How long must you work for a company to get Washington ESD unemployment benefits?

I just got laid off from my job at a tech startup where I worked for about 8 months. Before that I was unemployed for 6 months after moving to Seattle. I'm trying to figure out if I qualify for unemployment benefits through Washington ESD. Does anyone know what the minimum work requirements are? I'm worried 8 months might not be enough time to qualify for UI benefits.

In Washington, you need to have worked in at least two quarters during your base period and earned a minimum amount. The base period is usually the first four of the last 5 completed quarters before you file. So it's not about how long you worked for one company, but your total earnings over that time period.

Thanks! So even though I only worked 8 months at this company, my previous job history could count too?

0 coins

Exactly! All your covered employment in the base period counts, not just your most recent job.

You also need to have earned at least $3,395 in your base period total, with at least $1,130 earned outside your highest quarter. Washington ESD has specific wage requirements beyond just working.

Those numbers sound right for 2025. I had to meet those same requirements when I filed last year.

0 coins

Good to know about the wage requirements. I think I should meet those since I was making decent money at the startup.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to verify your eligibility, I had success using claimyr.com. It's a service that helps you get connected to ESD agents when the phone lines are swamped. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

Interesting, I've been trying to call ESD for days but keep getting busy signals. How does that service work?

0 coins

It basically calls ESD repeatedly until it gets through, then connects you. Saved me hours of redial frustration when I needed to check my claim status.

0 coins

wait i thought you had to work a full year to get unemployment?? this is confusing

0 coins

That's a common misconception. It's based on your earnings over 4 quarters, not necessarily a full year of continuous employment.

0 coins

Yeah I made the same mistake when I first looked into this. The quarters thing is weird but makes sense once you understand it.

You should be fine with 8 months at a decent paying job, especially if you had any other work in the base period. The key is meeting those minimum wage thresholds. When you file your claim, Washington ESD will automatically calculate your base period wages and let you know if you qualify.

0 coins

That's reassuring. I'll go ahead and file the claim online then. Better to find out for sure than keep worrying about it.

0 coins

Exactly. The worst they can say is no, but based on what you described you should qualify. Make sure to file as soon as possible since there's a waiting week.

I worked 3 jobs last year for short periods and still qualified. It really is about total earnings, not length at one company.

0 coins

Good to know! I feel much better about my situation now.

0 coins

Same here, gig work and short term contracts can still add up to qualifying wages.

0 coins

The whole system is so confusing though. Why can't they just make it simple like 'worked 6 months = qualify'?

0 coins

The wage-based system is actually more fair because it accounts for different income levels and work patterns. Someone who worked part-time for a year might not have enough wages to qualify, while someone who worked full-time for 6 months might.

0 coins

I guess that makes sense when you put it that way.

0 coins

Don't forget you also have to be able and available for work and actively seeking employment. Meeting the wage requirements is just the first step.

0 coins

Right, I've heard about the job search requirements. How many jobs do you have to apply to each week?

0 coins

It varies but generally 3 job search activities per week. Can be applications, networking, interviews, etc.

0 coins

If you're unsure about your base period wages, you can request a wage transcript from Washington ESD. It shows all your reported earnings by quarter.

0 coins

How do I request that? Through the SecureAccess Washington site?

0 coins

Yes, you can request it online or by calling ESD. Though calling might be tough with their current call volumes.

0 coins

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS A JOKE! I worked for 10 months and got denied because of some technicality about when my quarters ended. Make sure you understand the base period calculation before you get your hopes up.

0 coins

That's frustrating but there might have been other factors. The standard base period is pretty straightforward - first 4 of the last 5 completed quarters.

0 coins

Did you try filing an appeal? Sometimes initial determinations get overturned.

0 coins

I used claimyr when I needed to talk to someone about my eligibility determination. Much better than sitting on hold for hours. Worth checking out if you run into issues.

0 coins

Thanks for the recommendation. I'll keep that in mind if I need to speak to someone at ESD.

0 coins

How much does claimyr cost? Is it worth it?

0 coins

I thought it was worth it to avoid the phone frustration, but you can try calling ESD directly first to see if you get through.

0 coins

just file the claim and see what happens. worrying about it won't change anything

0 coins

You're right, I'm probably overthinking this. Going to file today.

0 coins

Make sure to file your weekly claims on time even if your initial claim is still processing. Missing a week can cause delays in your benefits.

0 coins

Good tip! I didn't realize you had to keep filing weekly claims during processing.

0 coins

Yeah, you need to file every week to maintain your claim even if you're not getting paid yet.

0 coins

Update us on how it goes! I'm in a similar situation and curious about the outcome.

0 coins

Will do! I'm feeling much more confident about applying now thanks to everyone's help.

0 coins

The 8 months at good pay should definitely qualify you. I've seen people qualify with much less continuous employment.

0 coins

That's really encouraging to hear. I appreciate everyone taking the time to explain this stuff.

0 coins

Washington's unemployment system isn't perfect but the wage-based qualification system is actually pretty reasonable once you understand it.

0 coins

Agreed. It's more flexible than a simple time-based requirement would be.

0 coins

One more thing - if you don't qualify under the standard base period, there's also an alternate base period they can check. So don't give up if the first calculation doesn't work out.

0 coins

Good to know there's a backup option! This forum has been incredibly helpful.

0 coins

The alternate base period uses the most recent 4 quarters instead of the standard calculation. Can help people who recently started working.

0 coins

Remember that if you used claimyr or any callback service, they're just helping you get through to the regular ESD staff. The determination still comes from Washington ESD directly.

0 coins

Right, it's just a tool to help with the phone connection issues. The actual eligibility rules are the same either way.

0 coins

Good luck with your claim! Sounds like you should be fine based on what you've described.

0 coins

Thank you! I really appreciate all the helpful information from everyone here.

0 coins

Keep your pay stubs and employment records handy in case ESD needs additional documentation during the application process.

0 coins

Will do! I've got all my records organized and ready to go.
