How much do you get on unemployment benefits in Washington ESD?
I'm thinking about filing for unemployment but I have no idea what to expect for weekly payments. Does anyone know how Washington ESD calculates the benefit amount? I made about $52,000 last year working full time in retail management. Also wondering if there's a maximum amount they pay out? Just trying to figure out if it'll be enough to cover my basic expenses while I look for work.

Washington ESD uses your highest earning quarter from your base period to calculate benefits. Generally you get about 3.85% of that quarter's wages as your weekly benefit amount. The current maximum is $999 per week but most people don't hit that.

•Thanks! So if I made $13,000 in my best quarter that would be around $500 a week? That's actually better than I expected.

•yeah that sounds about right, i got $487 weekly and made similar to you

The exact formula is complicated but there's a benefit calculator on the Washington ESD website that can give you an estimate. You'll need your wage info from the last 18 months. Also remember you have to pay taxes on unemployment benefits - they don't automatically withhold.

•Oh wow I didn't know about the taxes. Do they take it out automatically or do I have to set aside money?

•You can request 10% federal tax withholding when you file your weekly claims, but nothing for state taxes. I'd recommend setting aside about 20% total to be safe.

Just be prepared that getting through to Washington ESD can be a nightmare if you have questions about your benefit amount. I spent weeks trying to call them about a calculation error on my claim. Finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through - they have this system that calls for you and gets you connected to an actual agent. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works.

•How much does that service cost? Seems expensive if you're already out of work.

•It's way cheaper than losing weeks of benefits because you can't get through to fix an issue. Plus the time I saved was worth it - got my calculation corrected in one call instead of trying for weeks.

UPDATE: Found the benefit calculator on their website. Based on my wages it looks like I'd get around $485 per week for up to 26 weeks. That should cover my rent and basic expenses while job hunting.

•don't forget you have to do the job search requirements too, 3 contacts per week minimum

•Yeah I saw that. Do they actually check on those job search activities?

The benefit amount also depends on if you have any dependents. You can get additional money for dependent children but you have to specifically request it during the application process.

•How much extra do you get for dependents?

Sunny Wang
•I think it's around $25 per dependent child per week, but there are income limits that might affect eligibility.

just a heads up the money doesnt start right away, theres usually a waiting week where you file but dont get paid. also if you quit your job instead of getting laid off you might not qualify at all

•I got laid off due to store closure so I should be fine there. Good to know about the waiting week though.

•Actually Washington eliminated the waiting week a few years ago during COVID and never brought it back. You should get paid for your first eligible week.

IMPORTANT: Your benefit amount is based on wages from employers who paid into the unemployment system. If you had any 1099 contractor work or under-the-table income, that won't count toward your benefit calculation.

•All my work was regular W2 employment so that shouldn't be an issue.

•Yeah make sure all your employers are showing up in your wage record when you apply. Sometimes there are reporting delays.

The system is so broken honestly. I applied 6 weeks ago and still haven't gotten my first payment because they keep asking for more documents. Every time I submit something they ask for something else. Makes me wonder if they're just trying to discourage people from collecting.

•That's terrible! Have you tried calling them to find out exactly what's missing?

McKenzie Shade
•Ha! Calling them is impossible. I tried for 3 weeks straight and either got busy signals or got disconnected after waiting on hold for hours.

•This is exactly why I mentioned Claimyr earlier. When you need to actually talk to someone at Washington ESD, it's the only way I've found that actually works consistently.

One thing to remember is that if you work part-time while collecting unemployment, they'll reduce your weekly benefit dollar for dollar after you earn more than about $155. So if your benefit is $485 and you work a part-time job making $200 that week, you'd get $440 in unemployment benefits.

Everett Tutum
•That's good to know. Is it worth taking part-time work then or does it just complicate things?

•Any income is better than none, plus it shows you're actively trying to get back to work. Just make sure you report all earnings honestly on your weekly claims.

Don't get too excited about that $485 estimate until you actually get approved. Washington ESD has been really strict about eligibility lately and they're scrutinizing every application. My cousin got denied even though she was clearly laid off.

•Why would someone get denied if they were laid off? That seems like the most straightforward case.

•Something about not having enough wages in her base period because of when she started her job. The timing calculations are really confusing.

Pro tip: When you do your weekly claims, do them on Sunday evenings. The system is less likely to crash then and you'll get your payment faster. I learned this the hard way after missing a week because the website was down.

•Good advice! I always did mine Sunday night too and never had technical problems.

•Thanks for the tip! I'll remember that when I start filing.

You might also want to sign up for direct deposit right away. The paper checks take forever to arrive and sometimes get lost in the mail. Direct deposit usually hits your account within 1-2 business days of filing your weekly claim.

Everett Tutum
•Definitely planning on direct deposit. Do I set that up during the initial application?

Kirsuktow DarkBlade
•Yes, there's an option during the application process. Just have your bank routing and account numbers ready.

Make sure you understand the job search requirements before you start collecting. You need to make at least 3 job search contacts per week and keep detailed records. They do audit these occasionally and if you can't prove your job search activities they'll make you pay back benefits.

Everett Tutum
•What counts as a valid job search contact? Just applying online or does it have to be more than that?

Abigail bergen
•Online applications count, but they also accept networking contacts, job fairs, employment agency visits, and contacting employers directly. Just keep good records of everything.

The whole system is designed to be confusing and frustrating. Half the time their website doesn't work properly and when you finally need to talk to someone about an issue, good luck getting through. It's like they don't want people to actually collect benefits.

•I feel you on the frustration but complaining doesn't help anyone. At least the benefits are there when you need them.

•Actually the phone issue is real. I waited 4 hours on hold once just to get disconnected. That's when someone told me about Claimyr and honestly it was a lifesaver for getting through to resolve my payment issue.

Whatever you do, don't try to game the system or lie about anything. They cross-reference everything with employer records and the IRS. I know someone who got caught working under the table while collecting benefits and had to pay back everything plus penalties.

•Definitely not planning on doing anything shady. Just want to collect what I'm entitled to legally while I look for work.

•Smart approach. Better to be completely honest and maybe get a little less money than to risk having to pay back thousands later.

Thanks everyone for all the helpful info! I feel much more prepared now to apply for benefits. Sounds like I should expect around $485 per week if everything goes smoothly with my application.

•Just remember if you run into any issues getting through to Washington ESD, Claimyr is there as a backup option. Sometimes you really do need to talk to an actual person to get things resolved.
