How long after you get fired can you file for unemployment in Washington state?
Just got terminated yesterday from my warehouse job and I'm panicking about money. I heard there's some kind of waiting period before you can apply for unemployment benefits? How long do I have to wait after getting fired to file my Washington ESD claim? Also is there a deadline for when I need to file by or I lose the chance completely? Really stressed about this whole process and need to know what my next steps should be.

You can file your Washington ESD claim immediately after being terminated - there's no waiting period to submit your initial application. In fact, you should file as soon as possible because your benefit year starts from when you file, not when you were terminated. The sooner you file, the sooner you can start receiving payments if approved.

•Oh wow, I didn't know that! I thought I had to wait like a week or something. Should I file online or call them?

•Definitely file online at esd.wa.gov - it's much faster than trying to call. The phone lines are usually swamped.

Just make sure you understand the difference between filing your claim and when you actually start getting paid. You can file right away but there's a one-week waiting period before benefits start. So if you file today, your first payable week would be next week.

•Wait, so even if I file today I won't get paid for this week at all?

Ava Thompson
•Correct - the first week is always unpaid. It's called the waiting week. Then you have to file weekly claims every week to keep getting benefits.

•That waiting week rule is so stupid when people are already stressed about money after losing their job.

I was in your exact situation last month. Filed my claim the day after I got fired and it was approved within two weeks. The key is to file ASAP because you can't backdate your claim very far. I think you only have like 4 weeks max to file before you start losing potential benefit weeks.

•Two weeks to get approved? That's not too bad. Did you have any issues with the application process?

•Nope, pretty straightforward since I was laid off. If you were fired for misconduct it might take longer because they have to investigate.

Since you mentioned you were terminated, make sure you understand why you were fired. If it was for cause or misconduct, your claim might get flagged for adjudication which can delay payments for weeks. If it was just a layoff or downsizing, you should be fine. Also gather your pay stubs and any termination paperwork before you start the application.

•They said it was due to attendance issues but I think it was really because I complained about unsafe working conditions. Does that matter?

Connor Murphy
•That could definitely matter. If they coded it as misconduct, Washington ESD will investigate. You'll want to gather any documentation about the safety complaints you made.

•If you get stuck in adjudication and can't reach anyone at Washington ESD, I used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get through to an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me weeks of trying to call myself.

wait i thought you had to be unemployed for a certain amount of time before you could file??? my cousin told me you have to wait 30 days

Dmitry Ivanov
•Your cousin is wrong. You can file immediately after losing your job. The 30 day thing might be confused with job search requirements.

•oh ok that makes more sense. thanks for clearing that up

Here's what I wish someone had told me when I got fired - file your claim online TONIGHT if possible. Don't wait until Monday or next week. Every day you delay is money you're potentially losing. The system is designed to process claims quickly if you have all your info ready.

•Good point about not waiting for Monday. I was going to wait until business hours but I'll do it tonight instead.

•Smart move. The online system is available 24/7 and it's actually easier to navigate when fewer people are using it.

The whole Washington ESD system is a nightmare honestly. They make it so confusing with all these different deadlines and waiting periods. Just file ASAP and hope for the best. That's all any of us can do.

•It's really not that confusing if you read the instructions. The website has pretty clear guidance.

•Easy for you to say. When you're panicking about rent money everything seems impossible.

One more thing - make sure you file your weekly claims every week even if your initial claim is still pending. Missing a weekly claim can cause you to lose benefits for that week permanently. Set a reminder on your phone or something.

•How do I file the weekly claims? Is that separate from the initial application?
0 coins
Ava Thompson
•Yes, completely separate. After you file your initial claim, you'll need to log back in every week and answer questions about your job search activities and any work you did.

•The weekly claims are due by midnight on Saturday each week. Don't miss that deadline!

been there dude, got fired from a retail job in march and filed the same day. took about 3 weeks to get my first payment but it was backdated to cover the waiting period eventually. just be patient and keep filing those weekly claims

•Three weeks seems like forever when you have bills due. Did you have to do anything special to get it backdated?

Oliver Schmidt
•nah it happened automatically once they approved my claim. just had to wait it out

IMPORTANT: If you were fired, they might ask your employer why you were terminated. Make sure you have your side of the story ready and any documentation that supports your case. I got denied initially because my former employer lied about why I was fired, but I won on appeal.

Sofia Rodriguez
•How long did the appeal process take? I'm worried my employer might try to block my claim.

Natasha Volkov
•Appeal took about 6 weeks total but I eventually got all my back benefits. Document everything now while it's fresh in your memory.

If your claim gets complicated and you need to talk to someone at Washington ESD, good luck getting through on the phone. I spent literally hours calling before I found Claimyr - they call for you and get you connected to an actual person. Wish I'd known about it sooner.

•Yeah it's real, I was skeptical too but it actually worked. They have a demo video that shows exactly how it works.

For what it's worth, getting fired doesn't automatically disqualify you from unemployment unless it was for gross misconduct. Attendance issues usually don't count as misconduct in Washington unless it was really egregious. You should be fine to file.

Sofia Rodriguez
•That's reassuring. I was worried they'd automatically deny me since I wasn't laid off.

•Nope, lots of people who get fired still qualify for benefits. The key is whether it was your fault or the employer's fault.

Just to echo what others said - FILE NOW. Don't overthink it, don't wait, just get the application submitted. You can always provide additional information later if they need it during the review process.

•Okay you've all convinced me. Going to file tonight after I gather my paperwork. Thanks everyone!

I made the mistake of waiting almost a month before filing because I thought I needed to find a new job first. Lost out on 3 weeks of benefits because of that misconception. Don't be like me - file immediately.

Sofia Rodriguez
•Oh no that sucks! Were you able to get those weeks back somehow?

Malik Johnson
•Nope, they can only backdate so far. Those weeks are just gone forever.

Pro tip: when you file online, take screenshots of every page in case there are technical issues. The system sometimes glitches and you'll want proof you submitted everything correctly.

Sofia Rodriguez
•Great idea, I'll definitely do that. Are there certain times when the website works better?

•Late evenings and early mornings tend to be less busy. Avoid Monday mornings and right after work hours.

Since you mentioned warehouse work, make sure you report all your wages correctly including any overtime or bonuses from your last quarter of work. They use that to calculate your benefit amount.
0 coins
Sofia Rodriguez
•Good point, I did get some overtime in my last few weeks. I'll make sure to include that.

Ravi Sharma
•Yeah they look at your highest earning quarter so every dollar counts toward your weekly benefit amount.

Update on my situation from earlier - I ended up needing to call Washington ESD to resolve an issue with my weekly claim and couldn't get through for days. Someone here mentioned Claimyr so I tried it and they got me connected within an hour. Definitely worth it if you get stuck.

•How much did that cost? I'm already tight on money.

•It was reasonable considering the time it saved me. Much better than losing benefits because I couldn't reach anyone.

Bottom line - file TODAY if possible. The Washington ESD system is designed to help people who lose their jobs through no fault of their own. Even if you were fired, you probably still qualify unless it was for something really serious.
