How much is unemployment per week in Washington - what should I expect?

I'm about to file for unemployment benefits for the first time and trying to figure out my budget. Does anyone know how much unemployment pays per week in Washington? I was making about $55,000 a year at my last job. I've heard it's based on your previous wages but I can't find clear info on the Washington ESD website about the actual weekly amounts. Any idea what I should expect to receive?

Washington unemployment benefits are calculated based on your highest earning quarter in your base period. The maximum weekly benefit amount for 2025 is $999 per week. Your benefit amount will be roughly 3.85% of your total wages in your highest quarter, up to that maximum.

0 coins

Thanks! So if I made around $50k last year, what would that translate to roughly?

0 coins

It depends on how your earnings were distributed across quarters. If you had a high quarter of around $15k, you'd probably get somewhere in the $575-650 range per week.

0 coins

i think its like 60% of what you made but theres a cap, mine came out to about $720 a week when i filed last year

0 coins

That's pretty good! I was worried it would be way less than that.

0 coins

Washington unemployment benefits are calculated based on your highest earning quarter from the past year. The maximum weekly benefit amount is currently $999 per week, but most people get between $200-$600 depending on their previous wages. You'll get about 50% of your average weekly wage up to that maximum.

0 coins

That's helpful! So if I was making around $1,050 per week, I'd probably get close to $525 weekly?

0 coins

Yeah that sounds about right. The exact calculation uses your base year wages divided by 52, then you get roughly half of that amount.

0 coins

Actually, Washington ESD has a benefit calculator on their website at esd.wa.gov. You can get a rough estimate by entering your quarterly wages. Just remember you need to have worked in at least two quarters during your base period to qualify.

0 coins

Perfect, I'll check that out. I definitely worked more than two quarters so I should be good there.

0 coins

Yeah that calculator is pretty accurate. Used it when I got laid off from Boeing and it was within like $20 of my actual benefit amount.

0 coins

i think its different for everyone but when i filed last year i was getting around $450 per week. took forever to get approved though, was stuck in adjudication for like 6 weeks

0 coins

Six weeks?? That's crazy long. Did you have to do anything special to get it approved?

0 coins

nah just had to wait it out. tried calling washington esd like 100 times but could never get through

0 coins

One thing to keep in mind - even if you qualify for the maximum amount, actually getting through to Washington ESD to file your claim can be a nightmare. I spent literally weeks trying to get someone on the phone when I had issues with my claim. Finally used Claimyr.com and their phone service got me through to an agent in like 20 minutes. They have this demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows exactly how it works.

0 coins

Never heard of that service before. Is it legit? I'm always suspicious of companies that charge to help with government stuff.

0 coins

I was skeptical too but it actually worked. Way better than sitting on hold for hours just to get disconnected.

0 coins

The weekly benefit amount depends on your base year earnings. Washington ESD looks at the four quarters before you filed, finds your highest earning quarter, then divides that by 26 to get your weekly benefit amount. There's also a minimum of $295 per week if you qualify. You can use the benefit calculator on the Washington ESD website to get an estimate.

0 coins

I tried the calculator but it's confusing. Do they use gross or net wages for the calculation?

0 coins

They use gross wages reported by your employer. So whatever shows up on your W-2 forms.

0 coins

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to ask about your benefit amount, I found this service called Claimyr that actually helped me reach an agent. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me hours of trying to call myself.

0 coins

Is that one of those paid services? I'm already broke waiting for unemployment to kick in.

0 coins

Yeah there's a cost but honestly it was worth it to actually talk to someone at Washington ESD. Took like 20 minutes to get connected vs the weeks I spent trying on my own.

0 coins

The weekly amount is just part of it though. You also need to factor in the job search requirements. Washington requires you to make 3 job search contacts per week and keep a log. Missing that can disqualify you even if you're eligible for benefits.

0 coins

Good point! Do they actually check those job search logs or is it more of an honor system?

0 coins

They can audit you at any time and ask for proof. I always screenshot job applications and keep emails from employers just in case.

0 coins

Yes definitely keep records! I got audited after 8 weeks and had to provide detailed documentation of every job contact.

0 coins

The amounts change every year I think. Last time I was on unemployment was 2022 and the max was different then. You should check the current Washington ESD benefit table to see what the ranges are for 2025.

0 coins

Do you remember roughly what you were getting back then?

0 coins

I was getting around $380 per week but I wasn't making as much as you were.

0 coins

Wait, so the maximum is $999 per week? That seems really high compared to other states I've looked at.

0 coins

Washington has one of the higher maximum benefit amounts in the country. But remember, very few people actually get the maximum - you'd need to have earned over $26,000 in your highest quarter.

0 coins

Yeah most people get somewhere between $400-700 per week depending on their previous wages.

0 coins

Don't forget about taxes! Unemployment benefits are taxable income. You can have them withhold 10% federal tax when you certify each week, or you'll owe it all at tax time.

0 coins

Oh man I didn't even think about taxes. So if I get $600 a week, I should expect to actually receive less than that?

0 coins

If you elect to have taxes withheld, yes. But it's optional - you can choose to pay it all when you file your tax return instead.

0 coins

MAKE SURE YOU FILE IMMEDIATELY! The sooner you file the sooner you can start getting benefits. Even if you're not sure about the exact amount, just get your claim started because there's always a waiting period anyway.

0 coins

Good point. I was waiting to understand everything first but maybe I should just file now.

0 coins

Definitely file now. You can always ask questions later but you can't backdate your claim very far.

0 coins

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS A MESS. I've been waiting 6 weeks for my claim to get approved and still haven't seen a dime. They keep saying it's in 'adjudication' but won't tell me why or how long it'll take.

0 coins

Adjudication can take a while, especially if there are any questions about your separation from work. Have you tried calling to get more information about what's holding it up?

0 coins

TRIED CALLING A MILLION TIMES. Either busy signal or they hang up after 2 hours on hold.

0 coins

This is exactly why I mentioned Claimyr earlier. When my claim got stuck in adjudication, that service helped me get through to actually talk to someone who could explain what was happening.

0 coins

For what it's worth, I just went through this process last month. Made about $4,500/month at my previous job and my weekly benefit amount came out to $683. The whole application process through SecureAccess Washington was pretty straightforward once I got logged in.

0 coins

That's really helpful context since our previous salaries are similar. How long did it take to get your first payment?

0 coins

About 3 weeks from when I filed to when I got my first payment. Had to wait through the typical waiting week plus processing time.

0 coins

Also remember you have to file your weekly claims every week to keep getting paid. And you'll need to do job searches - I think it's 3 per week in Washington. Don't forget about that part or they'll stop your benefits.

0 coins

Three job searches per week? That seems like a lot when you're just starting out.

0 coins

It's actually pretty standard. You just need to keep a log of where you applied and when. WorkSourceWA has tools to help track this.

0 coins

been on unemployment twice and both times got different amounts even though my wages were similar. the calculation is confusing as hell and washington esd doesnt explain it well on their website

0 coins

That's weird. I wonder if they changed the formula between your claims?

0 coins

maybe, or maybe they looked at different quarters. honestly never figured it out

0 coins

also remember you can only collect for 26 weeks max in washington unless theres some special extension program going on

0 coins

Actually it's up to 26 weeks normally, but can be extended during high unemployment periods. Right now I think it's just the standard 26 weeks.

0 coins

The benefit amount also depends on if you have any dependents. You can get additional money for dependent children - I think it's like $25 per child per week up to 5 kids maximum.

0 coins

I don't have kids but that's good to know for others reading this.

0 coins

Yeah the dependent allowance helps a lot when you have a family to support.

0 coins

One thing that caught me off guard was the partial benefit rules. If you work part-time while collecting unemployment, they reduce your benefit amount based on how much you earn that week. There's a formula for it but it's kind of complicated.

0 coins

Good to know! I might pick up some freelance work while job hunting so I'll need to look into that.

0 coins

Yeah definitely report any earnings when you file your weekly claim. They have worksheets that help calculate the reduction.

0 coins

Whatever amount you get, remember it's taxable income. You can have taxes withheld automatically or pay quarterly. Don't forget about this come tax time!

0 coins

Oh good point. I should probably have them withhold taxes so I don't owe a bunch next year.

0 coins

Yeah that's what I always do. Better safe than sorry.

0 coins

My neighbor was getting unemployment and said she had to call Washington ESD to get her benefit amount explained because the letter was confusing. She ended up using some service to get through to them faster. Think it was called Claimyr or something like that.

0 coins

Someone else mentioned that service too. Might be worth looking into if I have questions.

0 coins

Yeah she said it worked really well for her. Saved her a lot of time trying to get through on the phone.

0 coins

My advice is to file as soon as possible after you lose your job. There's a waiting week before benefits start, and the longer you wait to file, the longer it takes to start receiving payments. I made the mistake of waiting 2 weeks thinking I'd find something quickly.

0 coins

I'm definitely filing this week. Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it!

0 coins

Smart move. Even if you find a job right away, at least you'll have gone through the process and know what to expect if you ever need it again.

0 coins

Just went through Washington ESD's benefit calculator and it's pretty user-friendly. You enter your wages for each quarter in your base period and it gives you an estimate. My calculation was spot-on when I actually got approved.

0 coins

Perfect! I'll definitely use that calculator before I file my claim.

0 coins

Has anyone had luck with the virtual career workshops that WorkSource offers? I need to meet my job search requirements and wondering if those count toward the 3 weekly contacts.

0 coins

Yes, attending WorkSource workshops definitely counts as valid job search activities. Just make sure to keep documentation that you attended.

0 coins

I did a resume workshop through WorkSource and it counted. They give you a certificate of attendance that you can use for your records.

0 coins

One more thing - if you're laid off due to lack of work, your claim should be pretty straightforward. But if you were fired or quit, Washington ESD will investigate whether you're eligible, which can delay your benefits for weeks.

0 coins

Thankfully I was laid off due to company restructuring, so hopefully that makes the process smoother.

0 coins

Yeah layoffs are usually the easiest cases. Just make sure you have your separation paperwork handy when you file.

0 coins

if anyones still having trouble getting through to washington esd by phone, i used some service called claimyr last week and it worked great. way better than the regular phone number

0 coins

Is that the same service someone mentioned earlier? Might have to try that if I run into issues with my claim.

0 coins

yeah probably the same one, it was really easy to use and saved me tons of time

0 coins

The system is so messed up. I was supposed to get $445 per week but kept getting random amounts - sometimes $300, sometimes $500. Took months to sort out with Washington ESD.

0 coins

That sounds like a nightmare. Did they eventually fix it?

0 coins

Eventually yeah but it was a huge hassle. Had to provide like 10 different documents.

0 coins

if you worked multiple jobs you might qualify for more than you think. washington esd looks at all your employers from your base year

0 coins

I only had one main job but did some freelance work. Wonder if that counts?

0 coins

freelance might not count unless you paid unemployment taxes on it. regular W-2 jobs definitely count though

0 coins

Don't expect to get rich off unemployment lol. It's meant to be temporary assistance while you look for work. The amount is designed to motivate you to find a new job relatively quickly.

0 coins

Yeah I know it's not permanent. Just trying to budget while I job search.

0 coins

Nothing wrong with planning ahead. Smart to know what to expect financially.

0 coins

I used that Claimyr service mentioned earlier when I needed to talk to Washington ESD about my benefit calculation. It actually worked - got connected to an agent who walked me through exactly how they calculated my weekly amount. Worth checking out if you need to speak with someone directly.

0 coins

That's good to know. I might try that if I have issues understanding my benefit letter.

0 coins

Yeah the agent was able to explain everything clearly. Much better than trying to figure it out from the website.

0 coins

Also keep in mind you can work part-time while on unemployment and still get partial benefits. They reduce your weekly amount based on how much you earn but you don't lose everything if you pick up some temporary work.

0 coins

That's really helpful to know. I wasn't sure if any work would disqualify me completely.

0 coins

Nope, they just reduce it proportionally. Better to work part-time than not at all if you can find something.

0 coins

whatever you do dont lie about your wages or work history. washington esd will find out and you'll have to pay back everything plus penalties

0 coins

Definitely won't lie. I want to do this right the first time.

0 coins

good attitude. honesty is always the best policy with unemployment claims

0 coins

The benefit amounts seem fair to me. When I was on unemployment I got about 45% of my previous weekly wages which was enough to cover my basic expenses while job hunting. Lasted about 4 months before I found something new.

0 coins

That's encouraging. Hopefully I can find something quickly too.

0 coins

You will! Just stay persistent with the job search and follow all the Washington ESD requirements.

0 coins

One last tip - make sure your contact info is up to date with Washington ESD. They'll mail you important documents about your benefit amount and you don't want to miss anything because of an old address.

0 coins

Good reminder. I just moved recently so I should double check that.

0 coins

Yeah definitely update that right away. Missing mail from Washington ESD can cause delays in your benefits.
