a week or more?

•maybe 10 days total from filing to first payment. but that was before they had all these backlogs

Don't forget you still need to file your weekly claims even while waiting for the adjudication decision. Many people miss this step and it can delay their benefits even further once they're approved. Set a reminder for the same day each week.

•Good point, I almost forgot about that. So I file weekly claims even if I'm not getting paid yet?

Finnegan Gunn
•Exactly. You're basically holding your place in line. If you skip weeks, you might lose those benefit weeks entirely.

•This is super important advice. I lost 3 weeks of benefits because I thought I didn't need to file weekly claims during adjudication.

The whole process is a nightmare when you're already stressed about money. I remember calling Washington ESD dozens of times before getting through to anyone. Eventually found out about claimyr and wish I'd known about it sooner - would have saved me so much frustration.

•I'm definitely going to look into that claimyr thing if I can't get through normally. These phone lines are impossible.

Ashley Simian
•Yeah, the regular phone system is basically useless. You'll just get disconnected after waiting forever.

Make sure you're looking for work and documenting it properly from day one. Washington ESD requires job search activities and they can audit your log at any time. Even if you're waiting for adjudication, you still need to meet the work search requirements.

•How many jobs do I need to apply to each week? I saw something about 3 but wasn't sure.

Savannah Glover
•It's 3 job search activities per week. Can be applications, networking, job fairs, etc. Keep detailed records with dates and contact info.

The timing really depends on your specific situation and how busy Washington ESD is. When I filed, it took about 3 weeks total but that included a brief adjudication period. Having all your paperwork organized definitely helps speed things up.

•What kind of paperwork should I gather? I have the doctor notes but what else?

•Employment history, any written warnings you received, your final paycheck stub, termination letter if you got one.

ugh this brings back bad memories from when I got fired two years ago. took FOREVER to get my first payment and I was living off credit cards. the stress was unreal

Mohammad Khaled
•That's exactly what I'm worried about. How long is forever in Washington ESD time?

•like 6 weeks total but felt like eternity when you're broke

One thing that might help is checking if your employer contests your claim. You should receive a notice if they do, and that's usually what triggers a longer adjudication process. If they don't contest it and your termination reason seems straightforward, you might get approved faster.

Mohammad Khaled
•How would I know if they contest it? Will Washington ESD tell me?

Finnegan Gunn
•Yes, you'll get a notice in your account and possibly by mail if your employer responds to dispute your claim.

•My employer contested mine and it added like 3 extra weeks to the process. Hopefully yours doesn't fight it.

Another thing - if you do end up needing to talk to Washington ESD about your claim status, seriously consider using claimyr. I was skeptical at first but it actually works. Got connected to an agent in like 15 minutes instead of spending all day redialing busy signals.

•I used claimyr last month too and it was a lifesaver. Wish I'd known about it sooner during my first unemployment claim.

The whole system is designed to make you give up and stop trying to collect benefits. They make it as difficult as possible on purpose. Don't let them wear you down - keep fighting for what you're owed.

Mohammad Khaled
•I'm definitely not giving up but it's frustrating when you need money NOW and they take forever to decide.
0 coins
Oliver Cheng
•Exactly. They know people are desperate and hope you'll just disappear if they make it hard enough.

Pro tip: screenshot everything in your Washington ESD account regularly. Sometimes the system glitches and information disappears. Having screenshots saved me when I had to appeal a decision.

Mohammad Khaled
•Good advice! I'll start doing that. The last thing I need is to lose important information.

•Yeah, their system is pretty unreliable. Better safe than sorry with documentation.

btw make sure you file your weekly claim every week on the same day. I usually do mine on Sunday mornings so I don't forget

Mohammad Khaled
•That's a good system. I think I'll do mine on Sundays too since that's when I have time to focus on it.

The attendance issue might not be as bad as you think if you have medical documentation. I've seen people get approved even after being fired for attendance when they had legitimate health reasons. Just be honest about everything and provide all the documentation you can.
0 coins
Mohammad Khaled
•Thanks, that gives me some hope. I was worried that being fired automatically disqualifies you.
0 coins
Adrian Connor
•Nope, not automatically. It really depends on the circumstances and whether Washington ESD considers it misconduct.

•My friend got approved after being fired for attendance issues. Had medical documentation like you do. Took about a month total.

Keep checking your account daily for updates. Sometimes they ask for additional information and you only have a limited time to respond. Missing those deadlines can really delay your claim.
0 coins
Mohammad Khaled
•How often do they usually ask for more information? I already uploaded my doctor notes.
0 coins
Ryder Everingham
•It varies. Sometimes they want statements from you or your employer, sometimes additional documentation. Just stay on top of your account.

Hang in there. I know it's stressful waiting for the decision when you need money for bills. Most people do eventually get approved, especially when they have documentation like you do. The process just takes longer than it should.

•I totally understand. The uncertainty is almost worse than the financial stress. Just try to stay patient and keep following up.
