How long to approve unemployment claim - Washington ESD timeline?
Filed my initial claim with Washington ESD about 10 days ago and still showing 'pending' status. My employer laid me off due to budget cuts so I should qualify. How long does it usually take for them to approve a straightforward unemployment claim? Getting nervous about bills coming up and need to know what timeline I'm looking at.

Typical processing time is 2-3 weeks for initial claims if there are no issues. Since you were laid off (not fired for cause), that should help speed things up. Make sure you're filing your weekly claims even while it's pending - you can get backpay once approved.

•Thanks! I have been doing the weekly claims. Should I be worried that it's been 10 days already?

•Not at all - 10 days is still normal. The 2-3 week timeline starts from when they receive all your documentation.

mine took exactly 3 weeks and that was with no complications. they have to verify employment history with your employer which takes time

•Did Washington ESD contact your employer directly or did you have to provide something?

•they contacted my employer directly, no action needed from me

If you're getting anxious about the wait, I discovered this service called Claimyr that helps people get through to Washington ESD phone agents faster. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Really helped me when I needed to check on my claim status.

•Interesting, have you actually used it? The Washington ESD phone lines are impossible to get through to.

•Yeah I used it last month when my claim got stuck. Way better than spending hours on hold or getting hung up on.

•How much does something like that cost? Seems too good to be true.

•It's worth it compared to the stress of not knowing what's happening with your claim. Much easier than the alternative.

The waiting is the worst part!! I was checking my account like 10 times a day when I filed. Try to distract yourself because there's nothing you can do to speed it up.

•Exactly what I'm doing - checking constantly. Good to know I'm not the only one who gets obsessive about it.

•Totally normal! The uncertainty makes it so much worse than it needs to be.

Washington ESD is SO SLOW compared to other states. My friend in Oregon got approved in like 5 days. Here it's always weeks and weeks with no communication.

•Every state has different processing times and staffing levels. Washington has improved a lot since the pandemic backlog issues.

•Maybe but it still feels like forever when you're waiting for your first payment

•at least we get backpay once approved, some states don't do that

Keep filing those weekly claims! That's the most important thing. I made the mistake of not filing the first week because I thought I had to wait for approval.

•Good reminder - I've been filing them but wasn't sure if I should. Thanks for confirming.

•Yeah you can't go back and claim those weeks later if you miss them. Always file even if pending.

Also make sure your job search requirements are up to date. Washington requires 3 job search activities per week once you're approved, and they may ask for your log during the approval process.

•I've been applying to jobs but haven't been keeping a formal log. Should I start that now?

Amara Chukwu
•Absolutely start now. Use WorkSourceWA to track applications - it integrates with your Washington ESD account.

•Wait do they actually check the job search log? I thought that was just if you get audited

•They can request it at any time, so better to stay compliant from the start.

I'm in week 4 of waiting and still nothing. Starting to think something went wrong with my application.

•4 weeks is getting into the territory where you should call. There might be an issue that needs to be resolved.

•This is exactly when Claimyr helped me. Couldn't get through on my own but they got me connected to an agent who found the issue.

•What kind of issues cause delays like that?

•Could be anything - employer dispute, identity verification needed, or just your claim got flagged for manual review.

Does anyone know if there's a way to check what stage your claim is in? Mine just says 'claim under review' with no details.

•The online portal doesn't give much detail unfortunately. Calling is really the only way to get specifics.

•Ugh the phone system is such a nightmare though. Might try that Claimyr thing someone mentioned.

Mine took 2.5 weeks and then got approved on a Friday. First payment showed up the following Tuesday. Hang in there!

•That's encouraging! How much was your weekly benefit amount if you don't mind me asking?

•I'd rather not share the exact amount but it was based on my highest quarter earnings from the past year.

Just remember they're processing thousands of claims. Your 10 days is nothing compared to some people who wait months during busy periods.

•True, I guess I need to be more patient. Just stressful not knowing.

•The not knowing is definitely the hardest part of the whole process.

Make sure you have direct deposit set up! Paper checks take forever to arrive once you're approved.

Liam O'Sullivan
•Good point - I did set that up when I filed. Thanks for the reminder.

I work in HR and we usually see the employment verification requests from Washington ESD within the first week of someone filing. That's typically the longest part of the process.

Liam O'Sullivan
•Interesting perspective! Do employers usually respond quickly to those requests?
0 coins
QuantumQuest
•Most responsible employers respond within a few business days. Some smaller companies take longer which can delay approval.

•What happens if an employer doesn't respond at all?

•Washington ESD will eventually approve based on the information they have, but it takes longer.

The anticipation is killing me too! At least we're all in this together. Update us when you hear something!

I had a friend who used that Claimyr service when Washington ESD wasn't responding to his messages about a delay. Turned out there was just a simple verification issue that got resolved immediately once he talked to an agent.

•Yeah, sometimes there are easy fixes that you'd never know about without talking to someone directly.
