How many days do you have to work to get unemployment benefits in Washington ESD?
I'm trying to figure out if I qualify for unemployment benefits through Washington ESD. I've been working part-time for about 8 months but I'm not sure if that's enough to meet the work requirements. Does anyone know exactly how many days you need to work to be eligible? I keep seeing different information online about base periods and qualifying wages but it's all confusing. My job ended last week and I really need to know if I should even bother applying.

It's not actually about days worked - Washington ESD looks at your earnings during what they call the 'base period.' You need to have earned at least $1,872 in wages during your base period, which is usually the first 4 of the last 5 completed calendar quarters before you file your claim. You also need wages in at least 2 quarters of your base period.

•So it's about how much money I made, not how many days I worked? That makes more sense. I think I might actually qualify then since I was making decent money even part-time.

•Exactly! I made this same mistake when I first applied. The days don't matter as much as hitting those wage thresholds.

You also need to make sure you lost your job through no fault of your own. If you quit without good cause or got fired for misconduct, you won't qualify regardless of how much you earned. The work requirements are just one part of the eligibility puzzle.

•My position was eliminated due to budget cuts, so I think I'm okay on that front. Just worried about the wage requirements now.

I had a similar situation last year and spent weeks trying to get through to Washington ESD to ask about my eligibility. The phone lines are impossible! I finally found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get connected to an actual agent who could review my work history and confirm I qualified. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me so much time and stress.

•Never heard of that before. Did they charge you a lot for it?

•It was worth it to finally get real answers instead of guessing. The peace of mind alone was huge.

•Might have to look into that if I can't figure this out on my own. These phone systems are brutal.

UGH the whole system is so confusing!! I worked for 6 months and made like $15,000 and they still denied me because apparently I didn't work in enough quarters or something?? Makes no sense when I clearly worked and paid taxes.

•That's frustrating but it sounds like you might have had all your wages in just one or two quarters. You need wages in at least 2 quarters of your base period to qualify.

•Yeah I think that's what happened. I started my job in July and got laid off in December so maybe it was all in just 2 quarters. So stupid.

There's also an alternative base period calculation they can use if you don't qualify under the regular base period. It uses the 4 most recent completed quarters instead of the first 4 of the last 5. Sometimes that helps people who worked more recently.

•Oh that's interesting! How do you request them to use the alternative base period?

•I think they automatically check it if you don't qualify under the regular base period, but you can mention it when you file your claim or call to ask.

Just apply and see what happens. The worst they can say is no, right? I thought I wouldn't qualify but ended up getting approved. The online application walks you through everything and they'll tell you if you meet the requirements.

•True, I guess there's no harm in trying. I'm just worried about wasting time if I clearly don't qualify.

•The application doesn't take that long honestly. Maybe 30 minutes max if you have all your employer info ready.

I've been working construction on and off for years and this comes up a lot. The key thing is that $1,872 minimum and having wages in multiple quarters. Some guys work really hard for 3 months then take time off and wonder why they don't qualify. You need that spread across quarters.

•Construction is tough for this stuff because of the seasonal nature. I've seen guys get denied because all their work was in one quarter.

•Exactly. That's why I try to pick up some work in different quarters even if it's just a few days here and there.

Does anyone know if gig work counts toward the wage requirements? I did some DoorDash and Uber driving along with my regular job.

•Gig work usually doesn't count because you're considered an independent contractor, not an employee. But if you got a 1099 and paid self-employment taxes, there might be some scenarios where it could help.

•Darn, I was hoping that would help boost my qualifying wages. Thanks for the info though.

I'm in a similar boat - worked part time for about 10 months but not sure about the quarters thing. When I called Washington ESD they said I could check my wages online but I can't figure out how to access that information. Anyone know how to see your wage history?

•You can create an account on the Washington ESD website and there should be a section where you can view your wage and employment history. It's under the 'View and Maintain Account Information' section I think.

•Thanks! I'll try to find that. The website is not very user-friendly but I'll dig around.

Word of advice - if you do qualify and file a claim, make sure you understand the weekly claim requirements. I got approved but then got in trouble because I didn't realize I had to file every week even if I didn't get paid that week. Almost lost my benefits over that.

•Good to know! I'll make sure to read all the requirements carefully if I get approved.

•Yeah the weekly claims are super important. I missed one week and it was a pain to get it sorted out.

Another thing to keep in mind is that Washington ESD will look at your highest earning quarter in your base period to determine your weekly benefit amount. So even if you barely qualify, you might not get much money each week if your wages were low.

•Makes sense. I'm just hoping to get something to help with bills while I look for another job.

•Even a small amount helps. I got like $180 a week which wasn't much but it covered my phone bill and some groceries.

I tried using that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier and it actually worked great. Got through to an agent in like 10 minutes instead of spending hours on hold. They were able to look up my wage history and confirm I qualified before I even submitted my application. Definitely recommend it if you're having trouble getting through.

•That's exactly what I need - someone who can actually look at my specific situation and tell me if I qualify. The generic information online is helpful but I want to know about MY case.

•A friend told me about it after she used them. Check out their demo video if you want to see how it works before trying it.

The quarter system is so confusing. I wish they would just say 'you need to work X number of weeks' or something simple like that. Having to calculate base periods and qualifying wages is unnecessarily complicated.

•I think it's designed to be confusing so fewer people apply. Same with all the other hoops you have to jump through.

•It's actually based on federal requirements, not something Washington ESD made up. But I agree it could be explained more clearly.

Don't forget you also have to be able and available for work to get benefits. So if you have any restrictions on when you can work or what jobs you can take, that might affect your eligibility too.

•I'm available full-time and looking actively, so I should be good there. It's really just the wage requirements I'm worried about.

Update: I just applied online and it was easier than I thought. They automatically calculated everything and told me I qualified! My first payment should come next week. Thanks everyone for the help and advice.

•That's great news! I think I'm going to go ahead and apply too. You've given me hope that I might actually qualify.

•Thanks! Now I just need to make sure I don't mess up the weekly claims. Already set a reminder on my phone to file every Sunday.
