How long does ESD standby status approval typically take? First time application

Lost my job at the furniture warehouse last week (company downsizing) and filed for unemployment through ESD. My manager said I could request 'standby' since they might call me back within 8 weeks if their new contract comes through. I submitted all the paperwork for regular unemployment and checked the standby box on my application 5 days ago, but haven't heard anything back yet. My ESD account just shows 'pending' with no other details. This is my first time applying for benefits and I'm getting really nervous about bills piling up. Anyone know how long standby approvals usually take with ESD? Do they process standby requests faster than regular claims or is it all the same timeline? Thanks for any insight!

Standby status typically takes 1-2 weeks to be approved after your initial claim is processed. ESD has to verify with your employer that you're eligible for standby (that they actually plan to recall you within the 8-week period). Your claim first needs to be approved generally, and then the standby status gets determined separately. Keep filing your weekly claims while you wait though - very important! You'll still need to be available for work even while on standby.

Thanks! Do I still need to do the job search activities while waiting for standby approval? The ESD website is confusing about this.

mine took 3 weeks. so annoying. kept getting different info from every person i talked to when i called.

Ugh, 3 weeks is so long! Were you able to actually reach someone on the phone? I've been trying but can't get through at all.

The standby approval process is separate from your regular UI claim approval. You need to continue doing your 3 job search activities each week UNTIL your standby status is officially approved. Make sure you're logging into your eServices account daily to check for updates or additional information requests. In my experience helping clients with ESD claims in 2025, standby approvals are taking about 10-14 business days on average, but it can be longer if there are any issues with your claim or if ESD has trouble reaching your employer to verify your potential recall date. If your standby is approved, you'll see it clearly indicated in your eServices account, and you'll receive a notice explaining that you're exempt from job search requirements during the standby period (currently max of 8 weeks).

But what if the employer never responds to ESD? My former boss is terrible about paperwork and ignores everything. Will my standby automatically be denied???

I applied for standby back in February and it was a TOTAL NIGHTMARE!!!! They denied me after 3 weeks saying my employer didn't respond, but my manager swore she sent everything they asked for. Had to file an appeal and then wait ANOTHER month before they fixed it. Meanwhile I was doing all those stupid job searches for nothing since I knew my job was coming back. The whole system is designed to make you give up!!!!

This isn't accurate information. Standby status doesn't require an appeal if denied - you would just continue with regular UI benefits and job search requirements. You can request a redetermination if there was an error, but that's different from an appeal. Let's not confuse the original poster with incorrect processes.

i got standby last month it took about 9 days i think? but my boss had to call them and talk to someone cuz they said they never got his paperwork the first time. your claim has to be approved first tho before they even look at the standby part.

That's really helpful to know. I'll check with my manager to make sure they respond to any ESD requests quickly. Hoping mine gets approved faster than some of these other timelines!

After working with ESD for years, I can tell you that standby processing times vary greatly depending on their current workload and staffing. Right now in 2025, they're averaging about 10-12 days for standby approvals after the initial claim is processed. Some important facts about standby status that many people don't know: 1. You must continue doing job searches until standby is officially approved 2. Your employer must verify intent to recall you within 8 weeks 3. The maximum standby period is 8 weeks (used to be longer pre-2023) 4. You can only receive one standby period per benefit year 5. Some industries have different standby rules (especially seasonal work) If you haven't heard anything after 2 weeks, you should definitely try to contact ESD directly for an update.

I've been on unemployment twice and the second time I got standby. The first regular claim took like 3 weeks but the standby one took almost 4 weeks! But that was during that weird system update they did in January. My neighbor just got approved for standby last week and she said it only took 8 days. I think it just depends on how busy they are and if Mercury is in retrograde lol

Thanks for sharing your experience! Seems like the timeline really varies. I'm hoping for a quick approval but preparing for the worst based on everyone's responses.

have u tried calling them? sometimes u can get someone to look at ur claim while ur on the phone

I've tried calling at least 15 times over the past few days. Either get a busy signal or the automated message saying call volume is too high and to try again later. So frustrating!

I had the same issue trying to reach ESD about my standby status last month. After wasting days trying to get through, I used Claimyr and got connected to an ESD agent in less than 20 minutes. They were able to look at my standby request while I was on the phone and tell me exactly what was happening with it. Saved me so much time and stress. You can see how it works at claimyr.com or watch their demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. It's seriously the only way I was able to get answers about my standby status.

Thanks for the suggestion! I hadn't heard of this service before. I'll definitely check it out because waiting with no information is driving me crazy.

just keep filing ur weekly claims no matter what!!! even while waiting for standby. thats the most important thing

Absolutely right! Missing even one weekly claim filing can cause major problems with your benefits. Always file your weekly claim during your designated filing time, even if your standby status is still pending or if your initial claim hasn't been approved yet.

Hey Ryan! I'm going through the exact same situation right now - filed for unemployment with standby status about a week ago after my restaurant job ended due to slow season. My manager said they'll likely call me back in 6-8 weeks when things pick up again. From what I've learned lurking in this community and talking to others, the timeline seems really inconsistent. Some people get approved in 8-10 days, others wait 3+ weeks. The key things I've gathered are: 1) keep filing your weekly claims no matter what, 2) continue doing the 3 job search activities until standby is officially approved, and 3) your employer needs to respond quickly to ESD's verification requests. I've been checking my eServices account obsessively every day hoping to see an update! The waiting and not knowing is definitely stressful when bills are due. Hang in there - sounds like most people do eventually get approved if their employer cooperates with the verification process.

Thanks for sharing your experience! It's reassuring to know someone else is going through the same thing right now. The restaurant industry layoffs are so common this time of year. I'm also checking my eServices account multiple times a day - probably too much! Good to know about continuing the job search activities until it's officially approved. I was wondering about that part. Hopefully we both hear back soon! Keep me posted on how yours goes.

I went through this exact same process about 6 months ago when my retail job ended due to store restructuring. My standby approval took exactly 12 days from the date I submitted my application. The key thing that helped speed up my process was staying in contact with my former manager to make sure they responded to ESD's verification request immediately when it came through. One tip I wish someone had told me: ESD sends the employer verification request via mail AND email, but some employers miss the email. I had my manager check their spam folder and that's where they found it! Once they responded within 24 hours, my standby status was approved just 2 days later. Also, definitely keep doing those weekly job searches until you see "STANDBY APPROVED" actually show up in your account. The system won't backtrack and excuse you from search requirements for weeks where you didn't complete them, even if your standby gets approved later. Learned that the hard way from a friend who had to deal with an overpayment issue. Hang in there - the waiting is the worst part but most furniture/warehouse jobs do follow through with recalls if they say they will!

This is super helpful advice! I never would have thought about the spam folder issue. I'm definitely going to reach out to my manager tomorrow to make sure they're watching for any communication from ESD. The tip about keeping up with job searches until seeing "STANDBY APPROVED" is really important too - I definitely don't want to deal with overpayment issues later. Thanks for sharing your experience with the 12-day timeline, that gives me a realistic expectation to work with.
