How much are unemployment payments in Washington state 2025?

I'm trying to figure out what to expect for my weekly benefit amount if I have to file for unemployment. I've been working at a tech company making about $85k annually for the past 18 months. Does anyone know how Washington ESD calculates the weekly benefit amounts? I keep seeing different numbers online and want to know what's current for 2025.

Washington ESD uses your highest quarter earnings from your base period to calculate benefits. For 2025, the maximum weekly benefit is $999 and minimum is $295. They take your highest quarter wages, divide by 26, then you get about 3.85% of that amount weekly.

So if I made around $21k in my highest quarter, that would be about $800 divided by 26 times 3.85%? That seems like a weird calculation.

Actually it's your highest quarter divided by 26, then you get 3.85% of your total base period wages, but there's a cap. It's confusing but the online calculator on Washington ESD website will give you an estimate.

I just filed last month and was shocked at how low mine was! I was making $65k and only getting $542 per week. The formula is really complicated but basically you won't get anywhere near your full salary replacement.

0 coins

That's still way better than some states though. At least Washington has decent benefits compared to like Florida or something.

$542 seems pretty good actually for unemployment. I was only getting $380 when I was on it two years ago.

The exact formula is: weekly benefit = (high quarter wages ÷ 26) OR (total base period wages × 0.0385), whichever is LOWER. Then there's the $999 maximum cap. So even if your calculation comes out higher, you'll max out at $999/week.

Thanks! That makes way more sense. So it's not just a simple percentage of your salary.

Don't forget you have to pay taxes on unemployment benefits too, so factor that in when budgeting.

I've been trying to get through to Washington ESD for weeks to ask about my benefit calculation because something seems wrong with mine. Their phone lines are absolutely impossible. Has anyone found a way to actually talk to someone there?

I had the same problem until someone told me about Claimyr. It's a service that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents automatically. Check out claimyr.com - they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

Really? That sounds too good to be true. How does it work exactly?

0 coins

It basically calls Washington ESD repeatedly until it gets you connected to an actual person. Way better than sitting on hold for hours or getting disconnected.

Just wanted to add that your benefit amount also depends on your base period. They look at the first 4 of the last 5 completed quarters before you file. So timing can matter if you recently got a raise or started a higher paying job.

0 coins

Oh interesting, so if I just got this job 6 months ago, my benefits might be based on my old lower paying job?

0 coins

Possibly, depends on exactly when you file and when your quarters end. Washington ESD has a base period calculator tool that can help you figure out which quarters they'll use.

0 coins

The whole system is rigged anyway. They make it impossible to get decent benefits and then make you jump through hoops with job searches and everything else.

I mean, it's insurance we all pay into through our paychecks. It's not supposed to replace your full income, just help while you find new work.

0 coins

Yeah but try living on $500 a week in Seattle. It's a joke.

For what it's worth, I used an online calculator and it was pretty accurate. I think it was on the Washington ESD website under benefit calculator or something like that.

0 coins

I'll definitely check that out, thanks!

Quick question - do they count commission and bonuses in the calculation? I had a really good quarter last year with a big bonus.

0 coins

Yes, any wages reported on your W-2 count toward the benefit calculation, including bonuses and commissions.

0 coins

Sweet, that should help my benefit amount then!

I'm getting the runaround from Washington ESD about my benefit calculation. They said there was an issue with my wage records but won't explain what. This is so frustrating.

0 coins

Same thing happened to my friend. She used that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier and actually got through to someone who fixed her wage records. Might be worth trying.

At this point I'm willing to try anything. The online messaging system is useless.

Don't forget that Washington has that extra $25 per week if you have dependents. Not much but every bit helps.

0 coins

Good to know! I don't have kids but that's useful info for others.

0 coins

The maximum went up this year from $844 to $999. Not sure why they don't publicize these changes better.

0 coins

Probably because they don't want people to know they can get more money lol

0 coins

It's tied to the state average weekly wage, so it goes up automatically each year based on economic data.

0 coins

Is there a waiting period before you start getting paid? I keep hearing different things.

0 coins

There's a one week waiting period in Washington. So your first payable week, you won't get paid for, but after that you should get weekly benefits if you're eligible.

0 coins

Ugh, so even when approved you have to wait an extra week to see any money?

0 coins

Yeah, it's built into the system. Just plan for that extra week without income.

0 coins

I've been on unemployment for 8 weeks now and still haven't figured out exactly how they calculated my amount. The whole system is needlessly complicated.

0 coins

Try calling Washington ESD and asking them to explain it. If you can't get through normally, that Claimyr thing people mentioned might help you actually reach someone.

For anyone wondering about taxes - Washington doesn't have state income tax but you'll still owe federal taxes on unemployment benefits. You can have them withhold 10% or pay quarterly.

0 coins

Good point, I definitely want to have them withhold taxes so I don't get hit with a big bill next year.

0 coins

Yeah I learned that the hard way. Owed like $3000 because I didn't have anything withheld.

0 coins

The benefit amount is one thing but actually getting approved and getting your first payment is a whole other nightmare. My claim has been in adjudication for 6 weeks.

0 coins

Adjudication delays are brutal right now. Have you tried contacting them about the status?

0 coins

I've tried everything. Can't get through on the phone, online messages get generic responses. Starting to think I need to hire someone to call for me.

0 coins

Actually that Claimyr service might be exactly what you need. They specialize in getting through to Washington ESD for adjudication issues and claim status problems.
