ESD standby extension requested by employer - how long until approval?

Hey all, I'm stressing about my standby status with ESD and could use some advice. I'm currently on a 4-week standby that expires TODAY, and my employer submitted a request for the 4-week extension last week. Problem is, I haven't heard anything back from unemployment about approval. I'm in a union position which normally waives the job search requirement, but here's the catch - if I'm not officially on standby, I'm required to be on the union's out-of-work list to stay compliant with ESD requirements. Anyone know how long these standby extension approvals typically take? Should I just wait it out for ESD to respond, or should I get on the out-of-work list immediately to avoid any potential issues with my claim? I'm planning to call tomorrow if I don't hear anything, but figured someone here might have gone through this before.

i had this happen last month. took about 5 business days for the standby extension to show up in my eservices account. just keep checking online, you'll probably see it update soon

Thanks for the info! Did you continue claiming as normal during those 5 days while waiting for the approval to show up?

When my employer requested an extension for me in January, ESD took nearly 10 days to approve it. The important thing is that your employer submitted the request before your current standby period expired, which they did. I recommend continuing to file your weekly claims as normal and answering the standby question as "yes" since your employer has requested the extension. If you want to be extra careful, you could also register on the out-of-work list temporarily until the extension shows up in your account. Better safe than sorry with ESD. Just make sure to document everything, including when your employer submitted the extension request.

This is actually wrong advice. If your standby expired you CANNOT answer "yes" to the standby question until the new one is approved!!! You'll get an overpayment. You need to say "no" and then list your union as waiving job search OR do job search activities until the new standby is approved.

I went through this twice last year!!!! It's so stressful. Mine took 8 days the first time and 6 days the second time. The WORST part is they don't notify you when it's approved - you just have to keep checking your account obsessively. I swear ESD does this on purpose to drive us all insane LOL

Union standby extensions can be particularly tricky because of the special rules that apply. Here's what you should know: 1. Once your current standby expires, you should immediately register on your union's out-of-work list to maintain compliance until the extension is approved. 2. When filing your weekly claim, you'll need to answer "no" to the standby question once your current period expires, BUT you can still indicate that your job search is waived due to union membership. 3. ESD typically processes these requests within 3-10 business days, but with current staffing levels, it can sometimes take up to two weeks. 4. The approval will be retroactive to when your previous standby period ended, so you won't lose any benefits as long as you keep filing correctly. 5. Document the date your employer submitted the request - this will be important if there are any issues.

This is super helpful, thank you! I've been worried about messing up my claim by answering something wrong. I'll go ahead and register on the out-of-work list tomorrow just to be safe, and keep an eye on my account for the approval.

I've been through this nightmare too many times. The real problem is GETTING THROUGH to ESD if there's any issue with your standby. Last time my extension was denied for some mystery reason and I spent 3 WEEKS trying to get someone on the phone! Finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through - they have this system that holds your place in line and calls you when an agent is available. Saved me from losing my mind and my benefits. They have a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 Hopefully your extension goes through without issues, but if you need to talk to someone at ESD, don't waste days getting hung up on like I did.

Is that service legit? Seems weird to pay someone just to get through to ESD when it's a free government service we already pay taxes for... 🤔

UPDATE: Just wanted to let everyone know that my standby extension was finally approved! It took 7 business days total. For anyone else in this situation - I ended up registering on the out-of-work list as a precaution but kept checking my account daily. The approval showed up without any notification email, so definitely keep checking your account regularly. Thanks for all the advice!
