How long for ESD standby payment processing after approval?

I just got my standby status approved by ESD yesterday (healthcare worker, reduced hours due to department restructuring). My employer confirmed they still need me but can't give me regular hours for 6-8 weeks. I've already filed my first weekly claim while on standby, but I'm wondering how long it typically takes for the money to actually hit my account once standby is approved? Is it the same timeframe as regular unemployment or is there additional processing time? My rent is due on the 7th and I'm trying to figure out if I need to dip into savings or if the payment will arrive in time. Thanks for any info!

In my experience, standby payments follow the same timeline as regular unemployment benefits. Once your standby status is approved, there's no additional delay for those payments. The first payment usually takes 2-3 business days after filing your weekly claim if you have direct deposit set up. If you're receiving benefits via the ESD debit card, it might take an extra 1-2 days for the funds to appear. Since you mentioned you just got approved yesterday and have already filed your weekly claim, you should see your payment by the end of this week, assuming there aren't any adjudication issues with your claim.

That's a huge relief! I do have direct deposit set up. I was worried there might be some additional review period specifically for standby claims. Thanks for the info!

i got standby 2 months ago when our company had that fire, payment came in like normal UI just make sure u answer the job search questions correctly - u still have to say YES that ur able and available but NO to the job search activities since standby means u dont need to do the 3 job search things

Oh wait - now I'm confused. I think I might have answered the weekly claim questions wrong then. I said YES to being able and available but I also said YES to completing job search activities (even though I'm on standby) because I was afraid of being denied. Should I call ESD to fix this?

If you answered the job search question wrong on your weekly claim, your payment could be delayed while they sort it out. When you're on approved standby, you're supposed to answer NO to conducting job search activities and then select the standby exemption reason. ESD's system might flag this inconsistency and put your payment on hold. You should definitely call ESD to explain the situation. They can update your weekly claim with the correct information before it causes problems. The sooner you reach them, the better chance of your payment not being delayed.

Good luck getting through to them! I spent 5 days trying to reach someone at ESD about my standby approval last month. The phone system is a complete nightmare - either busy signals or disconnects after waiting for an hour. So frustrating!!

I had a similar situation last month when my employer put me on standby for 4 weeks. After my standby was approved, I got my first payment exactly 3 business days after filing my weekly claim (with direct deposit). The second and third payments came like clockwork - always 2-3 days after filing. BUT - I made the same mistake you did on one of my weekly claims! I accidentally said I did job search activities even though I was on standby. My payment got held up for almost 2 weeks while they figured it out. I finally got through to someone at ESD by using Claimyr (claimyr.com). It's a service that helps you skip the ESD phone queue. Costs a bit but totally worth it when you're desperately trying to fix something. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 The ESD agent was able to correct my weekly claim over the phone and release my payment the next day. So don't wait - try to get it fixed ASAP!

Thank you! I just checked my ESD account and it's showing my payment is pending with an issue. I'll check out that service because I really need to get this fixed before rent is due.

For everyone's reference, here's exactly how standby works with weekly claims: 1. You MUST answer YES to being able and available for work 2. You MUST answer NO to completing job search activities 3. You MUST select "Standby approved by ESD" as your reason 4. You still report any earnings during the week as usual If you made a mistake, contact ESD immediately. Standby payments process at the same speed as regular UI benefits (2-3 days for direct deposit) IF everything is answered correctly. If there are inconsistencies, your payment will be held until resolved. Also, standby status has strict time limits - maximum of 8 weeks in a 12-month period for most industries (with some exceptions for construction, etc.). Make sure you understand when your standby period ends!

YES TO ALL THIS!!! I learned all of this the hard way when my manufacturing plant shut down for retooling last year. The ESD website is SO CONFUSING about standby! They never clearly explain the weekly claim process for standby anywhere obvious. Cost me 3 weeks of stress and no benefits before I figured it out.

Update: I was able to contact ESD using that Claimyr service, and they were super helpful! The agent confirmed I answered the job search question incorrectly. She fixed my weekly claim right away and said my payment should process within 24-48 hours. She also explained exactly how to answer the questions for my next weekly claim while on standby. What a relief! Thanks everyone for your help.

Great to hear you got it resolved! For your future reference (and anyone else reading this thread), standby status is definitely one of the more confusing aspects of unemployment because the weekly claim questions aren't tailored specifically to standby claimants. This inconsistency trips up a lot of people. Glad you'll be getting your payment before rent is due!

This is such valuable information for anyone dealing with standby claims! I'm currently in a similar situation where my restaurant is temporarily closing for renovations and I'm waiting for my standby approval to come through. Reading about the weekly claim pitfalls is really helpful - I'll make sure to answer NO to job search activities once I'm approved. It's ridiculous that ESD doesn't make this clearer on their website. You'd think they'd have a specific standby section explaining exactly how to fill out the weekly claims. Thanks for sharing your experience and glad you got it sorted out in time for rent!
