How much do you get from Washington ESD unemployment benefits weekly?
I'm thinking about filing for unemployment but want to know what to expect payment-wise. How much does Washington ESD typically pay per week? I was making about $52,000 a year at my previous job in retail management. Does anyone know how they calculate the weekly benefit amount? Also wondering if there are any deductions or taxes taken out automatically.

Washington ESD calculates your weekly benefit amount based on your highest earning quarter from the past year. The maximum weekly benefit for 2025 is $999 per week. They take your highest quarter earnings, divide by 26, then you get about 50% of that amount. So if you made $13,000 in your best quarter, your weekly would be around $250.

•Thanks! That helps me get a ballpark figure. Do you know if they automatically take out federal taxes?

•You can choose to have 10% federal tax withheld when you file your weekly claims, but it's optional. I'd recommend it though to avoid owing at tax time.

just filed last month and getting $420/week. made about 48k last year so sounds like you'll be in similar range. the calculation is confusing but basically they look at your best quarter and do some math with it

•That's actually pretty close to what I was hoping for. How long did it take for your first payment to come through?

•took about 3 weeks total from when I first applied. had to do the waiting week thing too

The exact formula is: take your two highest earning quarters from your base year, add them together, divide by 26, then multiply by 0.0385. That gives you your weekly benefit amount, up to the maximum of $999. Your base year is the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters before you file.

•Wow that's way more complicated than I thought! Is there a calculator somewhere on the Washington ESD website?

•Yes, there's a benefit calculator on the Washington ESD website under the 'File a Claim' section. It'll give you an estimate if you input your quarterly earnings.

•Perfect, I'll check that out. Thanks for breaking down the actual formula!

Been trying to get through to Washington ESD for weeks to ask about my benefit calculation because something seems wrong with my amount. The phone system is absolutely terrible - keeps hanging up on me after 2+ hours on hold. Finally found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually got me through to a real person in like 20 minutes. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Totally worth it when you need to actually talk to someone at Washington ESD.

•Never heard of that but honestly anything would be better than their phone system. Did they help resolve your benefit amount issue?

•Yeah, turns out they were missing one of my quarters of earnings. The agent was able to add it and recalculate my benefits on the spot. Went from $280/week to $385/week.

•Good to know there's a way to actually reach them if I run into problems. Their phone system sounds awful.

Keep in mind that your weekly benefit amount can change if they find additional wages after you file. Sometimes employers are slow to report earnings to Washington ESD and it can bump up your calculation later.

Nathaniel Mikhaylov
•Interesting - would that mean I'd get back pay for the difference?
0 coins
Ellie Kim
•Yes, if your benefit amount increases due to additional wage information, they'll pay you the difference retroactively for all the weeks you've already claimed.

the max is really $999 now? damn when i was on unemployment in 2019 it was only like $790 or something. guess it went up with inflation

Eva St. Cyr
•Yeah they adjust it annually based on the state average weekly wage. It's been going up steadily the past few years.

•makes sense, cost of living keeps going up too so at least they're keeping pace somewhat

Wait, so if I made different amounts each quarter, they only look at the highest ones? What if my most recent quarter was my lowest because I got laid off partway through?
0 coins
Kaitlyn Otto
•That's exactly why they use your highest quarters instead of just the most recent ones. The system is designed to base your benefits on your typical earning capacity, not what might have been a partial quarter.

Axel Far
•Oh that's actually really smart then. I was worried my partial quarter would mess things up.

One thing to remember is that you have to be able and available for work to keep getting benefits. That means actively looking for jobs and keeping a job search log. Washington ESD requires 3 job search activities per week.

Nathaniel Mikhaylov
•Good point. What counts as a job search activity?

Mohammad Khaled
•Applying for jobs, attending job fairs, networking events, interviews, even some online job search activities. They have a list on their website of what qualifies.

Kristian Bishop
•yeah they're pretty strict about the job search thing now. make sure you keep good records

Does anyone know if overtime hours affect the calculation? I worked a ton of OT last year and want to make sure that's factored in properly.

•All wages reported to Washington ESD count toward your base period earnings, including overtime, bonuses, and commissions. As long as your employer reported it, it should be included.

Luis Johnson
•Great, that overtime should really help boost my benefit amount then.

Pro tip: when you file your weekly claims online, double-check all your answers before submitting. If you make a mistake and have to correct it later, it can delay your payments significantly.

•Thanks for the heads up. Are there specific questions that trip people up?

Alina Rosenthal
•The work search questions and reporting any part-time work or income are the big ones. Even small amounts need to be reported accurately.

ugh the whole process is so confusing. why can't they just tell you upfront exactly what you'll get instead of all this calculation stuff

Kaitlyn Otto
•I understand the frustration, but the calculation ensures benefits are fair and based on your actual work history. It prevents people from gaming the system.

•i guess that makes sense but still seems unnecessarily complicated for people who are already stressed about being unemployed

For what it's worth, Washington state has some of the higher unemployment benefits in the country. The $999 max is pretty generous compared to other states.

Nathaniel Mikhaylov
•That's good to know. Makes me feel a bit better about the whole situation.

Fiona Sand
•yeah at least we're not in a state where the max is like $300 or something crazy low

Just want to add that if you worked in multiple states recently, you might need to file an interstate claim. The process is a bit different and can affect your benefit calculation.

•Fortunately I've only worked in Washington, but good to know for others who might be reading this.

•Yeah it's not super common but worth mentioning since it can really complicate things if people don't know about it upfront.

Remember that unemployment benefits are taxable income. You'll get a 1099-G form at the end of the year for tax purposes.
0 coins
Nathaniel Mikhaylov
•Right, that's why having the 10% federal tax withheld automatically is probably smart.
0 coins
Oliver Cheng
•Exactly. Better to have it taken out as you go rather than owe a big chunk at tax time.

Anyone else have issues with their Washington ESD account getting locked? Happened to me twice and trying to reach someone to unlock it is nearly impossible through normal channels.

Jasmine Hernandez
•This is exactly why I ended up using Claimyr. Their phone system failures are ridiculous and when you actually need help, you can't get through. That service got me to a real person who unlocked my account in minutes.

•Good to know there's an option that actually works. The regular phone system is completely broken.

Quick question - do benefits start immediately or is there still a waiting week?
0 coins
Eva St. Cyr
•There's still a one-week waiting period before you can receive your first payment. You file for that week but don't get paid for it.

Ella Cofer
•Okay thanks, just wanted to plan accordingly for my budget.

The benefit calculator on their website is pretty accurate. I used it before filing and my actual amount was within $10 of what it estimated.
0 coins
Nathaniel Mikhaylov
•That's reassuring. I'll definitely use that to get a realistic expectation before I file.

Kevin Bell
•Yeah it takes the guesswork out of it. Just make sure you have your wage information handy when you use it.

One more thing - if you're thinking about taking any part-time work while on unemployment, make sure you understand how it affects your benefits. You can still work part-time but they reduce your weekly benefit based on what you earn.
0 coins
Nathaniel Mikhaylov
•How does that calculation work? Is it dollar for dollar reduction?
0 coins
Savannah Glover
•No, it's more complicated. They have a formula where you can earn up to a certain amount without any reduction, then it phases out gradually. Check their website for the exact formula.
