How long you gotta work to get unemployment benefits in Washington state?
So I've been working at this warehouse job for about 4 months now and wondering if I'd qualify for unemployment if I got laid off. My buddy said you need to work a whole year but that doesn't sound right? I make about $18/hour and work full time. Anyone know the actual requirements for Washington ESD unemployment?

You don't need a full year. Washington state requires you to have earned wages in at least two quarters during your base period (which is usually the first four of the last five completed quarters). The minimum is earning at least $1,005 total during your base period, with at least $1,005 in your highest earning quarter.

•ok so like if I started in september and its january now, would september-december count as enough quarters?

Jessica Suarez
•Yes, if you worked full quarters in Sep-Oct-Nov-Dec that would be four quarters which definitely meets the requirement. You just need wages reported in at least two of those quarters.

I had the same question when I got furloughed last year. The wage requirements are actually pretty reasonable - it's not about how long you worked but how much you earned in total. At $18/hour full time you'd easily meet the minimum wage requirements after just a few months.

•thats good to know, thanks. did you have any trouble with your claim when you filed?

•Not really, the hard part was actually getting through to Washington ESD on the phone when I had questions about my claim status.

Just a heads up - I spent weeks trying to call Washington ESD about my wage base period question and could never get through. Finally used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me reach an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me so much frustration trying to get answers about my eligibility.

•How much does that cost though? Seems like something that should be free to get basic info about your own claim.

•It's worth it when you're stuck in limbo not knowing if you qualify or when your benefits will start. The peace of mind was huge for me.

wait so is it two quarters OR four quarters? im confused now

Jessica Suarez
•You need wages in at least TWO quarters during your base period. The base period is the first four of the last five completed quarters, so that's the timeframe they look at.

•ok got it, thanks for clarifying

THE SYSTEM IS BROKEN!!! I worked for 8 months and they STILL denied my claim because apparently my employer wasn't reporting my wages correctly. Took me 3 months to sort it out and get my benefits. Washington ESD is a nightmare to deal with.

•oh no that sounds terrible. how did you end up fixing it?

Justin Chang
•Had to get my employer to resubmit wage reports and file an appeal. Total mess but eventually got it sorted.

I think there's also different rules if you're seasonal or part-time? My sister worked retail and had issues because her hours were all over the place.

•The wage requirements are the same regardless - it's based on total earnings, not hours worked. Part-time workers can definitely qualify if they meet the wage thresholds.

•good to know, I'll tell her that

Another thing to keep in mind is that you have to be unemployed through no fault of your own. If you quit without good cause or get fired for misconduct, you won't qualify regardless of how long you worked.

•yeah I figured that much. just trying to understand the work requirements in case something happens

•Smart to know ahead of time. Most people don't think about it until they need it.

Does anyone know if you can collect unemployment between seasonal jobs? Like if you work retail during holidays then get laid off in January?
0 coins
Jessica Suarez
•Yes, seasonal workers can collect unemployment benefits during the off-season as long as they meet the wage requirements and are available for work.

•That's helpful, thanks!

For anyone who ends up needing to contact Washington ESD about eligibility questions, seriously consider using Claimyr. I wasted so much time on hold and getting disconnected before I found them. Made the whole process so much easier.

•I've seen you mention this a couple times now - do you work for them or something?

Lily Young
•No, just someone who was really frustrated with the phone system and found something that actually worked. I get why people are skeptical though.

so the original poster should be fine with 4 months of full time work at $18/hour right?
0 coins
Jessica Suarez
•Absolutely. At $18/hour full time for 4 months, they'd be well above the minimum wage requirements.

One more thing - make sure your employer is actually reporting your wages to Washington ESD. I had a friend who worked under the table and couldn't get benefits because there was no record of his employment.

•yeah this is a legit job with taxes taken out and everything so should be good

The wage requirements in Washington are actually pretty reasonable compared to some other states. The hardest part is usually dealing with the bureaucracy and getting answers when you have questions.

Justin Chang
•EXACTLY! The requirements aren't the problem, it's the horrible customer service and phone system.

Marcus Williams
•Yeah, that's why services like Claimyr exist. The demand is there because the system is so hard to navigate.

Just want to add that if you do end up filing a claim, make sure you file your weekly claims on time every week. Even if your claim is still being processed, you need to keep filing to avoid missing out on benefits.

Jay Lincoln
•good tip, I'll remember that if I ever need to file

Hunter Brighton
•Yeah, a lot of people don't realize you have to keep filing even when things are pending

One last plug for Claimyr - if anyone ends up needing to talk to Washington ESD about wage base periods or eligibility, check out their demo video. It really shows how much easier it makes getting through to an actual person who can answer your specific questions.

This thread should be pinned or something - such good basic info about work requirements that everyone should know.

At least Washington's requirements are straightforward. Some states have crazy complicated formulas that make no sense.

•True, the two-quarter rule with minimum wage thresholds is pretty clear once you understand it.

•Yeah, if only their phone system was as clear as their rules!
