How long to apply for unemployment after being fired in WA - missed deadline?
Got terminated from my warehouse job 6 weeks ago and just now thinking about filing for unemployment benefits. I've been looking for work but no luck yet and bills are piling up. Is there a deadline for applying with Washington ESD after you get fired? Did I wait too long? I heard something about backdating claims but not sure how that works.

You can still file! Washington ESD allows you to backdate your claim up to one year from when you became unemployed. However, you'll only get benefits for the weeks you actually file for, and there might be a waiting period. File online at esd.wa.gov as soon as possible.

•Thanks! So I won't lose all those weeks I waited?

•You can request backdating during the application process, but you'll need to explain why you didn't file sooner. Valid reasons include illness, lack of internet access, or not knowing you were eligible.

dude same thing happened to me last year, waited like 2 months before applying because I thought I'd find something quick. Washington ESD let me backdate but only approved about half the weeks I requested.

•What reason did you give for the delay? I just didn't know I could apply so soon after being fired.

•told them I was focused on job searching and didn't realize I qualified. they accepted it but said next time file within first week

The sooner you file the better. I've helped people with Washington ESD claims and backdating can be tricky - they're pretty strict about the reasons they'll accept. Being busy job hunting isn't always considered a valid excuse for delay. But definitely try since you have nothing to lose at this point.

•What if you were fired for cause? Does that affect when you can apply?

•You can apply regardless of why you were terminated. Washington ESD will investigate during adjudication to determine if you're eligible. Being fired doesn't automatically disqualify you unless it was for willful misconduct.

I was in a similar situation and had trouble getting through to Washington ESD to ask about backdating. Kept getting busy signals and dropped calls for weeks. Finally used Claimyr.com to get connected to an actual agent who walked me through the backdating process. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ. Made the whole thing so much easier than trying to call on my own.

•Never heard of that service. Is it legit?

•Yeah it's real, they just help you get through the phone queue. I was skeptical too but was desperate after weeks of trying to call myself.

•Claimyr saved my sanity too. Washington ESD phone system is completely overwhelmed.

The system is such a joke. They make it impossible to get help then penalize you for not knowing the rules. I waited 3 weeks to apply and they questioned every single week like I was trying to scam them.

•I understand the frustration, but the system has to verify eligibility. The good news is once you're approved, payments are usually quick.

•True, just wish they made the process clearer upfront about deadlines and stuff

Here's what you need to know about timing: You should file within the first week of unemployment, but Washington ESD will consider backdating requests up to 52 weeks. For your application, be honest about why you delayed and emphasize that you were actively job searching. Include any documentation of your job search efforts if you kept records.

•I have some emails from employers I contacted. Would that help?

•Absolutely! Print those out or save PDFs. Any proof of job search activity during those 6 weeks will support your case for backdating.

•What about informal applications, like walking into places? How do you prove that?

•Keep a detailed log with dates, company names, and contact methods. Washington ESD accepts self-reported job search activities as long as they're specific and verifiable.

Wait I'm confused - I thought you had to apply immediately or you lose eligibility completely? My friend told me there was like a 30 day deadline.

•That's a common misconception. There's no hard deadline to apply, but the longer you wait, the harder it becomes to justify backdating your claim.

•Oh okay that makes me feel better. I got laid off last week and was panicking about missing some deadline.

Pro tip: when you file online, there's a section asking why you're requesting backdating. Be specific and honest. 'I was focused on finding new employment and unaware I could file immediately' is better than just 'I didn't know.

•Good advice! Should I mention that I was using savings first and didn't think I needed benefits right away?

•Yes, that shows you weren't trying to abuse the system, just that you genuinely didn't understand the process.

also make sure you have all your employment info ready - dates, wages, reason for separation. the online application is pretty long and times out if you take too long

Don't beat yourself up about waiting 6 weeks. A lot of people don't realize unemployment is available immediately after job loss. The important thing is you're filing now. Just be prepared that your first payment might take 3-4 weeks while they process everything.

•3-4 weeks?? I need money now though.

•I know it's tough. Look into local food banks and assistance programs while you wait. United Way 211 can help you find resources in your area.

Check if your termination qualifies you for immediate benefits or if there's a waiting week. Some types of job loss have different processing times. Also make sure to start your weekly claims right away even while the initial claim is being processed.

•What's a waiting week? I keep seeing that term but don't understand it.

•It's the first week of your claim that you don't get paid for, even if you're eligible. Think of it as a deductible. Not all states have it but Washington does for most claims.

Quick update on the Claimyr thing I mentioned earlier - they also helped me understand the backdating requirements before I submitted my claim. Saved me from making mistakes that could have delayed approval even more. Worth checking out if you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD directly.

•How much does something like that cost? I'm already broke from being unemployed.

•They focus on the value of getting your claim processed correctly rather than the cost. Check their site for current info. For me it was worth it to avoid weeks more delay.

The Washington ESD website has a backdating request form you can submit along with your initial application. Don't wait - file today and request backdating for all 6 weeks. Worst case they deny some weeks, best case you get benefits for the full period.

•Thanks everyone! Going to file right now. Wish me luck!

•Good luck! Remember to file your weekly claims every week going forward, even while waiting for the initial determination.

One more thing - if you worked for a large company, they might have already reported your termination to Washington ESD. That could actually help your case for backdating since it shows the separation date was legitimate.

•It was a pretty big warehouse chain, so hopefully that helps.

•Definitely. Large employers usually have automated reporting to state unemployment agencies.

Just want to add that even if they only approve partial backdating, it's better than nothing. I got 4 out of 7 weeks approved when I waited too long to file. Still helped with bills while I kept looking for work.

•Same here - got 3 out of 5 weeks backdated. Not perfect but definitely helped.
