Do I get unemployment every week from Washington ESD?
I just started getting unemployment benefits and I'm confused about the payment schedule. Do I actually receive money every week or is it different? I filed my first weekly claim on Sunday but haven't seen anything in my account yet. How does this work exactly?

You have to file weekly claims every week to get paid, but the actual payments usually come every other week (bi-weekly). So you'll file two weekly claims and then get one payment covering both weeks.

•Oh okay that makes more sense! I was expecting money after just one weekly claim filing.

•Yeah it's confusing at first. The weekly claim filing is separate from when you actually get paid.

Washington ESD pays unemployment benefits bi-weekly, typically on Tuesdays or Wednesdays. You must file your weekly claim every week by the deadline (usually Sunday night) to remain eligible. Missing even one weekly claim can cause your benefits to stop.

•What happens if I miss the Sunday deadline? Can I still file late?

Cole Roush
•You can file late but you won't get paid for that week. You'll need to restart your weekly claim filing the following week.

I've been dealing with Washington ESD for months and their phone lines are impossible to get through. If you need to talk to someone about your payment schedule or have issues with your weekly claims, I found this service called Claimyr that actually got me through to an agent. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Is that legit? I've been trying to call Washington ESD for weeks about my adjudication.

•Yeah it worked for me. I was skeptical too but got through in like 20 minutes instead of spending hours redialing.

•How much does it cost though? I'm already broke waiting for my benefits.

the payment thing is SO confusing when you first start!! i thought i'd get money right away but had to wait like 2 weeks for my first payment even after filing weekly claims

Kayla Morgan
•Right?! They should explain this better when you first apply.

James Maki
•There's usually a waiting week too for new claims, which adds to the confusion.

Don't forget you also have to do job search activities every week and log them. Washington ESD requires 3 job search activities per week minimum. If you don't do this, they can deny your weekly claim even if you file it.

Kayla Morgan
•Wait what?? Nobody told me about job search requirements. Where do I log these?
0 coins
Jasmine Hancock
•You log them in your WorkSourceWA account. You need to create an account there if you don't have one already.

Cole Roush
•The job search requirement is 3 activities per week unless you're on standby status with your employer.

My payments have been all over the place. Sometimes I get them Tuesday, sometimes Wednesday, once it came on Thursday. There's no consistency with Washington ESD timing.

•same here! i never know when to expect it

James Maki
•Bank holidays and processing delays can affect the exact day, but it should always be within that Tuesday-Wednesday window generally.

I'm still waiting for my first payment and it's been 3 weeks since I filed my initial claim. My weekly claims say 'paid' but no money in my account. This system is broken.

Cole Roush
•If your weekly claims show 'paid' but you haven't received money, there might be an issue with your payment method or bank account information. You should contact Washington ESD.

•This is exactly why I mentioned Claimyr earlier. Getting through to someone at Washington ESD to fix payment issues is nearly impossible otherwise.

•I'll check out that Claimyr thing. I'm desperate at this point.

For anyone new to the system: File your weekly claim every Sunday (or before the deadline), expect payment every two weeks on Tuesday/Wednesday, keep track of job search activities, and don't panic if the first payment takes longer due to processing time.

Kayla Morgan
•This is really helpful, thank you! I wish they explained all this upfront.

•Also make sure your direct deposit info is correct or you'll be waiting even longer for paper checks.

been on unemployment for 8 months now and still file every week religiously. miss one week and you're screwed

Kayla Morgan
•8 months?? I thought unemployment only lasted 6 months max?

Cole Roush
•Regular unemployment in Washington is up to 26 weeks, but there can be extensions available depending on unemployment rates and federal programs.

The worst part is when your claim goes into adjudication and you keep filing weekly claims but don't get paid for weeks while they 'investigate' something

Sayid Hassan
•That's what happened to me! Still in adjudication after 3 weeks.

•Adjudication issues are another good reason to use something like Claimyr to actually talk to someone. They can sometimes explain what's holding up your claim.

•I was in adjudication for 6 weeks once. Never did find out what the issue was, it just randomly resolved.

Quick tip: set up text or email notifications in your Washington ESD account so you get reminders about filing your weekly claims. Easy to forget and then you lose a week of benefits.

Kayla Morgan
•How do I set that up? I don't see that option in my account.

Jasmine Hancock
•It's under account settings or notification preferences. Sometimes the website is glitchy though.

does anyone know if you can file weekly claims on the mobile app or do you have to use the website? the website is so slow on my phone
0 coins
James Maki
•I think you have to use the website. I don't think Washington ESD has a mobile app for weekly claims.
0 coins
Cole Roush
•Correct, weekly claims must be filed through the secure website, not through any mobile app.

Just want to add that if you're on standby with your employer, you still have to file weekly claims but the job search requirements might be different. Check with your employer about your standby status.

Kayla Morgan
•What's standby status? Is that different from regular unemployment?
0 coins
Roger Romero
•Standby means your employer expects to call you back to work within a certain timeframe. You don't have to actively job search in the same way.

The thing that gets me is they can change your benefit amount or stop your payments without warning. Then you have to figure out why and try to call them. It's ridiculous.

•This happened to me too! Payment went from $450 to $200 with no explanation.

•Usually benefit amount changes are due to additional wages being reported or changes in your base year calculation. You should have received a notice explaining the change.

been filing weekly claims for 4 months now, it becomes routine after a while. just don't forget to do it by sunday night or you lose that week

Kayla Morgan
•What time on Sunday does the deadline end?

Anna Kerber
•i think it's like 11:59 PM sunday but don't wait that long, sometimes the website crashes

Remember that filing your weekly claim is basically certifying that you're still unemployed and available for work that week. Answer all the questions honestly - they do audit these sometimes.
0 coins
Kayla Morgan
•What kind of questions do they ask on the weekly claim?
0 coins
James Maki
•Things like did you work any hours, did you look for work, are you able and available to work, did you refuse any job offers. Pretty standard stuff.

Pro tip: if you ever have issues with your weekly claim or payments, document everything. Screenshot error messages, keep records of when you called, save all correspondence. You'll need it if you have to appeal anything.

Danielle Mays
•This is great advice. I wish I had done this from the beginning.

Jasmine Hancock
•Yes! And print out or save copies of your payment history regularly in case the website has issues.

For anyone still struggling to get through to Washington ESD about payment or weekly claim issues, I can't recommend Claimyr enough. It saved me hours of frustration trying to get basic answers about my claim status.

The whole system would be so much easier if they just had better customer service and clearer information. Most of the confusion comes from not understanding the process.
0 coins
Rachel Tao
•exactly!! like why is it so hard to explain that you file weekly but get paid bi-weekly?
0 coins
Cole Roush
•Agreed. The process itself isn't that complicated once you understand it, but the communication could be much better.

Kayla Morgan
Thank you everyone for all the helpful info! I feel much more confident about the process now. Going to set up those notifications and make sure I understand the job search requirements too.
