How soon can you apply for unemployment after being fired in Washington?
Got terminated from my warehouse job yesterday and I'm honestly panicking about bills. My supervisor said it was due to performance issues but I feel like they just didn't want to deal with training me properly. Anyway, can I file for unemployment benefits immediately or do I need to wait? I've never been fired before so I have no idea how this works with Washington ESD. Really need to know if there's a waiting period or something.

You can apply right away - there's no waiting period to file your initial claim with Washington ESD. The sooner you apply, the better because your benefit year starts from when you file, not when you were terminated. You'll need your last employer's information and your SSN.

•Thank you! Do I apply online or do I need to call them?

•Online is fastest - go to esd.wa.gov and look for the unemployment application. Much easier than trying to get through on the phone.

Yeah you can file immediately but just be prepared - if they fired you for performance issues Washington ESD might put your claim into adjudication to investigate. That can take weeks to resolve.

•What exactly is adjudication? And how long does it usually take?

•It's when they review your case to decide if you qualify. They'll contact you and your former employer. Can take 2-6 weeks depending on how backed up they are.

•Mine took 8 weeks last year. Couldn't get anyone on the phone to check status either.

File today if possible. Even if you end up in adjudication, getting your claim started is crucial. Make sure you have all your employment history for the past 18 months ready - Washington ESD will need dates, wages, and reasons for leaving each job.

•I've only had this one job for the past 2 years, so that should be simple at least.

•Perfect, that'll make the application much smoother. Just be honest about the termination reason when they ask.

If you're worried about getting through to Washington ESD to check on your claim status, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps you actually reach a live agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Really saved me when my claim got stuck.

•How much does something like that cost? Seems like you shouldn't have to pay just to talk to unemployment.

•I thought the same thing at first, but honestly after spending hours trying to get through on my own, it was worth it to actually speak to someone who could help.

•I'll keep that in mind if I can't reach them the normal way. Thanks!

One important thing - make sure you file your weekly claims every week even if your initial claim is still pending. Missing those weekly certifications can mess up your benefits later.

•How do I know when to file the weekly claims? Do they email you or something?

Ava Thompson
•You'll get instructions after filing your initial claim. Usually you file every Sunday for the previous week. Don't skip them even if you haven't heard back about your main claim yet.

•THIS IS SO IMPORTANT. I missed my first two weekly claims because I thought I had to wait for approval first. Took months to get those payments straightened out.

Performance issues can be tricky. If they can prove it was willful misconduct you might get denied. But if it was just not being good at the job, that's different. Washington ESD looks at whether you were trying to do your job properly.

•I was definitely trying my best. They just kept changing my tasks without proper training and then got mad when I made mistakes.

•That sounds like it might work in your favor. Document everything you remember about the lack of training.

ugh the whole system is such a nightmare. took me 3 months to get my benefits after being laid off. good luck dealing with washington esd

•That's terrifying. Were you able to eventually get backpay for those months?

Paolo Marino
•yeah but only after filing an appeal and waiting even longer. just be persistent

Don't let horror stories scare you. Many claims go through smoothly, especially if you're honest and provide complete information upfront. The problems usually happen when people leave things out or aren't clear about their situation.

•Thanks for the reassurance. I'll make sure to be thorough with my application.

Make sure you start looking for work right away too. Washington ESD requires job search activities and they can ask for proof. I think it's like 3 job contacts per week or something.

•Do I need to register with WorkSource or anything like that?

Amina Bah
•Yeah you'll probably need to register with WorkSourceWA. They'll tell you about all the requirements when you file your claim.

•It's actually more flexible now than it used to be. You can count networking, online applications, job fairs, all sorts of activities toward your search requirement.

Seriously though, if you run into issues getting through to Washington ESD, don't waste weeks like I did. That Claimyr service I mentioned earlier connects you directly to agents who can actually help with your specific situation. Way better than sitting on hold for hours.

•Is that actually legit? Sounds too good to be true for dealing with government agencies.

•I was skeptical too but it really worked. Check out their demo video - shows exactly how they get you connected to real Washington ESD staff.

Whatever you do, don't quit looking for work while you're on unemployment. They can audit your job search log at any time and if you're not actively searching, they'll cut off your benefits and might even make you pay money back.

•How detailed does the job search log need to be?
0 coins
Javier Hernandez
•Pretty detailed - company names, dates, how you applied, what type of job. Keep track of everything in case they ask for it.

I got fired for performance issues too and still got approved for benefits. The key is that they fired you - you didn't quit. As long as you weren't stealing or doing something really bad, you should be okay.

•That makes me feel better. How long did it take for your claim to get approved?

Emma Davis
•About 3 weeks for the adjudication to finish, then I got my first payment a few days later.

DONT WAIT FILE TODAY!! every day you wait is money you lose because they dont backdate to when you got fired only to when you applied

When they ask about availability for work, make sure you say yes to everything reasonable. Don't limit yourself to just your old job type if you can do other things. Washington ESD wants to see that you're genuinely available for suitable work.

also make sure you have your bank account info ready for direct deposit. way faster than waiting for a check in the mail

•Good point, I'll grab my account info before I start the application.

The whole firing vs quitting thing is huge for eligibility. Since you were terminated, you're in a much better position than someone who quit. Just be honest about what happened and don't try to make it sound worse or better than it was.

•Yeah I'll just tell them exactly what happened. No point in trying to spin it.

Once you get through the initial application, the hardest part is usually just waiting. Try to stay patient and keep filing those weekly claims. And if you need to reach them for any reason, that Claimyr thing people mentioned actually does work - used it myself when my claim had issues.
