How often do you receive unemployment payments from Washington ESD?
This might sound like a dumb question but I just got approved for benefits and I'm not sure about the payment schedule. How often do you receive unemployment payments? Is it weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly? I filed my first weekly claim on Sunday but haven't seen any money hit my account yet. Should I be worried or is there usually a delay for the first payment?

Washington ESD pays unemployment weekly, but there's usually a waiting period for your first payment. You file your weekly claim every Sunday for the previous week, and if approved, payment typically hits your account by Wednesday.

•Thank you! So I should expect to see something by Wednesday then? I was getting nervous it got lost somewhere.

•yeah but sometimes it takes longer especially if ur new to the system

You get paid weekly but there's always a one week waiting period for your first claim. So if you filed your first weekly claim this past Sunday, you won't get paid for that week - it's unpaid. Your second weekly claim (this coming Sunday) would be your first payable week, assuming no issues with your claim.

•Wait, so I lose a whole week of benefits? That seems unfair when I already waited 3 weeks for my claim to get approved.

•Unfortunately yes, it's Washington state law. Everyone has to serve a one-week waiting period. It's not really 'lost' - think of it as the cost of getting benefits.

•That waiting week thing is such BS. Other states don't make you do that.

I've been on unemployment for 2 months now and the payments are pretty consistent. File every Sunday, get paid Wednesday or Thursday. The key is making sure you file before the deadline and report any work hours correctly. One mistake and they'll hold up your payment while they investigate.

•What time is the deadline on Sunday? I want to make sure I don't miss it.

•I think it's like 6 PM on Sunday but I always file mine Saturday night just to be safe. You can file starting Monday morning for the previous week.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to check on your payment status, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps you actually reach an agent. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me hours of calling and getting busy signals.

•Is this legit? I've been trying to call them for days but can never get through to a human.

•Yeah it's real. I was skeptical at first but it actually worked. Got connected to an agent in like 20 minutes instead of calling all day.

•Good to know, I have Chase so hopefully that doesn't cause any delays.

•Chase is usually pretty fast with unemployment deposits. Credit unions can be slower.

The whole system is a joke honestly. You jump through hoops to get approved, then they make you wait an extra week, then the payments are inconsistent. And don't even get me started on the job search requirements - 3 contacts per week minimum or they'll cut you off.

Mason Stone
•Wait, what job search requirements? Nobody told me about that.

Emma Olsen
•You need to make at least 3 job search contacts per week and keep a log. You can do it through WorkSourceWA or track it yourself. They can audit you at any time.

•See what I mean? They don't tell you half the stuff you need to know upfront.

For what it's worth, once you get into the routine it's pretty straightforward. File your weekly claim every Sunday (I set a phone reminder), make sure you're doing your job search activities, and the money comes pretty regularly. Just don't expect it to happen overnight.

•That's reassuring. I guess I just need to be patient and get used to the process.

•just stay on top of filing every week and keep track of any work you do. even if its just a few hours you gotta report it

•This is super important - even one hour of work needs to be reported or they'll think you're committing fraud.

The payment timing can vary if your claim goes into adjudication. Mine got held up for 3 weeks because of some issue with my previous employer. Had to use that Claimyr service someone mentioned to actually talk to someone at Washington ESD about it.

Mason Stone
•What causes adjudication? I want to avoid that if possible.

•Could be anything - employer disputes your claim, you quit vs got fired, they need to verify your identity. Sometimes it's random.

also make sure ur address is updated with them because they mail important stuff too. i almost missed an appeal deadline because i moved and forgot to update my address

Mason Stone
•Good point, I'll double check that in my account settings.

•You can update your address online through your SecureAccess Washington account. Don't wait for them to mail you something to realize it's wrong.

Once you're in the system it's pretty predictable. I get exactly $547 every Wednesday like clockwork. Just remember to file by Sunday at 6pm and you're good.
0 coins
Mason Stone
•That's a pretty decent amount. Is that based on your previous salary?
0 coins
Isla Fischer
•Yeah it's calculated from your highest earning quarter in your base period. Washington ESD has a benefit calculator on their website.

Lucas Lindsey
•$547 is actually on the higher end, most people get way less than that

Pro tip: set up direct deposit if you haven't already. The debit card they send can take forever and has fees. Direct deposit is much faster and free.

•I think I set that up when I filed my initial claim but I'll double check.

Don't stress too much about the timing. Washington ESD is slow but they're generally reliable once you're approved. The hardest part is getting through the initial application and approval process.

•That's good to hear. The approval process was definitely stressful.

If you run into any issues with your payments or need to talk to someone at Washington ESD, definitely check out Claimyr. I've recommended it to several people now and it's worked for everyone. Way better than spending all day trying to get through on the phone.

•Is there a cost for using that service?

•There is but it's worth it when you actually need to reach someone. Much cheaper than taking time off work to sit on hold all day.

I'm in week 8 of benefits and payments have been every Wednesday without fail. The key is consistency - file the same day every week, keep good records, and don't give them any reason to question your claim.

Mason Stone
•What kind of records should I keep?

Ella Harper
•Job search log, any correspondence with Washington ESD, proof of any work hours you report, bank statements showing your payments.

•Good advice. I'd also recommend screenshots of your weekly claim submissions in case there's ever a dispute.

been collecting for about 6 months now and its pretty routine. file sunday get paid wednesday. only time it was different was during a holiday week when everything was delayed a day

•Good to know about holiday delays. I'll keep that in mind.

•Yeah major holidays can shift the payment schedule. They usually post notices about it on the Washington ESD website.

One more thing - make sure you understand the difference between your weekly benefit amount and your maximum benefit amount. Your weekly amount is what you get each week, but there's also a total limit on how much you can collect overall.
0 coins
Mason Stone
•How do I find out what my maximum benefit amount is?
0 coins
Owen Devar
•It should be listed in your initial determination letter, or you can see it when you log into your Washington ESD account online.

•In Washington you can collect up to 26 weeks of benefits typically, but it depends on your base period wages.

Daniel Rivera
Bottom line - you get paid weekly as long as you file your weekly claims on time and don't have any issues. It's not as complicated as it seems at first, just takes some getting used to.
